    Polestar hasn't officially released news yet but I found in their latest investors presentation that Polestar will have access to Supercharger network in North America via an adapter on June 24th. I'm guessing we'll see Volvo doing the same at around the same time. Just adding this for extra information pertaining to other brands and their access to NACS.

    The big difference between high and low quality adapters will be number of insertions before contacts deteriorate. Weaker contacts produce resistance causing heat and less power transfer to your EV. After numerous insertions on the cheap ones, arcing occurs causing carbon for more resistance / heat and eventually a fire. Amazon probably will offer some from China near $99 that won’t have the new UL listing when completed.

    Another great video Tom. Great of you to read those disclaimers for the viewers out there so they know full well in case they decide to go with one of those two adapters from two reputable companies. I also agree that most drivers out there are not going to wait several months for their official adapters.
    I can add that there are other UA-camr EV drivers out there using them. Especially the A2Z one. So there are plenty of videos for the viewer to review as part of their proper research before making their decision. It's better to show these than them just buying any cheap brand from the web that could possibly backfire on them.

    When Tesla launched the CCS1 to NACS adapter, I immediately bought one for road tripping thinking some areas wouldn’t have enough Superchargers for our model S. To my surprise, I’ve never needed a non-Tesla DC fast charger and haven’t used the adapter. I’m certain the NACS to CCS1 adapter will get used for road tripping our EQS. Sadly, MB appears to be at the end of the line.

    Have you considered discussing how the various chargers integrate with battery storage? I am particularly interested in the FranklinWH system. I believe they have a product coming out called eHub that provides a specific interface for chargers (though I don't know how it works), but does support VtoL (VtoH, VtoG) so the interface can also use the car battery as part of the storage system as well as charge them.

      None of them will work on AC chargers.

    • @AnonymousFreakYT
      @AnonymousFreakYT 10 місяців тому

      The adapters don’t connect the AC pins on the CCS side. All chargers (Superchargers, Destination, CCS, J1772) have a “handshake” process before connecting the high-power pins. Tesla Superchargers/Destination chargers require the car “respond properly” before turning on the 240V AC or 400V DC power. If you plug one of these into a Destination charger, it won’t receive the right response, so won’t ever put 240V AC power on the pins.
      Likewise if you use a TeslaTap or similar AC adapter for Destination charging to J1772, and plug it into a Supercharger, the Supercharger wont’ get the right response, and won’t turn on 400V DC.

    Tom, do you have any insight as to how older EVs, such as my 2015 Chevy Spark EV, will be able to use Tesla's network when the companies are authorized? I assume GM will not send me a free adapter, so I would be one who would need to purchase one. Thanks.

    • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
      @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney  10 місяців тому +1

      Honestly, I don't think the Spark will even be compatible. I know they have a lot of difficulty charging (if they can at all) charging on Electrify America. Chevrolet isn't supporting the Spark's compatibility with networks because it's a discontinued vehicle, that was basically made for compliance. EA tried to get GM to help them with the compatibility issues and was told they wouldn't spend any time or effort because it's a discontinued low-volume vehicle.

    • @AnonymousFreakYT
      @AnonymousFreakYT 10 місяців тому

      So far, neither GM nor Ford has said anything about their older vehicles supporting it at all, much less offering an adapter. For example, the Ford Parts website listing for the adapter only says the Mach-E, Lightning, and eTransit are supported, not the older CCS-equipped Ford Focus EV. I wouldn’t hold out any hope that the Spark EV would be supported either.
      It appears that Plug and Charge compatibility is a requirement. So the Bolt EV with the software update to support P&C should work, but almost certainly not the Spark EV (or Focus EV on the Ford side.)
      Edit: Ah, Ford has updated the FAQ - it now specifically says the Focus EV *ISN’T* compatible. (It calls out both that older Focus EV don’t have CCS at all, and that later Focus EV don’t support the “Blue Oval Charge Network” (AKA Plug and Charge) therefore can’t use it.
      BUT! I would imagine that initiating the charge via the Tesla app would still work once Tesla opens it up to *ALL* CCS vehicles. Which won’t be until after all the “partnership agreement” manufacturers have sent out all their adapters.

