The area was once inhabited by Ancient Puebloans and some believe that the ancestral spirits still remain. Every year, sisters Tonisha and Tonielle Draper spend time in the Canyon learning about their Navajo heritage from their father and grandmother. In this short film from the National Park Experience, watch Tonisha share her knowledge in the Miss Central Navajo Pre-Teen pageant and continue the tribe's traditions for another generation.

Beautiful. her singing is mesmerizing and I am really glad that the father is ensuring their tradition remains alive. much respect for the original Americans.
smurfette Kanya I love your comment. Sentiments of my heart.
Thank you i am the girl that sings i appreciate your love and support
@@tonishadraper7605 you go girl, keep your culture alive. You're amazing.
There not amarican thats what u called them they are natives
Keanu Smith omg native means like from that land and first to that land so they are native Americans or the first Americans they lived in what is called North and south America LONG before settlers from Europe came so get ur facts straight
Her singing in the fields is so beautiful it gives be goosebumps.

@_nomorecheeseplz Beware of the Criminal Anglo Saxons Americans! They might , "STILL", come around to steal the LITTLE you have left
what song is it
@@limitlesstori6813 I don't know what song it is, unfortunately
Every. Single. Time.
What we did to these people is atrocious. We need more education in schools about the natives and they should be honored and respected.
YOU didnt do anything
Your extremely distant relatives, if you even want to call them that, did atrocious things to native people. You have done nothing but feel an unnecessary guilt put upon you which isn’t right.
I may not have personally done something but I take responsibility of the part my ancestors did. I do not feel guilt. I feel empathy and a strong desire to make it right.
@@Lee-Leee good so dont say WE
@@abdelrahmanwael2551 I said what I said and I do not take it back. You reacted to my statement for a reason. I react to the injustice for a reason.
I honestly cried watching that young girl in the pageant. These people have had their land, language, culture and personhood stolen from them, but are fighting to reclaim it. In that pageant, even if to a smallish audience, the young girls were not judged by their appearance but rather performing their traditions to others who will appreciate them, keeping them alive in the process. May they all have bright futures.
Every child should be taught their history and culture, to know who they are and who went before them. Great little video.
I agree
That is shunned in the US. Assimilate or get hate. Even if you were born in the US and assimilate, but you lack one of the American assent, oh yeah...
Except for the black kids. We should mock them by saying things like "we waz kangz" and teach them the only history they have is slavery... right?
Bee Thao Since when is that shunned in the US? As far as I know, US is a frikin mixing pot of cultures.
Most people, like me are "mutts". Roughly in order of % Puerto Rican, Irish, French, Cherokee, German, Scottish, Welsh and Nordic. Just saying at one point in time we were all brothers and sisters and at one point in time my ancestors fought their own brothers and sisters.
I'm not of Native American
ancestry but I can appreciate
the beauty and complexity of
the Navajo and their desire to
maintain their identity in an
ever changing world!
Abandoned Indian. I almost started crying when she said that. My great grandmother was full blood Native American, but she was so ashamed of it that she burned all her papers that connected her with any reservation. A lot of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have done research to try too figure out at least what tribe she belonged to, but there are a lot of reservations in New Mexico alone. I just wish I could understand where I came from and the beautiful culture my great grandma left behind. I don't think I have enough native blood at this point for it to matter, but my brother and I keep looking
you will always matter and be an important part of your culture :)
That's so sad to hear that the actions of one person has affected multiple people.
I am not native American but I'm from Central America Nicaragua to be specific and I'm thrilled to know my roots.
Please keep searching who You are for your children and your children's children. I think every child and adult has every right to know who they are and where they are from.
My grandma's grandma left her husband and children in AR ,,,,hoping for a better life for them. She went to a reservation in OK.
When my grandma was about 8-10 years old they traveled by covered wagon to OK. So HER mom could visit her mom.
It was done over several months. My granny said it was a wonderful time for her.
Indians r from india
That girl in the green dress... her song brought me to tears. Now, I'm not a crier, but something touched me even though I don't know the words to her song. I hope she never stops singing.
Respect to Native Americans from Ireland, They helped The Irish when we had a famine by sending money to feed us. when the English sent any food that could grow & all the livestock over to England. Respect ❤
My great grandmother was Native American & Irish! ❤️
that was the chahta not the diné
I’m Native & also have Irish in me. (Must me why I liked the name Kieran so much I named my 1st Son Kieran)

