- We had to flip our Piper PA-28 235 on its side to access some of the belly that was damaged. We hooked it to our hangar crane and slowly rotated it to reveal the damaged area. Joe and Greg started the removal process of the damaged area while Jason and Harrison went out to Raystown Lake to check on the camp. Jason decided to put the camp up for sale since he hasn't had much time to visit it with all of the projects we have going on.

As a former team member for a NASCAR Late Model team, I would have loved to have one of those rivet removal attachments for the drill... could have saved hundreds of hours! Love the rescues... keep 'em coming! IRAN vs rebuild... I think it comes down to what you want to provide for your customer. There is obviously added value in the rebuild. Thanks for the update on the 5th wheel. Hello to Jason, Joe, and the whole gang. Great work!
Another great episode of plan rescuing! We would like to show part of your videos in a video report about your channel. We will add your link, your name, and your work will be mentioned in the video. Please let us know what you think and keep it up!
If $10k gives you an extra 1000hrs it's a no-brainer for any potential buyer. As far as a seller, it also give you more profit since engine time is the biggest difference between plane costs. I don't think this is much of an arguement.
With that JB weld business, I'd vote for the overhaul
I like to see Joe open the show more often
Great video Jason, Joe, Greg, and Harrison! This is going to be a nice little airplane when you get it done. The camper looks AMAZING! Good luck with the sale!
Shout out to the camera man, helping to create the story on the microphone. Not only is speaking on camera hard for anyone, its not easy to stand behind a camera and help create a storyline on the fly.
Go for the full overhaul, then there is peace of mind and the new owner has confidence that the engine will last and be trouble free.
I am voting for the full rebuild
@Rebuild Rescue no worries Jason, we know you meant to say Piper. Hey, another great episode.
WOW your camper trailer looks amazing now good job !!!
I used to do security at Raystown a long time ago! Their country store was my friend's (great?) great-grandparents home. I can't wait to go back and do some camping again!
Nice video Jason I hope your surgery goes well and you can get back on your feet soon
Nice work guys, build it right build it safe! Love your passion for aviation. Rebuild rescue rocks! 🤠
You guys have the right ideas and are doing thing correctly. Yes, things do have costs, but it will be a lot easier to sell the plane when it is finished. You can say that the plane was taken to its elements, things were correctly fixed, and new parts were used. Like new is better than jerry-rigged. Keep up the good work!
No 401 in this video
Hey guys, been away for awhile - had knee replaced!! Have matching pair now!! Good to be back and see ya all!! Jason, NICE frackin' job on the RV... What about some wounded vets using in the future to relax with their families?? Don't know if doable... Just a thought!!
Great way to end my shift here at AK airlines in Anchorage, Alaska.
Night shift over, getting home and can relax seeing what y’all are doing!!
Love the videos and what y’all are doing. Would love to be able to eventually plan to help yall out if ever possible eventually.
Jason I wish you guys would send the rams out for the gear to get resealed shame to have a seal blow out and the gear wont come down and have to do a belly landing . You got it tore down now is the time to do it. I wonder if the seals have ever been replaced? Love the build you guys are doing a fantastic job
Replacing at OEM seams is always the best repair plan. Good job, Going to be a nice plane. Not sure I would go the full overhaul route.
That camper looks magnificent! Great for a couple or single person as a transitional house.
When you said 'remove the floor skin' I did a double take. I thought you said something else. Well it was nearly 1am and I was tired, but wanted to watch the end of the video as I'm playing catch up. Love that rivet removal tool, wish they'd been available a few years back.
With all due respect to Jason, I think he needs to be more careful with his pre purchase evaluations. Also, I think that he has far too many irons in the fire and is spread too thin. I would love to see him and his crew focus solely on the 401 until it is finished and flying.
Hey Joe, that rivet drill is a time saver - no doubt!!! Nice tool
With all the work you are doing already, I think a zero hour motor would be more appealing to a buyer. The sale price will be a little higher, but in the long run, it is a more cost effective option for the new owner.
Jason, I think the Iran option is best in this case in spite of the JB weld because they’re going to replaced as you mentioned all the gasket seals bearings so and so forth! And for the cost offset, and with all the other repairs being done, the Iran is more than sufficient.
