I read that story as a child--I think I was twelve. It has stayed with me all these years. The references Carter makes to Blake and to Rossetti fill my heart with joy, and her prose---is like a painting done by Brian Froud. I found you from the Shirley Jackson video about The Witch. Jackson I read in college and adored her enough I bought all of her books. And Carter--well, I of course had to get the Bloody Chamber and now I read that every year. Thank you. Your reading voice is lovely.
Thanks so much for watching and for your comments. I adore Jackson and Carter, could read The Bloody Chamber endlessly, the prose is just so incredible, and The-Erl King is a particular fave of mine. We’re releasing an analysis video very soon that discusses Carter, so look out for that! - Rosie
the scattered, dreamlike narration reminds me of some of my favorite horror games. this story would lend itself so well to being adapted into a video game. you'd lose some of the magic of the narration, of course. nothing transfers perfectly to a different medium. but those shifts in perspective, the push and pull of compulsion and choice, intoxication and revulsion-- those are things that'd be really interesting to try to incorporate into gameplay.
22:03 omg wig snatched (literally)😮💨🥱 yass girl slayy (literally) 💀 did he really think she was gonna be in a cage ??? smh bro is delulu the ego of that man is insaneeee
I absolutely adore this comment, and also the one about the erl king having cryptid rizz fr. Something about using modern slang and acronyms to give an extremely accurate and concise analysis of this incredibly verbose story just tickles me pink!
I remember analysing this and the Snow Child in college. Never heard of gothic literature before, could barely write a proper essay in English and I became so obsessed, I started writing my own gothic short stories. My English dramatically improve and I’ve learned what feels like a 100 new ways to describe the weather. I’m so happy this channel was recommended to me! It has quickly become one of my favourite channels ever x 💖💖💖 x
I adore the effortless switching between the different persons and tenses. It shouldn’t be so natural; her skill is awe-inspiring. Beautifully reading, this was a delight to listen to!
Listened to the end and I am convinced that my two cats interpreted the story as a liberating metaphor, because they fell asleep afterwards. I was expecting a Gothic Tom Bombadil, and they wandered in the woods with a leaf blowers happy ever after.. You really brought the story to life, I was holding my breath ; and elegant, sadistic Angela Carter, who was under my reading radar until today goes on don't read before bed list 😂
Let me just say, this story hits quite different when doing yard work in the fall! Also I feel like the sex could be changed from male to female and be just as relevant. As an American some stories are most effective with a British accent :)
the erl king got that cryptid rizz fr
“The say the owl was a baker’s daughter” is a line said by Ophelia in Hamlet.
It’s from the Bible originally I think or it’s a story about Jesus turning the bakers daughter into an owl because she gave him not a lot of breas
The hair ropes thing is a reference to another poem as well I just don’t remember what it’s called!
Wow. Keep going with this channel. It’s special.
Aww thank you, we shall ❤️ - Rosie
Somehow imagining that each of the birds was once a woman was super disturbing. I should’ve seen where this was going but I dudnt