Hey a Navajo here! I just wanna say that your country actually helped out the Native American community when we were going through the hardest part of COVID. Bc of the deed that my ancestors did with the famine, you guys setted up a huge donation that was very helpful for our elders and those with no job. So thank you for what yall contributed to our people ☺️
wow an actual video of nation geographic which is longer than 2 minutes on youtube! what a time to be alive
Julio Chao lmao

haha that's all you took from this video ppl like you is what's wrong with this world
I really enjoyed this video awesome job
I'm English and visited Canyon de Chelly in 1989. I was at the river near sunset and about to walk back to the top when a group of Navajo of all ages started to descend the side of the canyon while singing. Their song echoed and resonated around the canyon in a sweeping sound and remains one of the most beautiful and evocative things I've ever heard. Somehow it felt like a people reaching across the ages to the heart of the human condition.
Incredible
As a native Hawaiian I feel a kinship with the Native American culture. Soooooo much love and respect for them.
we feel the same
I am not navajo, but I grew up there and have family that still lives in chinle. It's so beautiful, these young ladies are wonderful. I hope they truly do continue to preserve their culture. Nizhoni!!
proud to be Native American (Full blooded Navajo) ❤✊
Cheryl Kee that's dope you look mexican but many mexicans have high native dna
Ramon mendez I can tell difference between Natives and Mexicans. Mexicans have paler skin and have that Spainish dark hair and mustaches for the men. How could a whole country let their women be subjugated like that.
Brody Hill natives usually got the darker hair but yea
You’re soooo pretty
Cheryl Kee i am also a full blooded igorot native of the philippines whom the yankees colonized..,i can say we have lots in common when it comes to traditional practices and customs..,
"Dad", to these children, to this family, - you are GREAT ! God bless you, your family and your people !
THIS is what you tube, and internet sharing is SUPPOSED to be about. A beautiful story shared by an awesome family, thank you very much, PEACE.
cried really hard while watching this. I want to connect and get to know more about my culture. I want to speak Navajo and do grass dance, but I feel like I'm trapped and I dont know where to start. I live off the reservation away from my grandparents and it seems like my parents arent doing anything to help me connect, but I am trying.. I love my culture so much. 💚💚💚
One thing that could help you is Navajo language class in Duolingo! It's still in beta but I believe they'll update it soon. (It's also free)😊 Hold on to every bit of information about your culture, you deserve to know who you are and your beautiful culture deserves to bloom! 💕
@Mjsi619 Yeah! They added it a few weeks ago if I remember correctly 😊🙌 I hope they make courses for a few other Native American languages as well
If you go to the centers near the reserves, they help you learn about your culture & connect once they know you're native blooded. The internet is your best friend
Hey! During COVID, Radmilla Cody holded classes for young students where she reads to them virtually and she has key Navajo words that she phrases out in the meetings. I recommend that and if you’re able to, take classes from community colleges; I am starting late on learning Navajo and thankfully my school has Navajo classes. Schools include: Maricopa CC, ASU, UofA, NAU, schools in Utah, UNM, other schools in NM, and even Stanford! There is also textbooks to follow along online and you can get Rosetta Stone. I wish you good luck on your Navajo language journey 😊
Hugs. There's no need for guilt or shame. One step at a time!
That song she just sang....
It sounded like an angel singing. Made me cry
I am from El Salvador and they look just like us and my heart breaks by how much I have lost my heritage

