    Thanks for your thoughts on the Pi 5. I've now had a chance to watch a few hands on reviews. Even with your caveats I've took the plunge and ordered one. I still think of all the competitors out there the Pi has a lot of support which will help me overcome any issues I have which other boards just can't match. I have the Zero for any stuff I maybe used my Pi 1 and 2 for as for a desktop experience they were a nightmare but for headerless stuff worked well as does the Zero. Perhaps they are looking at that education price factor to be filled by the Zero 2. Just a thought. Cheers

      No worries, like u I have ordered one so we’ll have a play on the channel. You make a valid point about RPi support which is very good, I do agree. The clones have worked very well of late but I do know what u mean, if they didn’t would the support be there?

    You have to wonder what sort of dual screen workstation market they are aiming at when originally it was meant for GPIO and Scratch at a low cost?

      @WiFiSheep  Рік тому +1

      So i think it was originally for a call centre work station contract which needed the duel screens , hence why pi 4 looked the way it did. I honestly have never used a Pi in dual mode or know anyone else that has.... yes one or two people will have set it up like this, and they will come out the wood work and comment :-)
      I think we're a long way from GPIO and Scratch at this point .... Pi 5 is industrial, high end education and people like us that'll buy them anyway ;-)

    The speed bump is welcome, I am worried about the Poe power draw. I also think the hdmi connectors are still a bad choice but don’t know what else would fit. 2.5gbe networking would have been good.
    I run 8 pi 4’s via pxe boot from a Synology with Poe hats as a bunch of Ubuntu servers

      A full size HDMI and a Mini? then at least if you don't have your adaptor your not totally screwed! And it still dose the dual thing ... Apple used to do this with DVI dual support.
      Now you see your 'use case' for Pi is very interesting, so for you Pi5 will have some use, if you can justify the cost of upgrading?

      @@WiFiSheep Ditch the adapters, a micro hdmi - hdmi cord, works better for longer, and you need a cord anyway with the adapter. Boombox form factor worked for me. Take out the cd player and you've got all the room you need for accessories on the go, with one handle, no back pack. Mount the Pi4 on the back so you can reach all the ports and for cooling. Mount a 7" touchscreen on top using the CD player door and some creativity. Laser trackball works mounted. I use Logitech for 1 dongle for mouse and keyboard. Power tool batteries to run the PI4 and boombox for audio. Best form factor ever. Android 13 will dual screen same image with 2 HDMI, not if you're using the DSi though. Twister OS you can choose whether it's the same or a second desktop. I felt the need to replace the CD player with something... so I mounted a laptop DVD burner underneath with some MDF. It's pretty stealth I have to point it out. Sharpied the edge of the MDF black and used black RTV sealant from the auto parts store to glue the works to the bottom. Anyway... that's what makes Pis and PI4s great.

    I think your taking things far too seriously, also forced over to usb-c? silly comment, I think you've done this coming from a negative position, its just a board - smile :-)

    I'm getting a Pi5 as soon as I can. See what it can do overclocked.

    Wow ! Tom, all valid points, RPF are constrained designing a new board, when keeping to the previous form factor, if they sway too far, they get enormous backlash, but when they keep swapping back and forth, one method to another, it breaks with backward compatibility, which is a shame, they almost need a dedicated maker board, where backward compatiability with PSU / case / connectors is maintained, I'd admit to having a plethora of RP products over the years, that you can not just pickup at a weekend to have a play, without spending your whole time looking for the correct PSU / HDMI connector etc, this has put me off a few times, and as you sugest the price, going up, it gets expensive to have these boards sitting around in a draw, doing not much. Anyway thanks for the vid, by the way I have original Pi B / Pi2B / Pi3B /Pi3A, not Pi4, and probabily no Pi 5, due to these factors.

    Well, I’m excited to get one.. it’s not just the speed boost, new connectivity, it’s the pi foundation, and the fact that it’s supporting local tech capability and community. I’m glad to say I’m feeling positive about it and can’t wait. The banana pi, orange pi, etc.. they should not be rewarded with sales for something they’ve shamelessly copied.

