Just got a 78 FJ40 and I'm addicted to your videos! Power steering is leaking. Not sure if its the steering gear box or a problem with the conversion kit. Thinking of replacing entire steering with a new Saginaw power steering unit. What do you suggest?

Saginaw has its place, but some builds are better off with a different kind of power steering. If we are trying to keep as much Toyota DNA as possible, we might do an OEM power steering conversion, or a 60 series conversion. If we are running 35" tires or larger, or installing a Cummins R2.8, we go saginaw. My guess is you have a mini truck conversion. Do you know where the leak is? It could be something simple and easy to fix. My guess is you have a mini truck conversion with a saginaw pump. Am I right?

We have a 1982 fj40 just turned over 63k original miles last weekend. We have owned it since 1994. Would be great to talk to you about certain things about how a 82 should be from the factory. My father restored it when we got it in 94 and is very close to stock.

Jeremiah, another great job. My pax side seat belt anchor has come apart. Would you have any seat belt anchors for the 82 model? If not, can you rebuild mine if I shipped it to you? Thanks and best wishes

Thanks Khalid! We get all of our OEM parts from Toyota. There are several on like Toyota suppliers, and Cruiser Outfitters in Utah is a great source!

Did you use Toyota power steering components or the blast it out the front Saginaw method? I've got Saginaw on my fj40 crawler but I bought all the Toyota power steering components to do my stock 76 fj40 with. But I've got decisions to make about it. I'm in California and the cutoff for smog exempt is still 1975. I've also got a doner 69 that could make my smog cert troubles go away, but those who know the differences between the 69 and 76 will know right away that that 76 is no 69 so I'm reluctant. I just know that I want power steering in it before I tear my rotator cuff parallel parking the Iron Pig.

I'm sorry I didn't see your question earlier. You are in a predicament. Whatever you do don't switch the VINs! As far as power steering, we do OEM power steering on some builds and saginaw (properly done) on others. Usually it depends on tire size and whether or not the rig has lockers.

Great vehicle but in original form it would have been completely different to drive, not very pleasant on bitumen roads, too loud, too hard, very noisy. But they were indestructible off road unlike Land rovers of the day which broke down all the time, and most people replaced the engines.