26 seconds in and my heart is already breaking at how beautiful this video is. I desperately hope that Native American folk tradition and culture can make a strong comeback. Everyone should be able to love where they come from and who they are.
i cried real hard knowing that navajo people were killed tortured and evacuated from their own homes heartbreaking to imagine combined with that beautiful melody by the lil girl god bless girls shine and live ur true identity
I never knew. this is terrible.
sagar baishya that was with every tribe most were wiped out
All indigenous people succumbed to assimilation in a global level! Many of us lost our cultural identity as a people!
I really hope yall aren't from the US.
bbyskittles91 native Americans are from the USA.
when the young lady sings at the end with the drum......what a beautiful voice....she can really sing..........
Reminds me of when I was a kid in the 80's. Would go to Chinle and Many Farms, AZ. My family lives off the rim of Canyon De Chelly. Actually called Canyon Del Muerto. The best summers I ever had riding in trucks through the watery canyon and hiking. The nature and wildlife was spectacular. BBQ's and camping was so fun. My Grandpa Nelson Draper was recruited off the Reservation and joined the US Marines in 1942. His Brother Teddy Draper and Himself were Navajo Code Talkers in WWII.
Upon his discharge from the US Marines he moved his family to California where I was raised. Grandpa worked a Civil Service job at a Marine Base in Barstow, CA. My wife is Navajo from Shiprock, NM. Those summer vacations in the 80's were some of the best times of my life.
Dont know if there are any navajo code talkers left
Namaste Ji ..fine..
Proud to be Taachini!! Watching the girls in the canyon yelling brought back many memories of my childhood in the canyon... spider rock is truly sacred land to us.
Those two girls have beautiful voices
THE REAL AMERICANS ARE NATIVE AMERICANS WE WILL NEVER FORGET THAT
FAKETEEN KILLAH Thank you. From a Native American. Seems like we are forgotten
We are still alive my native brother
THANK YOU so much, from someone who is not from US , but admire and respect your culture, languages & the love that you have for your own people.
Lorraine Evans so so far from forgotten. I am only a quarter and I honor you.
Thank you yes we are ❤
Such a beautiful spirit. I love her singing voice.
Our history is stained with such negativity, I'm glad these girls get the chance to keep their culture alive. I believe in celebrating different cultures and getting the chance to be different because that's what is beautiful.
I'm so glad to be Navajo!💕
I’m very proud that National Geographic would make a video of my culture, this canyon is very beautiful with so much stories from our ancestors, I’m very proud to be a Navajo, and keeping this tradition strong
Tonisha can move mountains with her voice and singing. Video was seriously touching
Can't stop crying... This is the most heartbroken I've ever been....
Omg that little girl's voice is so beautiful. I can listen forever.
I love how classy and respectful the pageants are...nothing like the classless, over-exposing stuff seen on American TV pageants.
You don't have to watch it on TV per se to know it happens and to know what it looks like. Especially since it's something talked about in magazines, in various news outlets, etc. It's one of those topics that many, many people seem to know about.
Athena Kitty Well I get what you mean but the Navajo are Americans too even more American than the average American.
The opening scenes where the girls are singing and it is echoing through the canyon are hauntingly beautiful.
The singing invoked so much and so many emotions for me I couldn't help but cry.
abandoned native. thats what i am. trying to learn more of the navajo roots
I would be happy to teach you ❤️ us Navajo and Native Americans need to stick together to preserve our culture
Kira Yagami Kira, would you be willing to teach a non Navajo? I am Mohawk and my lineage & his wisdom died with my grandfather. I am only less than a quarter and it speaks so deeply to me, as I was raised in and within nature until 18 and beyond, though when he passed the teachings stopped. Many blessings x
I am willing to teach anyone who is willing to learn and help our language live on 😉
angel aviles I am kinda abandon Indian my parents didn’t teach me much about my clans and culture which is sad
I don't know if it's for every other tribe or nation, but I am an abandoned Indian trying to find out my tribes and what roots i come from. I am black with native ancestry. I need help 😔
Power to my people🙌🏽✊🏽 we are still here and always will be
I believe I am an abandoned native,One night I had a vivid dream about two native grandparents dressed in their traditional clothes. They spoke to me, you are finally here. We having calling you ( or we have been waiting) for a long time. I pray to the great spirit, I been listening to native chants. I can feel it in me, lost memories, that remain in my spirit. I can't help it, but to feel lost and at the same time I know I'm not alone.
wow that's beautiful
Their voices are incredible.
These girls are so blessed to have a Daddy & Gma to teach them about their culture & traditions with pride. I hope the one girl's wish comes true. That 100 years from now, her grandchildren & great-grandchildren will be taught the same stories & traditions. May it go on much longer than 100 years!
That was awesome when that ancient melody got woven in with modern English lyrics about posting on social media lol.
Great video!
MoreAmerican ikr lol very cool
I know thats right i heard it too and said Come on girls and tell the Truth!!!
What wonderful kids and dad, putting others before themselves. That's the spirit to live by.
My respect from Michoacan Mexico.
Beautiful video, I love seeing ancient cultures still being upheld and respected. I hope they continue to learn and pass down this knowledge to future generations. Cultures like this shouldn't be lost and it makes me sad to think of all those who lost their chance to really learn more due to white societal expectations. Amazing job ladies!
These are modern people fam, they just might not subscribe to a culture of constant upheaval and corporate and political disruption as do many:)
Mk S. it's dieng out and I'm Navajo reservation
This is beautiful
😊
I love hearing about native American people and their heritage. I also love their music and voices. Everything about them is beautiful
I was there at Canyon de Chilly last week on May 13 and May 14. Love the Navajo people. Stayed over nite at Navajo town Chinle. Learned so much about the history and culture. Kind people. Inspiring. Beautiful country. If you are touring, take the four hour Jeep drive . They also sell beautiful Navajo jewelry at the valley.
I love that so much hopefully the next time you come I will meet you
I wish I could meet one day Natives from the US or Canada, this is my lifelong dream. As long as I remember I admire and respect Natives for the way they love their culture, languages, and love & respect for nature that they have. Long life to Natives, amen!
634 Native Tribes still exist in Canada, pretty sure you'll meet one there....
We are here, come on by..
Come to Arizona in the north, place is native land lmao
They are so cute. This like my favorite video right now. Im Cherokee, my wife is Navajo.
GOD BLESS THEM AND THEIR FATHER ESPECIALLY FOR TEACHING HIS CHILDREN AND RAISING THEM IN THE CANYON!!!! THEY'RE VERY BLESSED!!!
Such a beautiful voice she has.
I'm so happy this video was finally uploaded ❤❤❤❤
I am a Navajo and I learned a lot from my grandma also. I was in the pageant but lost I am still great full to have learned my clan and language at a very early age.
The moment she said Abandoned Indian I felt a heaviness in my heart. My grandmother may not have shared the Din’e ways but I feel the ancestors.
Our paths will join again 🤗
Thank you for this video and sharing these amazing little lights that will continue on the Ancestors ways.
I absolutely love this video. I have a lot of respect for Native American culture, I really admire it and how they keep fighting to keep their culture alive. I wish history would have been in their favor, every time I learn and read more about their history I get really upset. Love from Málaga in Andalucía, Spain, to all Native Americans!
Your ancestors are speaking through you to allow you to know about them because they run through your veins, blood and DNA.....they are technically still here, your keep them here by being alive!!!

