  • “For me and the Havasupai people who came here today, we came to recognize this area as our own, and to officially change the name to Havasupai Gardens, and back to our traditional name, Ha’a Gyoh. To us, that is very important because it’s a symbol, almost saying that this is always going to be part of us now-forever. What was once taken away, is slowly being returned. The first step is a name, the second step is we are here-physically.” Spend a Minute Out In It in the first phase of healing: recognition.

Really well done video. The naming has been long overdue, but nonetheless a welcome acknowledgment of the indigenous history of this remarkable place.

Imagine all maps reset to a 1000 years ago to match this change. Maybe we should go back further with the maps. The idea that we need new maps all the time as territory changes hands and names, how silly is that? Be gone with any map that doesn't show the owners from the beginning of time and ignore every change that came afterward. A welcome acknowledgement of the indigenous history of all remarkable places.
