I think she's missing the point. No one is going to use this outside especially since you stand out when you do. It's mobile because it's not tethered. It's still supposed to be used in home or in a solitary location like an office. VR won't TRULY go mobile until it's the size of sunglasses( 5-10 years). Even then it's going to take time for the masses to adjust.
+LilRedRasta VR IMO should never be used in public while you're not sitting. You're a danger to yourself and other people. Look at when she waited for the train, you could get so immersed in the game that you let go of the pillar then off you go and fall on the tracks or might walk into someone then bang their phone falls out of their hand. It's a stupid example but could happen. It's never smart to be so disconnected with what's going on around you.
True but once the tech gets small enough and non invasive enough people will do it anyway. You have to factor in as well that eventually there will be pass through filters. Early modders of the rift put cameras on the outside which allowed an opaque virtual experience where you can still somewhat see the real world. That feature will probably become common place. Is it safe? No. But people are stupid lol.
+TheYouUnited Unless you wanna play games while youre shits being stolen sure why not. It leaves you very vulnerable. imo just the home or travel setting would be fine.
I can teach you how to do that if you want. Of course, not for free but for a fee. Let me know if you're interested, and tell your friends and family abuout it! :) Thank you ! Looking forward to teaching you how to toast your iron with your clothes. Cheers mate! =)
+Minkailu Lamin Truth..that its mobile doesnt mean to use it outside..it means you can easily take it to friends...we always play Keep talking and nobody explodes at a friends house with my VR..quite fun
"No one is going to use this outside" 😂😂 Laughs in 2024. How does it feel having such a lack of perception? Probably nothing, just wind in that brain of yours.
You can always buy a chair or stool that swivels in 360 degree rotation so you can rotate in any direction with ease instead of having to move in awkward positions if you're sitting down for your VR enjoyment. Having one that is able to raise high enough that your feet don't touch the ground is an added bonus especially for VR theme park rides where your feet don't touch the floor in the game and in real life, it's more immersive that way for many experiences.
I looooove The Verge's journalistic pieces like this. They show how a new product category (like VR) would be used in the REAL world, not just on a review table talking about specs.
+Kevan Mann there was nothing real world about this. this was the equivalent of taking a Honda civic off-roading and then complaining about the rough ride.
The "real world" test is silly. Why would you want to put something like that on your head outside of home or a friends home etc? Its very portable, doesn't mean you should play it outside at the bus stop and so forth. From the title I had hoped for a no nonsense look and review of the device, without bias. Disappointed.
could the creators of this video please tell me the lens and camera used in this video? also what stabilization gear was used for the smooth shots while walking. PLEASE TELL ME !!!!
+farhan kapdi Just get google cardboard..its just 10$ and works aswell and with any phone..the gear vr only woks with note 4 and S6..and those are expensive devices. I started with google cardboard..and got the gear vr since i already have a note4. Cardboard is just as much fun and the same experience
Daye Lu I didnt said its compareable. But its a nice option if you dont have 900$ for Gear VR plus matching phone. Its a 10$ alternative, working with every phone. I got cardboard, a plastic version of cardboard, the gear vr and rift dk2. So i guess i know what i talk about
I know I’m very late but after watching this video for 4 years I can confirm it’s real, this is a genuine review. This is why I think the Verge are a terrible source
The main video viewing app is Oculus Cinema which has I think 5 different viewing enviroments including the Moon..the void cinema is just a screen..you can size it to any size and place it where you want ..even overhead if you are laying down. The virtual screen is fixed in space so you can still move your head around like normal. Check youtube for Oculus cinema vids. 3d movies are great too.
It's great for watching movies on long plane or train trips. It's all in front of you and you're not expected to turn around (you can reorient if the gyros drift off) and you get a nice big virtual screen - way bigger and better than what they have on the plane seats - and immersive sound as well, with eaebuds. But you might want to add the movies to a MicroSD card on the phone before the trip.
they need a button on the headset that switches the portion of the screen to camera view on the back of the smartphone so that you can still look at the real world without taking the headset off every time. I know they have a feature like this but it should be even more accessible as a built in button since it will make things much more convenient
at least the gear VR doesn't look and feel as silly and heavy as the oculus rift or HTC vive... and no need for frikin wires , Large PCs and controllers..