Wow. I'm so grateful you said that and have that mind set. 🙏🙏🙏

You keep them here by being alive....that hit hard

Hi :) Maybe you can help me, I'm planning to visit US next year, and I would like to visit reservation or other place significant to you native americans. I'm fascinated by your culture, how close you are with nature, values, philosphy. I would love to feel that indigenous spirit, at least once in my life. So if you have any idead where I could go to learn more please let me know. Love from Poland :)

It’s so important that the kids keep their Heritage alive, so many atrocities have happened to the natives. They re such a beautiful kind wholesome peoples.

This film is full of beauty and magic from the land and the people living there. What a wonderful glimpse it gives into both.
Seeing the kids is a real joy. That little girl can really sing great.
her voice makes me tear up
Finally I found a video about Navajos. I’m full blooded Navajo. They talk about the other tribes a lot but I love those videos too since it helps educate me more about other tribes out there not just Navajos. I’m so glad they spoke the native language. I speak it half fluently and understand it half too. Unlike my brother and sister who didn’t get a chance to learn from our grandma like I did since I was very set on learning everything I could when I was younger. Now I’m sort of the translator for them on things I understand, like stories others tell. my grandma said that it’s good that I al least know how to introduce myslef in Navajo and that I know my clans and that I can talk in Navajo with confidence and not be embarrassed about it. Like all the other kids.
Beautiful people and beautiful culture, it sad when some try to claim it as their culture and dismiss the actual Native People. There are a lot of misinformed people like that, that should be proud of their own culture and not try to steal yours.
Thank you for this video. It’s vital that these cultures do not die out and the young people know the richness of their heritage. Many blessings from UK 🇬🇧
