  • This rough was found right during our mining trip in May 2017. Video by Ruwanpura Gems.
Rough sapphires in various sizes and qualities come straight from the ground right in front of our eyes while shooting this video.
Ratnapura is one of the major active mining areas in Sri Lanka. It produces sapphire in many colors, ruby, spinel, tourmaline, alexandrite and other gemstones. Large-scale mechanized mining allows to excavate big pits and work through tons of soil. Large scale gemstone mining is a complex process with lots of machinery involved. Gem mining in Sri Lanka gets many people employed, they work hard day by day to make a living and develop strong muscles. Gem-quality rough is still very hard to produce. Most of rough undertakes some kind of treatment (geuda, heat, beryllium, etc) to result in market-quality sellable gemstones.

**Sapphires splendidly cover the colour spectrum from one end to the other. Though technically a chemically pure sapphire would be colourless, trace minerals inside the stones create the kaleidoscope of tones and saturations reflected. Because of this, each piece is unique in both colour and clarity. Fine quality sapphires are rarer than diamonds. And some are more sought after than others such as the famous blue Ceylon sapphire which has been coveted by royalty for centuries.**