I'm scared to watch, but I'm definitely gonna watch as soon as I get home!
After seeing how that engine had JB weld on it, maybe it is worth spending the money to just do a complete overhaul on it.
As a pilot, it’s nice to see the structure and watch the repair. Makes me a little more confident in the aircraft’s airworthiness. Thanks.
Damn this place is unbelievable!
Full overhaul of the engine.
The RV would make a very nice tiny home!!
You’re right, but it depends on where you put it because even some areas when you have vacant land they’re not permitted so you have to be mindful of that.
Have the shop do a basic inspection prior to doing anything. Have them figure out what’s behind the JB weld and if it’s a major issue. If the crank and compression are fine do the iran to it. 1000 hours is still a ton of flight time. This also saves you money which also allows you to sell at a lower price.
Y'all should make a wind chime out of the old motor mount bits!
If it was me and only me I'd do a overhaul to make sure it 100% and correct and ready to go
Thanks for another great video. You guys always accomplish the impossible, but I can’t wait to see you install the Cessna panels on the Piper 235. 🤣
What about the yacht? We were excited about that project too
Fantastic and you lucked out👍👍
I am pleased to hear that no major structural damage is evident or even present ! Also pleased to see that you and the crew take pains to inspect everything meticulously for the safest as well as the most airworthy repairs as possible!!
This was a very good show. Thank you for the video and the tutorials.
Man it’s so sad people can’t comprehend having more the one project. I have found this channel recently and I am watching these videos nonstop. Keep up the good work! Don’t let these Karens win
I was in a car mechanics course, and had one guy replace the gasket, then the following week noticed the sump leaking so using what would be JB Weld equivilent here in the UK to try stopping the leak never worked as could never find the pin prick so ended up just smothering the entire engine in JB Weld, would have been a real headache when he decided to fix the problem, not to mention the amount of money spent on buying enough JB Weld to try stopping the leak. far cheaper and easier to get it done the right way first time.
Go for a full overhaul on the engine. The cost to pull it again, and the time is better spent now. You are fixing and updating the airframe, and avionics, don't short on the engine.
Love those pancakes. We have a place here called Bob's Cafe who has plate sized buttermilk pancakes as well. Great progress again. I really wish I lived closer so I could help. See you next episode.
I wish you were closer to my neck of the woods! I would go with the full overhaul! No question.
Keep on keepin on ! Be well guys :)
Overhaul is the only way to go. Value increases dramatically.
Fresh overhaul! You’ll make more once you sell the aircraft
You’re always about doing it the right way so I would do the complete overhaul. Plus it will make it more desirable.
I think if you are looking to move this plane more quickly, then go with the IRAN but I think more people will be interested in a complete overhaul, in the long run that would be more cost effective for the person looking to buy. Lots of added value in an overhaul, like what a few people have said already. I just saw the oil thing because of the engine leak, for sure do the overhaul.
Thingymaboppers are vital tools for any mechanic.
For 10 grand more probably a complete overhaul would be the right choice. You can up the sell price a bit but sell something really reliable.
The value of the plane should go up significantly with a zero-time overhaul. I'm sure you could cover that cost easily.
If you're going to the trouble of fitting a glass cockpit I would go for a full overhaul of the engine and then aim for a higher resale value on a much more saleable aircraft.
From Altoona so go to Raystown quite often
Great videos guys. Can’t wait to see how this channel goes. Hope to see the 401 eventually. And want to see you at osh kosh
Another nice video✈️
Overhaul. Cheap insurance. PEACE OF MIND. Prop strikes are soooo sketchy that I'd just go for it and do a complete overhaul, Jason.
I suggest the overhaul. It's a little more money for a lot more reassurance and time. Better for resale as well!
What about the boat let's not forget it
I think the jb welded seal says an overhaul is needed. If maintenance has been that bad its not worth taking a chance.
For an extra $12K do a fresh engine. It will bring the value of the airplane up and personally, I'd be more inclined to buy something with a fresh engine vs a refresh.
Greg is like a wet rag 😂 tell him to lighten up, love your channel mate keep going on that 401 I’ve watched every single episode.
Wheres the update on the free boat!!??!!??!!
