Mike, you are way off the mark here. He is heralded in the industry by all of us touring songwriters who were influenced by Elliott, since Heatmiser before he even wen't solo. He is considered above Damien Rice, Jose Gonzalez, and even Bright Eyes Conor Oberst, to most. He is right there with the Kurt Cobain, Lennon, Bob Dylan levels, just his best work was pre the Grammy's and his hype. His best work is his first two solo records, raw, emotional, not over produced, and not with a label's push behind what songs made a record. He was on KRS they were tiny when he was signed from Heatmiser. Trust me, Elliott is basically the American counterpart of a Nick Drake to England. Both genius songwriters, and both were not mainstream. Niche sounds, so they will never be lumped in publicly with the likes of a Lennon or Dylan or Cobain. Those songwriters sold millions of records for years plural. Elliott stayed independent, until he could no longer and than he ultimately died too soon. We have his work, and legacy which will live on as long as recorded music is listened to. It's an honor to get compared to him on many reviews as I have along the way, Elliott is the cornerstone to all of this.

I wish I could just hug Elliott. The day of his death, something. His music makes me both happy and sad and I can't just enjoy it 100% because it was made when someone was suffering. You're a beautiful soul, Elliott. Heaven Adores You.
Well, take to heart that he was repeatedly reported as not being anything like the sad sack character that stars in many of his songs. He actually grew to be annoyed by the perception that he was a wet blanket in his everyday life. Not that he didn't struggle with depression or addiction. But it wasn't his whole identity. Just makes for the best songs. I couldn't get through an Elliott Smith cover of Good Vibrations, for instance. 😀 ...also the family cat just died. @@knuckle12356 prior to 2001, it was true that Elliott wasn't always miserable and depressed, but once he got hooked on heroin and crack, his life fell apart and by 2002 he really was just a shell of himself, according to several people close to him. In his biography, Torment Saint, by 2002 the compassion, vivacity, and concern he used to have for others had leaked out and his mind was just a soupy mess even after he quit the street drugs (he was still using and occasionally abusing prescription drugs until maybe two months before his death). He even told his friend Rob Schnapf just months before he died that because of all the prescription drugs he was on, it was hard for him to feel any emotions. When he was not completely emotionally numb, he was crying like a baby and wanting to die. I'd say the last almost-three years of life were a painful hell overall.

Does this count as an Elliot Smith song? Need a ruling here as it is technically a Heatmiser song but top notch and may be my favorite tune that he is associated with anyway. Glad it is included in this acoustic version on the New Moon collection. Beautiful!
Why does every prolific artist leave us? Can I have one person who truly kept me alive....well stay alive. But all the shit artist can live up to there 80s. Elliott thank you,you dont even know what you did for me. And all these other people.
It reminds me of 10 years ago, living in London, drunk every night. Kind of mixed feelings, I was very lonely and depressed, high as fuck all the time. It is weird in a way of I kind of miss it,though. It is not easy to explain.
that feeling of missing it is because it was a lot easier to avoid discomforts in your life living in numbing alterted states all the time i went through itand sometimes i want it again but i realize its the illusion of substances they just delay self growth

Honestly giving insight to important lines isn't a bad thing. I find it to be soothing and caring that people understand. I don't see your what your problem is. You're just being mean when there's no reason to be mean. Elliott wouldn't have liked that.

imo hes the greatest song writer and composer of all time

Idk what I would do without this album, all of these songs are so comforting to me and it’s one of the only things that can help me sleep.

Crazy how the stripped down version basically turns this into an entirely new song.

He wrote it, it’s his, heatmiser has different instrumentals
It's a Heatmiser song but it still was written by Elliott. And it may also be my favorite song by him.

on the first sentence, is it "torture yourself" or "doctor yourself" because to me it really sounds like "torture"
it's "talk to yourself"
