Half notes should be kept the entire length. :) Imagine you have an orchestra behind you who's keeping your quarter notes in the background. You've got nowhere to go. :) So learn to be patient and better manage your bow. You might not need it when practicing, but you will definitely need it when playing together with another instrument. So learn it the right way from the beginning.