The merging of VR with your surroudings would be relatively easy to do since if you will notice, your phone camera is unobstructed....just takes software to do the AR.
When they say mobile VR they mean taking it to work for lunch breaks or going to a friend or family's house, not going outside, being on a train or in a car. Though I suppose if it's windy or winter, you could use that for whatever game your playing that has you flying or fighting snow golem's, that way it feels more immersive. you aren't connected to your home pc.
I don't think 'standing beside a subway track, by the edge, right before the subway comes' is the best place to try out VR. I realize now you were going for humour and I genuinely think this is hilarious. Well done.
You can just imaging the idiots who will actually wear this in public! I haven't seen any yet though. I'm just waiting for my Note 7, I really want to try a VR cinema and blow my mum's mind with a rollercoaster vid!
is it fun to use ? did u try to connect a ps4 gamepad to it? im still unsure about the gear vr :/ its sounds interesting but idk... can you put mp4 files and watch them with the vr?
Rosu George I've watched all the sample stuff and a movie on it via Netflix VR. It was pretty cool. On the flip side I haven't used it since as I simply haven't had the time to shut myself away to play with it. I've not played any games as of yet. And yes you can play any files your phone can play and view it via the VR. That works pretty well!
nice :3 thanks for the infos^^ was unsure if i should get it or not :) ... well ofc i wont have time dayly to use it but sometimes it would be fun :) going to get the vr glasses for about 30 witch my contract... (its a pretty nice deal :3) so it wont matter if im not using it on a regular basis (like buying the oculus rift ... and dont use it after the shipping XD! thet would be a real waste of money^^)
Samsung copies Apple? Ridiculous! Little Apple fanboy :) Did you know that Samsung makes iPhone's processors? Tell me some stuff that Samsung copied off of Apple.
love the way samsung bring a genuine piece of kit to the market just like they did with the gear watches and people pay little if no attention however when apple announce there version next year they will have reinvented VR
God this review is stupid. It's like taking your TV outside and saying "it's not really practical" "OH look, I can't drink from the pool and hold my TV with one hand at the same time" . The gear VR isn't perfect, but is really great for normal expériences like : in your room after work / confortably seated in your couch / etc.
can you please tell me what is difference between mobile vr and pc/ laptop vr?.??? And another question..... is internet essential for play vr video ??
I like your commentary and I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences with the Samsung Gear VR. I have the impression you expect VR to be experienced while living your life normally. What is your obsession with needing to drink while using your Gear VR? Have you ever thought of using a straw for drinking (metal straw for coffee/tea).

1. If you watch or play 360° content, use a swivel chair 2. if you can't turn around easily, rather watch Netflix or Oculus Video in a huge Cinema, inseatd of 360° content. 3. Gear VR is perfect for using it on a plane, hotel room, on a camping trip, your couch or maybe even bed.
this review was about her experience with it outdoors as if people would use it outdoors. The whole point of virtual reality is to create an immersive experience without interacting with the outside world.
The cell phone heats up before an hour, almost everything is a sales system, it creates eye fatigue and it is addictive the use of these equipment for being something new, in the everything goes out of fashion
I would not mind using the Netflix app out in public with the Gear VR since it recreates a living room and is a great way to just escape the filthy people around one self while enjoying a flick.
I bought one when it first came out and once again earlier this month. The features have improved by a lot. I like being able to watch my movies in my own theatre as well as UA-cam. The games are a bonus. I can go on for hours of the features I adore but its something that you have to see for yourself. All Ill say is that now the Samsung Galaxy S7's and below are around $30. Brand new sealed in box. I found it on Ebay and was glad I purchased it over again after selling my first one a while back.
Anders Öhlund Yes, I know that. I just find the term _color filter_ pretty cringeworthy as it doesn't do the work that goes into a properly graded video any justice.
As for when you were in the car doing circles and everyone not wearing VR was getting motion sick but you weren't I think that's probably because the VR made it more visually obvious that you were moving while the others could see that the inside of the car wasn't.
