  • Is it OK to camp in big storms? What about high wind? Tornadoes? Should I cancel my trip if there's bad weather coming? What do I do when the storms come? Let's have a chat about storms while camping. Whether you are in a tent, pop up camper, hybrid, or large RV, you need to be aware of storm safety. Secure your things and awning. Watch on the weather apps. If you are concerned for your safety, go to the bath house or storm shelter. Know when to make that judgement call.

    There is one more thing. Check the weather forecast for your destination ahead of time. I once went on a camping trip. I backed the trailer in. I set up, everything was perfect until it started raining. It rained the ENTIRE week, Sunday through Saturday, the pools were closed, beach was closed, boat rides were canceled, the ONLY thing to do for entertainment was to go to Lowe's. You can imagine how much fun I had. It rained, nonstop for my ENTIRE trip and that was no fun. I ended up having to pull stakes and leave. So, before you make a reservation, check the weather forecast for your destination. If you think the weather might cause trouble during the trip, it's best to either postpone the trip or destine elsewhere rather than risk a ruined trip.

    When we are done at the campfire I fold my chairs up and use a large trash bag and slide the chair in side of it. Then slid the chair between the bench and the table to protect them every night and if it rains they are protected from the weather. I also have a battery backup power in case we need power for lightsor a radio.

    Hello Rachel & Blake, thank you for sharing strategies tips and tricks to stay safe amid bad weather conditions. Especially recommendations for newbies like me. When in a panic, common sense goes out the window. Lol. I appreciate your informative videos especially the one on BAL. Love your genuine approach to give us advice so we could have enjoyable adventures in pop-up camping. Thankfully, the mighty hand of Jesus is with you. He held up your pop up when the camper blew a year ago.
    My family and I started pop-up camping in 2021 amid the pandemic. Got a family of five with three young kiddos and wanted to get out and give our girls a great experience with the outdoors. So we did a lot of research and watched tons of videos. Found yours and it’s popping to be tops in genuine support for new and seasoned campers alike. I am in southern California. This my bad weather story (many of you who live in the eastern and mid United States will chuckle!). First issue with weather happen to be on our first trip maiden voyage that was a double stop. First at Malibu Creek Canyon then El Capitan -got the sites due to cancellations. At the first site although we’re in California weather was high 40s and we were not prepared for the cold weather. We thought hey, we’re in California so we took mostly shorts and light clothing. Next day drove miles to a thrift store and loaded up on warm clothing. And bought a jack at a Home Depot and jackstands at an auto store. Had been supporting one side of the camper with two by fours. What a baptism by fire. Lol.
    On an aside not sure if I missed this in your comments. Would you happen to know what happened to the couple with? It’s Poppin? They have not posted in five months. Perhaps you could reach out on the side just to say hello and they are missed. Please let them know that I am sending good thoughts and prayers their way. Thank you, Jerry.

    We have only been in one severe storm in all our years of camping. High winds, driving rain, and lightning that was so intense you could read a news paper. This storm lasted all of 5 or 6 hours. We were in our 2001 Camplite Popup, scared the bejeebers out of us. Sat in the pickup through the storm. We prayed, and were delivered. There was no damage to our unit, vehicle, nor any of our outside equipment. However I did see the bucket that held the water hose, and filters go sailing by about 5 feet off the ground moving from right to left, it was empty of course. I do agree, know your equipment, and it's limitations. We used to call that, "COMMON SENSE ". Do not see that a lot today. We Love your vids, keep them coming. Be safe, enjoy the camp, and may God Bless you, and yours. See you on the trail.

    Thanks for the information. Getting ready for Burning Man and the winds can be 70+ so thanks for the tips. Not sure if venting some air is possible though since there's lots of dust out there.

    Great tips, since you have to book campgrounds months in advance there's no knowing what the weather will be. We have been in several rain storms and listened to small tree branches falling on the roof all night.

    We've called a few trips short, even down to one night. (Most of ours are 2 nighters). Most of the ones were nearby, anyway, so easy enough to pack up, and get home. Watching weather, knowing it's going to rain that evening, all night, and the next morning till just before checkout time at KOA 35 miles from home, just a good place to get away Plus, we had our senior basset with us who gets very nervous in storms, so we packed up, and came on home. We just don't have a great spot to open up all the way to dry out at home. We did get a heavy downpour at Lake Shelbyville, IL, but at least that had a whole day to dry the canvas. One daughter was in a tent!

    So I wouldn't do any of those things. Maybe last resort but there are much better ways to ride out the weather. I have a 2005 viking that I by unforseen situations ended up living. Over time being a contractor that moves around found I should of done this long time ago. I've managed gale force winds of 99 mph and -5 degree weather all with comfort and no worries with 2 east not very expensive modifications. It's been 2 yrs now and the thing is still in great shape having survived its second northern California storm of 80 mph winds. You definitely don't want to vent do to mold and a few other tricks stop the mold. The modifications made I can tell you one the other is pending patent. So -5 degree weather you will have to wait. But for high winds a loop installed on all 4 corners with husky straps with eye hole 12in bolts pounded in the ground. No shaking no zip down of windows in the rain.

    Possibly, during a storm or threat of severe weather could it be adventitious to remain attached to your tow vehicle for additional security until the all clear? At least you could make a quick getaway if needed. I enjoy your adventures and posts. Peace, Kenny

    • @AdventuresinPopUps
      @AdventuresinPopUps  Рік тому

      It sounds like it could be beneficial, but most likely not feasible with leveling and such. It really needs to be put down to be in towing mode, but maybe in an emergency? Really I think pop-ups have the advantage of opening more windows to let air through. There's less drag than a standard camper.

    Ok, so what constitutes a heavy pop up vs a light pop up. I think our pop up is around 2800lbs. We’ll be driving through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan on out trip this summer. We had a brake controller and a 7 pin tow cord hooked up, so we’ve got everything as ready as I can think to make it. I want to try to take it out for a few test runs before August and see what we can learn. I want to go and visit a friend at Michigan State University and I’d love any suggestions for places to camp while I’m out there, maybe close to the lakes or something, since we don’t have “Great Lakes” here in California.

    • @AdventuresinPopUps
      @AdventuresinPopUps  Рік тому

      Lighter units are 800-1,000 lbs. 3,000 is about as heavy as pop-ups come

      Are you on the Pop-up camper group on FB? They are a great resource for campground recommendations and much more. We haven't camped in MI yet! We like to look up State parks. They tend to be more affordable and larger sites.

    What is the difference between buying one of these and sleeping in a tent question it campers and I am looking into buying 1 but my husband is against me because he thinks it's just a glorified tent why pay so much money for a big tent? I'm just curious what your thoughts are on this if you can give me the advantage of buying a camper over a tent

    • @AdventuresinPopUps
      @AdventuresinPopUps  8 місяців тому

      There are TONS of benefits! No more sleeping on the ground, all the creature comforts you want (heat, cooking, a/c) all built in, you can leave your stuff in the camper (less packing), while still preserving the tent feel!