    • @dna9838
      @dna9838 Рік тому

      @Annoye yes. Clearly intended to steal market share by basing their product on it (the clue's in the name) , but without making the effort or expense that the R-Pi foundation made to creating them in the first place or dedication to education and community.

    Times have changed since the Pi was first introduced. People want faster and more powerful SBCs ,the Pi 4 was falling behind the more expensive boards with the RK3588 and now it has caught up. However x86 PCs are a lot cheaper these days I have ordered a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB, a case, a card with the OS and a power supply and including shipping it was 240NZ$. I recently bought a PC with 16GB ram a Celeron N100 processor with a 512GB drive with windows 11 pro for 265NZ$. When the pi arrived it was a cheap alternative, not so these days. However for the maker there is the very capable Raspberry Pi Zero2W that is available for less than 40 NZ$. I still think that the Pi 5 looks like a good prospect and has morphed into what people want.

    Lots of healthy scepticism in this assessment. We simply don't know what people will do with this board. Industry will probably stick with the tried and true pi4 and adoption of the 5 will take time. Even over a pandemic and chip shortage the pi4 sold 14 million units. I think they'll be thrilled if they can match that

    Please try and stay positive. This is a board with a fantastically broad appeal. The fact that this is not your perfect product is hardly surprising.

    Regarding the increased cost - bare in mind the double digit inflation - and yet being a UK product it's not priced like Dollar commodities where an $60 item costs £70 (instead of £50) - glad you have still gone ahead with your order but hope you don't regret plumbing for the 4Gig option rather than 8Gig. I bought an early Pi - and also now prefer the Pi 400. Likely I won't order the Pi5 - but only because I'm hoping a Pi 500 will follow along within a year. And one more point about cost - my recent purchase of a Windows Mini NUC PC cost 10x the price! NOTE: Had the BBC B, Acorn 3000, Acorn RISC PC Strongarm plus (second-hand)Acorn A4 Laptop! I was even going to by a Phoebe :-)

    Might hold off for now. I'll get one I'm sure at some stage. More compute is nice for desktop but like others here in the comments, for projects it's not really an issue. I guess NVME storage might be nice in some desktop scenarios or for emulation but I'm one of those original retro hardware people. TBH I'm happy with my Pi 4 for now. Zero's will do the rest. +1 Sub will tune in to see how you get on with it.

    It isn’t really aimed at the average maker (my opinion)! I’d say more the ‘elite maker’ community or retro gamers trying to push their limits! If I was needing this amount of power I’d probably be going for a windows pc! Having said all that I’ll probably get one at some point but it would be a pure indulgence as I don’t really need one which probably means I’m just another gullible geek!

      Erm... probably all of above to be honest. I have tried to be balanced and justify answers after what happened with Pi4. Its the lack of eMMC, I was really hoping Pi5 was going to be a little bit more than this. The features are nice, I talked about that, i'm not overly excited by the expansion options... but thats my used case ... many people will differ to me and if your strapping half a ton of SATA drives to your Pi then yeah I could see how useful Pi 5 could be....
      Pi 2 - Pi A3+ Zero, Zero2 and 400 were all brilliant! PICO was interesting, these were exciting .... but Pi4 and now 5 just don't sit right ....

    Its kind of like your favorite band that no longer sounds like they did. Its cool. I get that the new Pi5 should be more than this. But overall? The world has sort of moved on. All the cool projects and the dirt cheap nature of working with what you got are no longer main priorities.

      Thank You! Thats exactly the point I was trying to put across! Which took me a whole video and you one sentence! What doesn't help is im currently doing a sponsored review of a x86 64bit SBC product which I think is way more interesting, in the same price point as the Pi5, but more RAM eMMC more connectivity and mine booted into PC Windows 10 out of the box! ... Hence why i'm having Pi5 issues right now.
