Thank you once again for an excellent demonstration of how a grade five piece should sound. I have just started working on this piece and love it, such beautiful chords and for some reason it puts me in mind of Gershwin just a tiny bit.
Evelien Vis is a music teacher in Belgium, born 1956, educated at Royal Conservatoire The Hague. The piece comes from her collection, Swinging Rhythms.
+Sean Bird I agree, more important is making sure the rests are present where marked, e.g. the 1st and 5th bars after the double bar line in the middle. Great interpretation in this video.
@@EMusicMaestroUK Thanks for your comment. If you ever have time to make it into a whole piano piece, i'll be recommended! Or maybe you have some pianomusic similar, that looks like it, so powerful and advanced..? 💥 Good luck with your nice compositions!👌
Do you have to play other notes such as the triplet and the quarters with the swing rhythm or does it only applies to the 8th note ? Also at 0:46 between E and F# do you have to make it swing as well ?
My exams tomorrow and I'm playing this piece. Is this tempo your playing a good tempo to play at as at the moment I can play completely in time with this video will that be ok?
Singer4Life - A lightly detached touch is quite stylish in jazz music but the are many ways of interpreting a piece and a more legato performance would be acceptable too, if this appeals to you, as long as it doesn't sound Romantic in style. The main thing is to make it sound jazzy by the slight emphasis on the 'back' beats (the shorter note in swing patterns). Hi i am preparing the song for exam next week. I have a question: do i need to swing when the beat is not two quavers? Like the right hand in bar 17 and 23?
Ruta Niun Hi Ruta. I can't answer for other examiners nor on behalf of ABRSM but my personal feeling would be that you need to play at a tempo that characterises the style and and the bright mood. If it works for you at a slightly faster pace and you keep it under control without it sounding too rushed this would be ok. You do need to bear in mind that the composer gave the tempo marking of minim = 66 (as opposed to it being an editorial marking) so this is the tempo she had in mind.
E-MusicMaestro my exam is coming up, im doing this song! are there any more tips that you could give me, this video has been extremely useful!thank you for the video!
+Vena Handojo Hi Vena. The sheet music is in the current ABRSM Grade 5 Selected Piano Exam Pieces book. I'm sorry I can't let you have a copy but the piece is in copyright so it would be illegal for me to send it to you.
No, it's broadly jazz style and specifically swing style. Classical music, strictly speaking, was composed between 1750 to around 1825 but the term 'classical' is sometimes used broadly to describe any music that is not 'pop' music.
This is a bit late, but isn't the introduction to the song (not the video) from another famous piece of music, and if so do you know what piece that is?
This is my favourite piece and that's saying something

+Steven Smith Thank you for your generous comments again Steven. Pleased you are enjoying playing this piece.

Thank you! Your preformance has been very helpful, as well as the tips. Dynamics enrich this beautiful piece!
+Discoteque77 Thank you for your kind comment.
I took my exam on 5th December. Got my results a few days ago 117 marks, yay! XD
+Zyclos nice :)
How did you do? :)
Ur an amazing pianist! I'm rubbish at this tune!
very good.i love this
Beautiful.
Thank you!
I'm actually doing this piece right now. Isn't parts of it meant to be legato?
Not really, I'm learning this too
+Sean Bird I agree, more important is making sure the rests are present where marked, e.g. the 1st and 5th bars after the double bar line in the middle. Great interpretation in this video.
+MusicOnline UK thanks for the tips!
Completely lost it at the intro
I love the intro of this video.
Is it part of a whole piano piece? If so, I do have students who would love to play it! 😃👍🏼
Thank you! It was actually just an improvisation that I recorded as an intro for this series of videos so I don't have it written down.

It's exactly as you hear it in this video, performed by professional pianist, Peter Noke.
My exams tomorrow and I'm playing this piece. Is this tempo your playing a good tempo to play at as at the moment I can play completely in time with this video will that be ok?
Carla Sheppard Yes it's a good tempo. Best of luck with your exam :)

Have you ever got a 30/30 in a piano piece in an exam?
+Earl Grey122 I have I was so happy
Earl Grey122 No, best I got was 29
Hi i am preparing the song for exam next week. I have a question: do i need to swing when the beat is not two quavers? Like the right hand in bar 17 and 23?
+默泉 Yes you should play swing style throughout, including bars 17 and 23. Good luck with your exam.
hi, i play this a bit faster but would i get marked down for playing it faster than it should be in my exam?

Best play piano ever
Well done - that's great news!
Were you talking to me?
I think so! :)
E-MusicMaestro my exam is coming up, im doing this song! are there any more tips that you could give me, this video has been extremely useful!thank you for the video!
hi! do you have this sheet music? would you mind to send me this sheet music?:) I would like to learn this song
+Vena Handojo Hi Vena. The sheet music is in the current ABRSM Grade 5 Selected Piano Exam Pieces book. I'm sorry I can't let you have a copy but the piece is in copyright so it would be illegal for me to send it to you.
Great song!!! You should really change the intro and outro tho (just saying) :D
Did u use the pedal? Are we supposed to? Cuz I never use it😣
Yes just light touches of pedal to enhance the tone. A lot of legato pedal would not be in keeping with the style of this piece.
what key is this song in?
Is 60's swing piece considered as classical piece and why?
No, it's broadly jazz style and specifically swing style. Classical music, strictly speaking, was composed between 1750 to around 1825 but the term 'classical' is sometimes used broadly to describe any music that is not 'pop' music.
lose the intro
+NORTHERN MUSICIAN You don't have to listen to it every time - just move the video on!
+E-MusicMaestro i do : )
I worked out that the intro lasts for 18secs so fast forward to 18secs in and you don't have to listen to the intro
+Kill_O_Tron 5000 sounds like you did some serious math to work that one out
This is a bit late, but isn't the introduction to the song (not the video) from another famous piece of music, and if so do you know what piece that is?
I made it up actually 😊
I meant the introduction to the song 60s swing
@@M5467y Ah yes. I think it sounds like several other songs because it's a very common chord sequence but I can't name one in particular.
Thanks for clarifying, I just realised I had noticed it before.
My 8year old sister is learning this song
This is jazz piece rite? Is thre a difference between jazz and swings?
Swing is a type of jazz but jazz is not necessarily played swing (e.g. Latin).
E-MusicMaestro ohhh thank u so much for this dear!!
i just got my results for grade 5 piano...and i got a 30/30 in this one...but i got 27 in the other two...
Apollo 19 nice, I'm taking my exam in March, as well as my grade 5 theory
It is quite hard for me in bb. 13.
Keep practising Charlene - you'll get there if you persevere! Good luck with your exam.
Who is the composer
Evelien Vis
thanks
are you using a pedal?
Dean De Block Yes, but in a subtle way that is appropriate to this style of music.
good
Thank you for your kind comment.
my swing rhythms are absolute crap
Intro..😬
Who tried dabbing to the intro of this channel 😂😂😂
Your playing it a bit too detached
+Emilia W For your personal preference, perhaps, Emilia.
+Emilia W Detached accentuates the syncopation - essential for swing.
