Dark Phoenix: The End Of Fox's X-Men Franchise Was A Disaster

- The X-Men franchise ended with a whimper rather than a bang over at 20th Century Fox with Dark Phoenix. This big-budget X-Men movie was supposed to finally do justice to the Dark Phoenix saga, but instead was the final nail in the franchise's coffin. While the Fox X-Men franchise has been somewhat redeemed by Deadpool & Wolverine, in this episode of Awfully Good, our own Jesse Shade revisits the disastrous climax of a highly uneven franchise.

I thought it couldn't get worse than Apocalypse, but Dark Phoenix proved me wrong.
First class saga should've been ended after Days of Future Past
Days of Future's Past was great.
It should have ended at First Class, actually.
X-Men Days of Future Past is possibly the greatest superhero movie ever made. It's really hard to live up to that. I think apocalypse did a pretty good job of following up first class at least
@@LukeLovesRose
I think Days of Future Past may be my favorite X Men film. Deadpool and Wolverine is second.
@@alienboy1322 Right?
I think there are too many fans that want mindless action like we see in The Eternals set to the X-Men 97 theme. But what we see in the Fox X-Men films can hit so much deeper. It hits us on a more human level, especially when the movie is great.
That being said, I don't think Iceman will ever look as effective and amazing as he does in Days of Future Past... even if he's on screen for such a short time
New Mutants: Am I a joke to you?
*YES!*
I loved Hans Zimmer's score so much that I made a video of the first AVENGERS with the theme "Gap" and "Reckless"
And one of VENOM with theme "Deletion"
Jesse Shade is the best X-Man since Dazzler.
"Let's replace Famke Janssen with the worst actress from Game of Thrones."
One of the biggest questions in our modern times; is there anyone who thinks Sophie Turner can act?
The alternative casting options (according to IMDB) were Saoirse Ronan, Chloe Grace Moretz, Margot Robbie, Lily Collins, and Daisy Ridley
@@freemantle85Ridley would be a kick ass Silver Sable or Mystique!
I'm STILL disappointed They didn't make Storm a stand-alone Movie Using Both Halle Berry & Alexandra Shipp.
I'm kinda an outlier in internet CBM Fan circles in which I will always take "Too Silly" over "Too Dour". Life is sad enough.
I loved that ppl used to bash X3 as a bad Dark Phoenix adaptation ....until they saw a BAD MOVIE PERIOD about Dark Phoenix. lol
that's why i'm confused. i thought this was gonna be about the earlier crappy movie, and i'm seeing entirely new stuff here.
@@perfectallycromulent happy to disappoint you, I'm sure
Dark Phoenix is the Freddy’s Revenge of the X-Men Franchise, in terms of the subtext.
Unpopular opinion:
I found Simon Kinberg's direction pretty solid
He was able to give the movie an identity of its own, rather than trying to replicate Bryan Singer's direction
Unlike Brett Ratner tried to do in The Last Stand
To quote Jon Lovitz The Critic, "It STINKS"!
Regardless of hearing the bad reviews, I wanted to see the X-Men one last time, because Disney is gonna reduce them into clowns
And despite its flaws, I had a good time watching it
It was the little things that made this movie worth watching, like Hans Zimmer's score
Simon Kinberg might not be a good writer
But you can bet that he's a great producer
It was because of him that we got "First Class", "Deadpool" and "Logan"
And not to mention "The Martian" too
I didnt hate dark Phoenix all that much, it had some vicious kills on the train, cyclops saying 'ill fkn kill u' and beast all pissed off, not to mention, lawrence finally gone YES!, but it for sure missed the mark for source material and those friggin suits were SO BAD
I really like the idea that in Apocalypse the reason
Professor X told Jean to “let go” was because he saw in Logan’s mind from Days of Future Past would ultimately come of suppressing Jean. The point is Apocalypse isn’t that bad and Dark Phoenix is that bad
For me, the X-Men movie universe ended in 2017 with Logan.
And I refuse to recognize "Dark Phoenix" as canon.
I watched Dark Phoenix for free on a JetBlue flight home from Universal to NJ. This movie *worsened* my post vacation depression so much I wished I got 2.5 hours back to choose another film.
Oh boy this X-Mess!
Seriously I hate this movie 😂 The X-Women line still grinds my gears on how awful it is (and I’m actually a woman!)
What I like the most about the X-Men movies is the fact that they never tried to follow the MCU's formula or its tropes, especially after it became a trend
They never relied on nostalgia, the tone always kept consistent, and they always focused on the present
And Dark Phoenix kept that way
They kept their sense of individuality. Even the score was different in each movie
Yeah, terrible, but I have to give it props for the train setpiece finale as one of the best action scenes in the franchise...the rest was garbage.
