Why oil the big end of the piston before the bearings go in?

Correct bearing shell insertion technique to rod and cap is to align the tang in the companion tang recess in the rod/cap and with the tang side split line edge of the bearing shell aligned with the cap/rod split line, very lightly deflect the shell as it is pressed into its final resting place. In doing this the sheel is rotated about one split line edge. It is poor practice to just sit the shell on the rod or cap saddle and scrape both sides of the rear of the shell against the split line edges of the rod/cap and in doing so realise the "swarf" mentioned. That swarf should never be generated in the first place with correct shell installation technique.

Can piston rings rotate once the piston is in the cylinder?

Engine building should never taken lightly and it dosnt matter if its a lawn mower or a Ferrari, time taken at this stage and first run in is just as important.
