Building an Experimental Airplane, The Vans RV-7A | EP1.12 Building the Elevator Trim Tab

  • I build the trim tab of the elevator and attach it. The tab is detailed, and involves a lot of different production techniques. The usual deburring, priming, painting, riveting, etc. is there with the addition of some metal work bending the ends of the trim tab-much like the elevator portion. Wooden jigs had to be created for this, which helped hold everything down.
The electronic actuator-or servo-was brought back out and mounted to the brackets which were now primed and attached to the service plate.
By far, the most difficult part of the construction this time around is not actually completing and attaching the tab, but bending the leading edges of the elevator. This proved to be as frustrating as it was on the rudder and took hours if not days.
Needing a break, I flew to the coast and included some of the footage at the end of this video. I hope you stick around to see snippets of the flight to Tillamook, OR.

I'm Ryan, an aviation enthusiast who has decided to build his own aircraft and publish the entire thing online for others to watch along. The airplane is a two-person experimental kit built aluminum plane capable of over 200 miles per hour, and a range of nearly 700 miles. The kit is manufactured by Van's Aircraft, one of the most prolific kit providers on the planet. The airplane is aerobatic, functional, and fun. The build is challenging, time consuming, fun and rewarding.

I had wondered if were keeping your flying skills up while building. I built a plane back in the 80’s and wished I had. I am enjoying watching you build now.

I am. I don’t get up as often as I would like, but I get up.
I’m hopeful I’ll have the opportunity to work on my IFR rating soon. If not I’ll at least ensure I’m getting a few good cross countries in as often as possible.

Great video! Just subscribed to the channel. I'm building an 8 and just getting ready to bend the trim tab and elevator ends. Thanks for taking the time to share your progress on this step.

Thank you for the subscription and kind words!
I was pretty intimidated at that step-there’s no unbending and trying again. Best thing I found was to make sure you keep the gun moving!
      Thanks again!

Absolutely wonderful job on your build Ryan. Great videos! Love that you share the good, bad, and humbling challenges of building the 7. I'm building a 7 as well though took a couple years off. Just getting my shop set back up and planning to restart on the empennage in a few weeks. Your videos offer wonderful motivation!

These things are tough work, huh?!?
Thank you for the kind words, and for following along. Good luck on the restart!

Where did you find the "primer pistol"? PS Love the way you procrastinate!

I’ve linked it a few times, but it’s from Aircraft Tool Supply. They’re consistently out of stock, but if you can get your hands on one I recommend it.

Another great video! Tomorrow will be my turn to work on the left side of the elevator.

Why do you prefer the pneumatic drill over electric?

The biggest thing is that it is small and lightweight. It really reduces fatigue and allows you to easily get into areas that would be onerous with an electric.
The RPM offered is better suited to the task as well.

So, what did you do about the part of the leading edge that was still puckering?

I went back and used my hands, squeezing and pulling for a very long time. You can "massage" the aluminum into shape better than you can go back and try to tape a bar to it again.
It's not perfect, and if there was one section I could have a full do-over, it would be these leading edges-all of them really.
