Alex Webster is much more articulate than 99% of the garbage that the mass media tries to stuff down our throats. I find it very telling that most of the metal acts that I listen to, (Iron Maiden, Opeth, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Cannibal Corpse...) produce the music they do because they enjoy making it. They aren't trying to sell an image, they are trying to connect with people who have similar interests and that is something that is horrible overlooked when it comes to metal. Great interview.
Alex's down to earth mannerism is hard to believe that he is in a band named Cannibal Corpse and came out with an album entitled Tomb Of The Mutilated with that lovely eye catching uncensored artwork. Bands like CC Deicide Death etc is the best thing to happen to the musical world especially it's war with censorship and bullshit so called obscenity laws.
I think a lot of people don't realize that bands like Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Metallica and other bands that said they hardly get radio play, don't realize that they do. I for example, I'm a DJ at my college radio station, and I play at least two songs of Cannibal corpse every show, which is once a week, and I have gotten a lot of good and bad feedback from the music I play, but I feel bands that are of Metal genre, are the underdogs, and I'm all for that!
Honestly, I really don't care for Cannibal Corpse, but Alex Webster is an amazing bassist, and pretty intelligent as well. Hell, I don't mind just listening to him talk about stuff - it's interesting to hear him talk.
Here in Europe though they play easy on the radio, and i don't doubt that they air also on independent shows in the States too. And if ever existed a huge promotional radio or channel the likes of Mtv for all metal sub-genres (maybe MMtv? ;-) ) Corpse would definitely occupy their hefty fair share of air time. Cheers folks!
Not a death metal fan and dont care for Cannibal Corpse but these guys are insane musicians and I really like hearing Alex talk....well spoken and truly seems like a great guy.
About the part at the beginning, dmetal not making it to radios etc. It would've been interesting to see it make it mainstream, just some point in history when dmetal got played in a lot more places, how the bands themselves would react to that. I bet some wouldn't like it, despite their music spreading.
Hammer Smashed Face isn't horror based completely it's allegedly based on what Alex Webster and Paul Mazerkowicz wanted to do to Chris Barnes. I wander if Cannibal Corpse has visited the golf course where their original rhythm guitarist Bob Rusay has worked since 93.