I think she's missing the point. No one is going to use this outside especially since you stand out when you do. It's mobile because it's not tethered. +LilRedRasta She's a busy body.
+LilRedRasta I think you're missing the point of this video...
+LilRedRasta She's also missing that VR headPHONES are also needed to make this fully immersive. 3d sight, 3d sound.
You can now buy a full VR experience for the same price as apples new battery case. Tough choice...
hehehe.. VR ftw..
Stefan C. Yeah, so it's a fair comparison
+Thomas Neal "for the same price as apples". Wow, it's that cheap?! "new battery case". Wait, what? Oh right.
+J. van der Linden that's why 's are important
Thomas Neal Aha, but now comes the interesting part, what's the multiple of 's? is it: 's or 'ss or 'ses or 'ss?
Hey I bought a washing machine but I cant really use it when I bring it to starbucks.... I guess it sucks!
+OhMyBooda Awesomeness...lol
*****
you're welcome hehe
hahahaha tumbs up. awsome... :D
I never even thiught of buying this for outside use.
THANK YOU
+TheTRn lol this is how people get mugged
Thanks for the grammar lesson.
+TheTRn Yep... home and hotel rooms only for me. (Watching netflix in a Gear VR in a hotel on a business trip is fantastic, though.)
+TheTRn Hell yes for outside use! Imagine the overlay AR experience through that camera, sweet :D Zombie run has a whole new meaning :D
Why would you even use a VR headset in public?
+TheYouUnited porn!
Because being in public sucks?
+TheYouUnited why not?
+James ya so true
+TheYouUnited Unless you wanna play games while youre shits being stolen sure why not. It leaves you very vulnerable. imo just the home or travel setting would be fine.
I bought a new 52" TV and man it also sucks at a coffee shop.... :(
I know exactly how you feel; my desktop pc was just a total burden on the tube. :(
LeL
+Eduardo Acosta I have 57" TV...
Jaime Ricafrente What are you talking about?
+Eduardo Acosta Your sarcasm is legendary haha
I bought a toaster but I can't iron my clothes with it. There is something wrong with this world.
I can teach you how to do that if you want. Of course, not for free but for a fee. Let me know if you're interested, and tell your friends and family abuout it! :) Thank you ! Looking forward to teaching you how to toast your iron with your clothes.
Cheers mate! =)
would you mind teaching me also?
Roy Sherfan 😂😂😂
Why on earth would you use this outside.
3D-VR-360 I've tried. I just can't find this funny.
+Minkailu Lamin Truth..that its mobile doesnt mean to use it outside..it means you can easily take it to friends...we always play Keep talking and nobody explodes at a friends house with my VR..quite fun
***** LOOOOOOOL
+Richard Head Lmao! I nearly shot my coffea out my nose reading this comment.
"No one is going to use this outside" 😂😂
Laughs in 2024. How does it feel having such a lack of perception?
Probably nothing, just wind in that brain of yours.
She's breaking a lot of rules clearly outlined in the GearVR's "Health & Safety and Warranty Guide."
Doing vr next to a train track... good idea.
Love her line, "I'm watching a progress bar. I'ts a really immersive progress bar."
All she did for the first 3 mins is talk about how it isn't good on the go but no one ever said it was suppose to be... So?
I looooove The Verge's journalistic pieces like this. They show how a new product category (like VR) would be used in the REAL world, not just on a review table talking about specs.
+Kevan Mann there was nothing real world about this. this was the equivalent of taking a Honda civic off-roading and then complaining about the rough ride.
+marcus nartatez Indeed, I did not ever get the point of the video.
As real world as complaining about the bad experience of walking while using a laptop.
The "real world" test is silly. Why would you want to put something like that on your head outside of home or a friends home etc? Its very portable, doesn't mean you should play it outside at the bus stop and so forth.

3:45 really immersive progress bar 😂😂😂
I have a solution for drinking with the Gear VR ITS CALLED A STRAW ; )
I thought that in the end of the video, there would be some kind of sentence saying: "Be smart and stay safe with your VR".
If this was the real world you would've been mugged for that on that subway.
#reallife
+Roy J "If this was the real world". It isn't? Is she in the Matrix or something?
