In 1892, Lizzie Borden was arrested for caving in the skulls of her father and step-mother. All the evidence seemed to point to Lizzie as the murder. But, after a lengthy trial, she was ultimately acquitted - and amazingly, her acquittal had a lot to do with the fact that she had been menstruating at the time of her parents’ grizzly deaths. But how?
How did shedding her womb lining get Lizzie Borden off for murder? How does her case, her notoriety as a murderer, a female murderer no less and (perhaps even more controversially) as a menstruating spinster, capture our imaginations? And, how does English writer, Angela Carter, take Borden’s life, her inner and outer turmoil, and turn it into a stomach-churning, utterly crushing and suffocating expose of that which sets the patriarchy a-trembling: female rage.