    • @Paul-cj1wb
      @Paul-cj1wb 10 місяців тому

      @@AnonymousFreakYT No. Not ALL CCS EVs will work even after all manufacturers are allowed access. Those older slower charging EVs or hybrids won't be allowed. Superchargers are for fully electric only. Tesla knows well how to manage their network and keeping EVs that can cause issues or clog up their stations is one of the reasons why it's the best charging network on the planet.

    • @AnonymousFreakYT
      @AnonymousFreakYT 10 місяців тому

      @@Paul-cj1wb Do you have any source to back up that claim? My old 2014 Model S topped out at about 60kW charging by the time I sold it, and Tesla never banned me from using Superchargers. That’s about the same as a Chevy Bolt, which nobody has said won’t be supported.
      And there are no “not fully electric” vehicles in North America with a CCS port. The only PHEV with DC charging at all is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which has a CHAdeMO port, thus can’t use Supercharger even with this.

    • @Paul-cj1wb
      @Paul-cj1wb 10 місяців тому

      @@AnonymousFreakYT The Tesla Model S uses proprietary Tesla software. I'm talking about older, slower charging CCS vehicles basically not "fully" supported by the manufacturer any longer. It's based on agreements available or discussed online, such as Ford's which includes an agreement for only the Mach-E, the Lightning, and the eTransit, as you yourself mentioned above. And of course, future Ford EVs.
      The Bolt will more than likely be supported. That's a more modern EV. There might be a time constraint for it when the Supercharger station is getting full similar to the current rates going up after 80% that Tesla currently uses, and the dollar per minute for idling.
      However, to keep it fair, since slower charging EVs such as the Bolt or the Toyota bZ4X each have the potential of taking up a stall (possibly 2 spots/stalls) for an hour to an hour and a half, they'll likely get a warning when the station is close to full that their rates will go up after 30 minutes of charging. Something like 50 cents or even up to a dollar higher per minute after that. Not per kilowatt as they take too long per kilowatt added. Likely based on the VIN to keep drivers from cheating.
      But we'll have to wait as see. That's just based on what Tesla does now. They will do what needs to be done to make sure their stations do not become overly congested and frustrate drivers. They don't even put up with their own EVs taking too long, so they're certainly not going to put up with other slower charging EVs slowing down their stations for too long.
      It's what makes them the most reliable, smoothest running network on the planet. They are not EA or EVgo. They will not allow it to become such fiascos.

      Just curious, why are asking? Bolts are not going to get any higher charging speeds than their 55kw max on Superchargers. You can basically get that on any 50kw charger. Or the full 55kw at any 62kw, or 100kw, or 150kw charger, etc. ChargePoint, EVgo, and EV have plenty of those around. And others will likely leave those available to slower charging EVs as soon as they get Supercharger access.

I thought of Tesla extension cords years ago but never pursued it because there would not be any cooling and pose unnecessary risk to charge an ICE’d Supercharger. Every junction adds the equivalent of 10’ of cable resistance and voltage losses seen as heat. The only way to reduce that is to either have a superconductor cable like gold which ain’t happening or oversize the gauge wiring to reduce the resistance. That’s not to under emphasize the need of absolutely the highest quality connectors and fitment tolerances. I suspect Tesla used a solid metal DC connection with the pins as part of that hardware which is why it’s so compact. If the others use pins and wires in the build they will have additional losses. 23:08

      Nope, what needs to change are the chargers and how they are being installed because the current installation technique as is it's both space inefficient and inefficient on how many cars can charge at a time.
      If Tesla can give two vehicles access to the charger at the same time similar to some CCS chargers in the states then we're off to the races.
      Btw the current plug location on the Rivian line up is fine and so is the location on the R2 and R3 respectively. It's no different than how the fuel door on some ICE cars switch sides depending on the manufacturer and it has never been an issue. It can be easily fixed if Tesla added another plug or made double sided superchargers that gave you the ability to pull up to them instead of having to reverse and/or unhitch to even get access to them. The way the chargers are being built is the problem not the location of the plug on other vehicles.
      It's very obvious Tesla never had plans to open up their network to non-teslas if they did they would have already known they would need to make adjustments to work with the location of the plug on other vehicles but they didn't. Tesla should have been building their chargers to accommodate all vehicles even before they opened up the network. The blame is not on the other manufacturers for putting their plug "on the wrong side". It's on Tesla for not making the changes to their chargers from the beginning.