Another great show.... I lived, fulltime, in 5thwheels for many years, several high end models and you guys have made that one look great! Great job on the front of that 235.... I say go with the full, new engine overhaul.... for some wanting to buy that much airplane knowing you can fly it that much longer will be worth it.
Thanks again for sharing.
Bob
Most of the oil was crank case breather tube directly on the other side of the firewall from the oil soaked insulation
At that price point, I'd do the complete overhaul on the engine.
I agree I would do the overhaul. It would also ensure the most enjoyment and usefulness to the new owner so they can share the beauty of these planes with others
i grew up on Lake Wilhelm in western PA and miss it sometimes. but when it's cold i deal with a ton of pain on my amputated leg and sometimes it takes me off my only foot for a couple days
Fresh Overhaul greatly reduces liability and increases value + easer to sell.
Back when I was much younger, a "friend's"
father-in-law cond me into helping him with an airplane that did a belly flop and guess who got the job of drilling the million rivet's with a 1/8 inch drill while laying on the floor with the thing on Jack stands.
I think the answer depends on the "keep it or sell it" question. If you know you are keeping it, what would you want to do?
if you can sell it faster for less money and it there is still a good bit of fly time on it might be a good way to get a person into flying the plane that might not for the extra money up front. For you it is a matter of making x amount of profit to keep things moving. It is not cheaping out the buyer will know he has so many hours until a full overhaul is needed.
All you had to do was drill out the 2 forward center hat sections, cut the damage skin out & section in a new piece of 2024 T3 skin over the original. Drill & rivet to the original holes. Replacing the whole skin still requires a 337 form. You cannot tell the difference on both repairs. Our firewall had to be replaced, we found a NOS firewall that was cheap. Use steel rivets on the firewall like Piper did.
Complete overhaul of the engine I would say, also a better sales argument, and sinds you almost overhaul the body, I would go the full way…
Considering the oil leak, crate engine is worth the money.
LOL Tall men and a/c interiors don't mix. I'm 6' and used to work on EA-6Bs in the Navy. Under dash work was fun.
Im 6'5" and worked on S-3B's.. underseat and under panel work SUCKED....
Hello
The smash and crash bandit is back and doing his stuff. Nice to see the RV going to be sold to raise some funds for more aircraft crack on
Will you Dry ice these areas it is awesome to See how is it works Again.
Y’all should make a video where you sit around for 30 mins waiting for parts for the 401 and maybe that would make the haters happy!
It’s not 401 Rescue!
It’s Rebuild Rescue!
Not sure why so many people get so upset that Y’all work on other things. Great video as always!
Maybe check what your options are for a low time engine replacement instead of rebuild for the 235?
My dad always said if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, only a thousand hours I would only do what’s necessary!
Overhaul
Dang Jason - NIX idea I had on RV - did not realize it was on your home property!! Disregard last transmission
Jason how much did you guys put into the RV repairs?. Never said anything about that with estimates. Looks good
Hello!
From Lycoming, "All Lycoming Engines have a recommended calendar overhaul of 12 years regardless of the time on the engine." IMHO, if it is going to be completely disassembled anyway, why not overhaul? There should be very little difference in the labor costs.
I would overhaul.
Go with the IRAN and sell for 10k under so you can offload it quick for your next project with some profit and keep another plane in the air
Listen to your A&P
I see that you guys are going in a different direction other than airplanes now lol..
What's up with the 410 ???
Go for zero time motor and sell higher. IRAN is more if you are doing a quick flip.
Is there any difference between TBO with the two different engine repairs?
If so, maybe consider that as a deciding factor?
Overhaul for sure.
I'd spend the money, do the overhaul and take the extra weeks to make sure the airframe, the avionics and every system you can work on without an engine is completely rebuilt/repaired/ready for the engine to go in. There's nothing like having extra time because NO project like this is going to finish in the time allotted. It will alwayys tax (x) more days than expected.
RV visit, check. How about the yacht?
Please tell me the name / link to that center drill attachment to drill out rivets!?
Rivet removal tool 1341a
What's up with the free Yacht?
I would do an overhaul, youre already trying to salvage something, I think you make the overhaul money back and give someone a fresh start reliability wise.
Based on what Jason said I would go with the cheaper action on the engine - IRAN?? Appears they accomplish same??
zero time complete rebuild on the motor - better safe
