Vastly prefer this version; it feels brutally personal compared to the more abstract finished version. The line "Though you'd rather see me gone than to see there come the day, I'll be waiting for you anyway" kills me :(

I wish he would have kept"But it's alright cause some enchanted night i'll be with you"in the final version.
The aesthetic of a tortured soul has us all entranced to this very day I've said it before Elliott put everything he had into his music so we wouldn't have to feel alone
I'll fake it through the day With some help from Johnny Walker Red And the cold pain behind my eyes That shoots back through my head With two tickets torn in half and a lot nothing to do But it's alright cause some enchanted night I'll be with you Tarot cards and the lines in my hand Tell me I'm wrong But they're untrue I got plans for both of us that involve a trip out of town To a place I've seen in a magazine that you left lying around I can't hold my liquor but I keep a good attitude Cause it's alright some enchanted night I'll be with you And though you'd rather see me gone Than to see there come the day I'll be waiting for you anyway Next door the TV's flashing blue frames on the wall It's a comedy from the seventies with a lead no one recalls He vanished into oblivion It's easy to do And I cried a sea when you talked to me The day you said we were through But it's alright, some enchanted night I'll be with you
Funny I never thought these lyrics literally fit like an effin glove with what happened to me a few weeks ago lol... That thing was already a sick joke, the planned vacations, the tickets... sigh... I suddenly remembered this song lol
The first time I heard this part I thought he said "and I cried till sleep when you talked to me the day you said we were through". I think it made more sense to me then.
This version blows the other away! He changed “I can’t hold my liquor” line to suit the movie which is not what he intended when he wrote it. This is more real! Plus the recording is absolutely perfect
As someone who still lives in the same apartment after a long term break up, this is completely accurate. I had quit drinking for three years to better myself with my ex but I relapsed and went back after we broke up. I also listen to my geriatric neighbors television since he is hard at hearing, mostly old-timey movies but I get the feeling. Our anniversary is next week from now and I’m just pounding another drink to fall asleep.
Good luck. I managed to get out of this kind of shit, even if the process was painful and full of surprises (good and bad). Take it as a thrilling adventure. Best regards
this is the one i listen to all the time. the official version came on something the other day and threw me. the lyrics of this one... "i can't hold my liquor but i keep a good attitude"
I definitely love the version from Good Will Hunting, but this version feels much more natural. I am not sure if it is fair to compare them because on both Elliott Smith achieved greatness. But the lyricism on this one is much more his style. I love the recording as well. This song is special to me, along with Needle in the Hay and Southern Belle, my favorites from Smith. Every time I listen to them I get chills.
Why was it said that he wrote Miss Misery fOr tHe MoViE? Who was in charge of pushing that narrative? I know it wasn't Elliott's doing. I get that the lyrics were changed, but not completely. The feel of the song is very similar even with the updated lyrics, though I think this version is so much better. I don't know why they couldn't use this version, or atleast the same lyrics. I feel so much more connected with how this song feels. Love you, Elliott.
I thought about that a lot. I know that the am the Films director (Guss whatever his name) lied to the American picture Association in order to get the so g nominated. Apparently a song must be written for the movie in order to be considered for nomination. But why did Elliot change the lyrics? I think he thought that was unfinished. “It’s never good enough“ Is a common replaying theme in the musicians brain. Not that I can read his mind, only my own. Maybe he was taking advantage of the new interest in the song ...in the money that might come with it. More studio time and the chance to fix something that he thought could’ve been better? Personally I like this version … “I’ve got plans for both of us that involve a trip out of town… To place I’ve seen in a magazine that you left lying around” In this version he’s recalling a gesture....As opposed to in the new version it’s like he was admitting to her he was a piece of shit that wouldn’t go and do this thing that she wanted to do. This “trip out of town” is her idea, not his. To me that’s huge. Two tickets torn in half and a lot of nothing to do… Either way it’s lost

Ughhh i listened to the new version first sooo many times so now its hard for me to REALLY enjoy this version because all im thinking about is the other lyrics and how these lyrics are "wrong". GAHHHH!!!!!!!!
This shit is amazing in its agony. If you’ve never been this low then where have you been?
"I cant hold my liquor, but i keep a good attitude..." I miss you, Mr. Smith. Yours is a story of most beautiful tragedy.
Perfectly said.
honestly I like this version better
Jack Wattsitoyou I never heard the "other" version nor do I feel the need to.
Me too.
There is so much more emotions in this version, can't stop listening... :) Thanks Elliott, you made this world better place to live in.

That's even more cringy than the "will you miss me, miss misery" line. The word "enchanted" is pure cringe, quite frankly.
I wouldn't call in "cringy" but I do like the lyrics in the final version better.
I agree
Like keep the miss misery line but end on the enchanted night line

this is lyrically better than the other version
Except the first verse, poison rain down the drain to put bad thoughts in my head is just wow
Much prefer this version
Eh they're both kinda bad
Original all the way.

I had only heard the version from "Good Will Hunting" before finding this. Very different feelings. I think I find this one more relatable.
When i was first diagnosed with epilepsy this song got me through seizure aftermaths. Its beautiful

You can feel this song.
Both versions are good, but this one gain my heart.

Best version ..... 😘💞
This version is so much better to me ... it just feels so much more sorrowful and vulnerable
to me this song is more about a longing for peace and happiness than a girl
how perfect

Anyone know what year this was recorded? I'm thinking earliest 1996.
WinRARChickenDinRAR This was recorded at Jackpot Studios in a 1997 session.
definitely the better version.
this was so much more personal than the released version, you can tell in that he changed you to she in some lyrics.
Seriously who are the 21people who dislike this song?
I love this version mainly because it's so stripped down compared to the final version
This is so much better. Yes.
this versions way better. woulda been ever better if he never added overdubs
" It's not you're fault. It's not you're fault.
