The Folding knife is in my top 10 of all time! Everytime you talk about KJ Parker i get the urge to read another lol. I need to fit in The Company soon.
Allenxandria with triumph in the Booktube Wars by picking the enemy off at range with our archers. It will be just like the battle of Agincourt, if both sides were a bunch of nerds.
I read The Folding Knife recently, which I enjoyed a lot. I’ve also read two novellas: Prosper’s Demon and Pulling the Wings Off Angels. Thanks for recommending K. J. Parker.
Thanks for the guide :) I´ve been meaning the read Parker since I binged your videos when I was sick a year ago. I got a couple of them as ebooks, but only managed to read a novella (The Last Witness - which was magnificently dark) so far. Now I am determined to start with The Folding Knife soon.
I love the twinkle in your eye when you mention all the stuff in his books like arrow making that over 90% who read it will despise it haha (I'm in the 10%, btw...😁)
Hahhahahahahaha most people will hate it. He doesn't always get me...like in Colours in the Steel he goes way too in depth in catapult making and I hated it lol
Basso IS fascinating but Engineer trilogy gave me some of the most memorable characters of the past few years. I think about at least three of those characters regularly throughout the last year
That's pretty interesting. I wasn't expecting the Vesani to appear again, after reading Purple and Black. Also, great video, I'm definitely more interested in these books than I previously was. My first quarter is already kinda crowded, so I don't know if I'll be able to get to any of these soon (and definitely not until March, at least), but I'll definitely try to read at least one of the standalones this year. Which one will depend on what I'm in the mood for, but The Folding Knife does have the edge (pun intended) so far, because of your comment on how smart the main character is
@@MultiWar22 main character is brilliant! And Parker reuses a ton of locations...I've been making a spreadsheet of them to compare and it's been daunting!
I got introduced to Parker through your channel, the only stand-alone I've read so far is The Company and it was great, I've read one trilogy and a few of his shorter works too. I plan on reading The Folding Knife soon. Thanks for introducing me to another great author.
Its official, The Folding Knife will be my first Parker. The Company will be my second because I'm morbidly curious. Btw, I was looking for copies of these books (secondhand) while watching this video and Dear Lord I'm gonna have to settle for Amazon because I can barely find them anywhere else.
@ I’m not, brutal holidays for my family this year, so had to set it aside for a while, should finish Colours in the Steel this weekend, I’m hoping I can catch up for your Proof House discussion.🤞
I ordered 'The Hammer' because Allen was selling it so very well "Slow... depressing... sad..." OK OK Allen quit hyping it up so much! Seriously I ordered it, gonna try to do one Parker a month in 2025, thank you for this video Allen it was useful to me!
I literally had just bought Sharps on the kindle and 2 minutes later I saw your video. I do also own The Folding Knife so I'll follow your advice and start with that one.
I hope that Sharps is better than you remember - because I have a copy. 😅 It was the first Parker book I ever bought, and I bought it because it sounded like so much silly, swashbuckling fun. I clearly knew nothing about Parker at the time.
You know, sadly, there isn't anything specific to material trade or grain supply or anything like that. Several deal with trade in general, especially the Fencer series, which discusses dyes and carpets for a bit. Nothing like Shadow in Summer tho lol

Glad you liked it! I really like Prosper's, but not Angels quite as much. The sequel to Prosper, Inside Man, is good too!
Just discovered your channel a week ago and read Folding Knife - this book was totally what i was wanting and i have the Hammer queued next.
Oh that's awesome! Just be aware Hammer is much slower than FK but the end is worth it!

oh awesome! Last Witness is his novella after which I felt the most creeped out and bonechilled by. Really really dark, as you said.

Thank you for making this video specifically for me, to get my hyped for reading The Company in February.
yay!
I have every single one of these on the shelf ready to go and can’t wait to dig in!
Hope you enjoy at least some of them!
I feel like this is the year I'll try K.J Parker. I have the entire Engineer's trilogy, but Basso sounds so fascinating!

@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria Oooh, that's interesting to know! I'll keep an eye out for recurring locations, then!
@MultiWar22 yeah, Vesani, Aelia, the Mesoge, Permia, and Mezentia are really common places mentioned
Aha! A four part series!

yes, sadly, anything before the Siege trilogy is scarce. Savages ESPECIALLY is hard because it ONLY came out in Sub Press hardcover limited quantity
I did pick up The Folding Knife on Kindle for $1 over the holidays, I’ll read that after I finish The Fencer trilogy. Thanks for sharing!💚
yesssssss are you on Proof House with us?

That's an easy goal if you do novellas!
I've gotta get to The Company, The Folding Knife was very good even though banking is a bore...
hahahahhahah that IS the risk lol
I literally had just bought Sharps on the kindle and 2 minutes later I saw your video. I do also own The Folding Knife so I'll follow your advice and start with that one.
I'd start with FK but Sharps isn't BAD, it's just very different than FK and doesn't have the standout character in Basso
@TheLibraryofAllenxandria Thanks!
I guess Savages is my next read from him. I love the sound of that concept.
Oh heck yes....I think you'll really like Savages! A more full exploration of what he started in Colours in the Steel

It is sadly not silly. It's actually quasi-depressing lol

I'll discuss that when I talk trilogies! Big fan of Corax!
My question about Parker is do any of these books contain massive amounts of info about… (wait for it!) THE COTTON TRADE?????? 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

You would get a thumbs up just for the singing. I can't explain why, but that song goes through my head with far too much frequency.
