  • This is the other locomotive sent to me by Asia for her son Tim along with Hornby Class 37. An old Lima Class 40 in BR Green. This had a few bit and pieces missing and I wasn't able to source replacements. However, I did find a complete motorised chassis going cheap so.....

On a grey and windy weekday afternoon, around mid-summer 1975/76 (?) a small boy stood on the platform at Llandudno Junction. With a train due, he listened to and then watched as an elderly class 40 and a train of dirty MK1s pull into the station. On its way to Holyhead or maybe Llandudno itself, the loco came to a stand. Unnamed at the time, the loco was still in BR Green. It was battered and weathered and had clearly had a hard life! The small boy chanced his luck and asked the driver if he could stand in the cab, His luck held and he witnessed the awesomeness of 40106, an experience never to be forgotten. It was as filthy inside as it was outside but, by far the most fantastic thing I'd ever seen! (I think at the time it was the last 40 still wearing green) No one could be happier than I to know that this loco still survives today!. Really enjoyed your video, thanks for jogging the memory!.

It Grinds my Gears when I see on certain Sites or “Shops” on Flea-bay, that have obvs dismantled a Loco and sell it in pieces to achieve a higher price - The Exorbitant Sums that the Scalpers Charge for spare Parts is Criminal and they should be excluded, or at the very least Boycotted - I think that the older Lima Models in general, offer Superb VFM, and this one looks Majestic Pulling that Rake of Coaches, a real Workhorse. Nicely done Bill 👏🏻🙏🏻✨

Its the same with star wars toys etc.broken down and sold as spares for multiple of what the whole is worth but sadly sometimes there's no choice if a part is needed .iv been fleeced on bits for trains and my vintage toys

Sadly ebay themselves are to blame in someways because whenever a item is sold via a payment through ebay they take about 30% of the profit made on a item. So sellers will have to add that 30% extra onto the cost so that they can retain the profit for selling it. I have been stung a few times selling garden machinery on ebay and I now only request cash on collection or for the buyer to pay a separate invoice away from ebay.

Are you sure that is a tardis as I got one and it does not have a white roof unless it is somewhere else on the layout 😊

Hi Bill many years ago (about 30+)!!, when the real 40106 was based at the Nene Valley Railway, I was on a family visit walking around the yard shed area. One of the staff members spotted us watching the loco start up and asked if we would like a cab ride onto to turntable, daft question to my then 4 year old daughter! she was heading to the loco before I said yes. we had a very slow speed trip onto the turntable spun-round and headed back to the shed. The said daughter now volunteers on the the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway, I had worked on the Colne Valley Railway from 1979-2019. I now live on a narrowboat in Derbyshire. So with the return of model 40106 a happy memory you have helped to recall. 🙂

First scene: forlorn looking broken toy.
Final scene: decent looking and well performing model loco.
    Excellent repair & video.
Loved the shots of the branch line in action.

Looks good and an excellent runner for such an old loco. When you get a sweet running Lima diesel they are a pleasure to use, robust and easy to work on and a bargain compared to today's offerings. A shame Lima did not release more 40s back in the day and a mystery to me why no other manufacturer (other than Jouef) produced one in the '70s/'80s.

Atlantic Conveyor. The merchant ship requisitioned by the Royal Navy in the Falklands war to ferry helicopters to the islands. Sadly sunk by Argentinian missiles with the helicipters too, and the loss of 12 sailors. Another lovely video.

The westie shouldn’t be on the side! But It was named Atlantic conveyor by Gerald Boden in honour of the ship that was sunk during the Falklands conflict. I knew him, and his son Neil, when the loco was based locally at the Nene Valley and i was lucky to have a can ride in her, and she was the only 40 NEVER to have been repainted BR blue, she stayed green her entire working life and through preservation.

I remember seeing 40106 at Birmingham New Street station some 45 years ago give or take a year. It was painted in green and was very clean if I recall correctly and was not named but I could be wrong (usually am). This was the era when almost everything was in BR blue but for some reason 40106 was painted in green with the old BR symbol. I guess I remember the number as this one was the odd one out. I didn't realise that there was a model of this locomotive with the later number on it.

Hah, one I've got. Though mine is 40126 with Split Headcode Boxes. Lima only made mine for one year, 1989, because it's the one that was involved in the Great Train Robbery back when it was D326! Got it from Hattons for a steal since they thought the body didn't fit. Turns out they were putting it on the wrong way.
I retrofitted a DCC socket, a socket bypass switch (didn't have blanks at the time), and a LocPilot 5 DCC decoder to it to experiment with DCC. The decoder cost more than the loco did! The Auto-Calibration managed to get exceptional crawling performance out of the factory G-Motor. You'd swear it had been refitted with a Can motor or was newer than it was if it wasn't quite so loud. Though it flat out *refuses* to run on DC with the decoder installed, either on my Kato SX controllers or my Uncle's Gaugemaster one. Never figured out why.
The missing window glass on this one is a massive piece, and sits low enough to need a hole to fit the motor. It also stops you putting the body on backwards, which utterly flummoxed Hattons when they had mine back in 2021. It's likely also why the weight is missing, the glass has a built-in spring that presses down on the weight to stop it moving. Someone presumably removed to prevent damage.

Hi Bill ,, I got a couple of mainline 40 class locos a year or so ago and they were described as good runners but when i got them i put one on my test test tracks and it did have some life but it barely moved so I thought oh well ill give it a good clean and service and it should be a good runner. So I pulled it down cleaned it all up and had a terrible click noise in 2 of the drive axles & turned out the drive cogs had split. I got the little pancake motor going ok but it is soo small that it struggle to go around the track and struggles to pull 1 carriage. So looks like it will get a cd drive conversion.
The second one i put on the test track and like in your words mate , "not a sausage" but really was only the skin of the sausage but with not a single bit of meat in it ,, ie , it didn't even the motor in it.
So I contacted the seller about these issues with videos and pics of no motor and poor runner on the 1 that did have some life in it and she responded with oh well im only going by what i was told by the guy she got them from. Funny part that wasnt part of the description. I said yes thats fine but when you are selling items for $$$ and also sight unseen with little to no buyer protection you have to check these things out before you post them online. So to me what the reality of the purchase is a massive difference to what i received so I have paid $140 aus/d for the 2 locos in good faith that these were "good runners" and so now im stuck 2 really expensive static models which i can get for around $40. So i said look if you can refund me say $50 and i keep the locos and have to sorse the parts to fix them I'll be happy with that. She agreed to refund me $50 so she was somewhat honest..
Fast forwards to now where i got a few here and there i might be able to make a few good 1's out of the 8 i have now.
Mainline are really good detail but soo many gears to turn and soo low on power.
    Cheers from john in Australia

Hi John I've never seen a Mainline Class 40 ? Maybe you mean Class 45. There are plenty of those about and they have the same wheel arrangement as a Class 40. 👍🏻😎

    • @johngibson4641
      @johngibson4641 Місяць тому

@@anthonytaylor298 hmmm here im thinking that there are 40 classes and 45 classes ,, the mainlines ones i have have 16 wheels (or 8 axles) and near all of them bar 1 has broken secondary gears. I am new to the uk rail scene as in only in the last few years and its hard sometimes as iv seen these both as 40 classes and 45 classes. So now im just more confused haha ,, oh well there still cool to work on though and a bit more of a challenging than the lima and hornby trains. Thanks for your reply.
      Cheers from John in Australia.