And by 'real world' I mean without the camera guy following her around.
yup . exactly what I was thinking since I'm a heroin addict
I would've stole that shit and sold it for about $40 US currency. in the "real world" of course lol.
+Erick Rosas comment of the day.
That was a good piece Adi. You had me laughing at some of your commentary!
could the creators of this video please tell me the lens and camera used in this video? also what stabilization gear was used for the smooth shots while walking. PLEASE TELL ME !!!!
Chris Villanueva DJI OSMO
At 4:45 such an awesome view of the park, literally one of the best background I have seen.
ALL VR headsets should be like the Playstation VR headset, and feature a flip up visor, so that you can quickly check your surroundings.
+SkemeKOS You can turn on the Passthrough camera on the GearVR and it only takes about two seconds.
Dan Benge
Thats a cool feature too!
+Dan Benge how!
It's in the settings menu. Hold the back button until you get to the settings menu. You have to make sure the cover isn't on.
+SkemeKOS : I will not pay for that extra feature. it's just as easy to take off the head set.
do we need to charge the gear vr or we can charge our phone from the gear vr
Ali Sabri just the phone tho'. Gear get power from the phone
Iphone user here. I would buy a galaxy device just for the Gear VR if I had the money.
I know right
+farhan kapdi I got the gear vr yesterday and it's SICK
Don't worry, Apple will release an iVR in a year or two, it'll be £1000 and feature 100 lenses.
+farhan kapdi Just get google cardboard..its just 10$ and works aswell and with any phone..the gear vr only woks with note 4 and S6..and those are expensive devices. Just cant wait to start making drone races with this vr headset
Yeeeaahhh having a VR headset on near a subway platform, probably not a good idea
i missed these kind of videos. keep it up!
Cool, but weird...
+HakaTech And First
+HakaTech but second
+G33_Wizz it has. lol
+G33_Wizz it has you only need to put on your gear vr to see it
This is cutting edge. Well done.
tried this out today. it was rad af
I love that you used it out in public. Awesome!
Is this a serious video or is it parody?
o_O
I know I’m very late but after watching this video for 4 years I can confirm it’s real, this is a genuine review. This is why I think the Verge are a terrible source
was nice to see a review with out the hardcore nerdy persspective, witch i have seen alot of. Great job man
can you just watch a regular movie with the glasses???? you know, just laying down relaxing instead of moving around and looking around????
Yes
+Fractalite thanks
+Raul Velasquez There's even a Netflix VR app for it.
The main video viewing app is Oculus Cinema which has I think 5 different viewing enviroments including the Moon..the void cinema is just a screen..you can size it to any size and place it where you want ..even overhead if you are laying down. yea i bouht but is not that WOW, I got bored after an hour.

just a hunch. I don't think you're supposed to use this in public. that's just me though

Best one so far is probably Microsots Hola project.
You put a visor on your head and you still see where you are.
The review told me NOTHING about the the Gear VR. This looks like an ego trip.
Hi Adi, sitting in a comfy swivel office chair makes it work pretty well.
Is that healthy to have the phone so near in front of the face ? o.O
+masterpiececondition. de nothing is healthy....
Im returning mine as it gives nausea after just 10 mins
see people always complain about the nausea in EVERY vr device, but I'm one of the lucky ones who DOESN'T get motion sickness.
Yes same! thats what started it with me! Rilix kind of put me off it.
Idea. How about a VR swivel chair? Is that next? With plug ins available, hand controllers, etc? A place to store the VR? This is what we Need now!
This should use the camera whilst in VR mode and give you a small view of what is in front of you.
Are u serious? I think you're overthinking it a bit.
The merging of VR with your surroudings would be relatively easy to do since if you will notice, your phone camera is unobstructed....just takes software to do the AR.
why dont you just stay home and play with it!!!!
No one is going to buy a VR headset to use outdoors. Pointless review.
I don't think 'standing beside a subway track, by the edge, right before the subway comes' is the best place to try out VR. I realize now you were going for humour and I genuinely think this is hilarious. Well done.
get a damn straw!!
Samsung made a revolution in mobile virtual reality for all of us
You can just imaging the idiots who will actually wear this in public! I haven't seen any yet though. I'm just waiting for my Note 7, I really want to try a VR cinema and blow my mum's mind with a rollercoaster vid!
to bad note 7 wont happen :( did u choose another phone? im thinking about getting the s7 edge or meybe wait for note8?
Rosu George yup I got the S7 Edge. I'm really happy with it and it works great with the Gear VR. I though it would be gimmicky but it's really good!
is it fun to use ? did u try to connect a ps4 gamepad to it? im still unsure about the gear vr :/ its sounds interesting but idk... can you put mp4 files and watch them with the vr?
Rosu George I've watched all the sample stuff and a movie on it via Netflix VR. It was pretty cool. This video was so unexpectedly funny, that I'm going to have to share it with several of my friends.
She should use a straw to drink. Ovi
You know there was only one thing this was really designed for ;))))))
Wow alcoholic
what camera did you use in filming this?
They copied Apple
+hamhead1005 no Samsung copies everybody especially Apple
+Bungle2010 no
***** i know
Samsung copies Apple? Ridiculous!
Little Apple fanboy :)
Did you know that Samsung makes iPhone's processors?
Tell me some stuff that Samsung copied off of Apple.
FPSKorea and soon their screen, sony make their cameras and speaker. Is this an apple device or a nexus clone?
Ever used a straw to drink out of a cup? :)
Are you a writer? Your narration in this video is really good.
YOU HAD ME LAUGHING 57 seconds into your product review! hahah very informative and entertaining
love the way samsung bring a genuine piece of kit to the market just like they did with the gear watches and people pay little if no attention however when apple announce there version next year they will have reinvented VR

FANTASTICALLY FUNNY AND INFORMATIVE VIDEO. thanks for posting it.
I love the practical applications of this video.
The circles, I got ill just thinking about it. Great video.
This is useful for outdoors when night vision is used for walking in a dark area I would say ... who knows it might be handy...
Cool, but I probably wouldn't use this in public only at home or something.
I found that a swiveling chair is the best way to watch 360 VR videos. It makes it so effortless to look around. Try it.
can you please tell me what is difference between mobile vr and pc/ laptop vr?.???
And another question..... is internet essential for play vr video ??
is it possible to connect the vr box into computer and watch movies online?

This video will be history like how the first virtual reality is used when there is everyone using it with great application on it in real world .
ordered this yesterday, seems cool and futuristic
I would only use this on a very long trips , especially at night or when the scenery dull.
Question what camera n lens did you use to shoot this awesome video?
Mark Linsangan from TechnoBuffalo works here now! Awesome!
"this is so fetch" perfect statement describe this
this review was about her experience with it outdoors as if people would use it outdoors. The whole point of virtual reality is to create an immersive experience without interacting with the outside world.
I want one so bad
I use a swivel chair I bought at a 2nd hand store. Works great!
Waves of grace huh
The cell phone heats up before an hour, almost everything is a sales system,
it creates eye fatigue and it is addictive the use of these equipment for being
something new, in the everything goes out of fashion
I was wondering if someone could use the Innovator straps on the basic VR (the vr in this video). Same connections?
they should make a pip type that runs the camra so you have the open to see wile watching
I would not mind using the Netflix app out in public with the Gear VR since it recreates a living room and is a great way to just escape the filthy people around one self while enjoying a flick.

what is verge's video color filter?

+MeisterYodarkus it is a thing
UA-cam Commenter Go to the youtube channel "DSLR Guide"
Anders Öhlund Yes, I know that. I just find the term _color filter_ pretty cringeworthy as it doesn't do the work that goes into a properly graded video any justice.
Please tell me where this shot took place? 04:58
Who else thinks that the Gear VR would make an excellent Christmas gift?
As for when you were in the car doing circles and everyone not wearing VR was getting motion sick but you weren't I think that's probably because the VR made it more visually obvious that you were moving while the others could see that the inside of the car wasn't.
Use this in public and you're gonna get jacked.
You are living in the most amazing city in the world :))
You don't have to wear a Gear VR and walk around :))
Being John Malkovich would be the ultimate VR movie.