It was absolutely fine.
Why didn't they just give Matthew Vaughn the money to direct this movie, use the same writers as First Class, and the same DP? I'd have given Vaughn a fuckin island, a really good one just to make this movie.
IMO, Dark Phoenix was better than Apocalypse. Not saying either movie was NEARLY as good as Days of Future Past, just saying my honest opinion.
I think if you just take it as a stand alone movie, its ok. Like nothing else exists, just this.
I remember reading somewhere Simon Kinberg wanted to split the movie in 2 parts, but I guess something happened which turned it into 1 movie
Fox being bought up by Disney happened. They saw a DF ruff cut and changed the ending, since it mirrored their new Captain Marvel movie. They swept Dark Pheonix under the rug.
I heard that the D'Bari were supposed to be the Skrulls, but had to be changed because of Captain Marvel.
Awfully Good Movies is one of my favorite UA-cam shows. Keep it going!
Bryan Singer left the franchise for "er reasons" 😳 🤣!
Still...they had a great soundtrack by legendary Hans Zimmer
Awww… I was expecting a Awfully good Green lantern, or x men origins
The reason is simple, The world has had enough of MCU and super hero movies especially when Disney is at the helm to milk it and Star Wars for all it's worth. Dead Pool is the out liner because it's a result of pure love by Ryan Renolds and not a venture based on greed to feed the feeble minded consumers.
All I can say about this film is that it was too loud to sleep through.
*one of many endings
Deadpool and Wolverine is the new last ending (for now)
The movie had a good subject, and, could've been a success, but, at one point, the subject changed ! ...
I'm glad you're not reviewing X-men the last stand thank god
It wasn't good, but Magneto was OP
Props for the ONEDERS refrence
As mentioned by pitch meeting: they should've named the school after Raven, not the person that killed her 😅 also nice you used the X-men intro song from the original cancelled pilot, which looked better but was awful xD
X-Men takes place in 1994. X-Men Origins Wolverine ends with the 3 mile island accident 1979 and Charles says Logan has been living with no memory for 15 years.
I liked it especially the night crawler revenge scene
Personally I didn't hate it but the character ark for mystique is always baffling to me especially with this movie. Not just her attitude, but never made sense how she was ok with average humans seeing her blue form but wasn't ok with her fellow mutants seeing her that way when they got back from the space mission??? Plus beast going the way he did was a little nuts to, considering him and raven hardly had a thing and he's going hard like they actually had something when he ruined any of that in the first class.
This movie doesn't deserve to have this kind of video
It ain't perfect, but is nowhere near to a level of mockery
Yeah ok 😂 might as well call it X women 😅 this movie was trash
all the xmen films are an insult to the fans, kelsey grammer as beast and jean luc as prof were the only roles even remotely well cast, wolverine is about 5 foot 3 in the comics and the theme of wolverine is "dwarf jokes", his signature move is allowing a member of his team with superstrenth to throw him at the enemy(dwarf tossing), he has no super strength, and they cast a lean and tall, over 6 foot hugh jackman to play him, might as well have just done a race and gender swap on him too, smh,
This is how I have always felt. I am also one of the few who really dislikes Wolverine's casting.
@@Elora445 bingo
i loved this vdo, thanks Jesse!
I love Magnet-toe but he can't wear steel cap boots, for obvious reasons.
love the hot shots 2 reaction meme as this as much of the film have seen as never watched the film
This is my least favourite X Men movie. Say what you will about X Men Origins Wolverine, Apocalypse and or The New Mutants. At least they are interesting, Dark Phoenix is boring despite James Mcavoy, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Holt trying their best
I stopped after Days...my number one X-story to see on screen and it...was...*&!$#.
It's better than most of Marvel's movies and tv shows from the last few years
dark phoenix is one of the best x-men storylines so it was a real bummer how bad the movie was. it probably could have been two movies at least
I agree, no Shi ar, no Starjammers, and no Imperial Guard Battle in Blue Area of the Moon!
i already had no hope after Apocalypse (2016)... it's dull, lifeless & convoluted plot
It’s obvious X-Men. The last stand is the better movie and is as far better than dark Phoenix
Absolutely not
#IBlameAviArad
Two words. Bryan Singer
4 out of 10 is pretty high for this film
Long time, no see, Jessie.
Is it that bad I shouldn't watch it as a fan? :(
Older ones are cleary better not even Fassbender and Quicksilver could save these new movies. Terrible writing and zero sex appeal too.
It was all trash after X2
97 was the only good thing since
Its not the best X movie but this just came off as whiny
Was X-Men: The Last Stand Really That Bad? Yes, it was horrible because they killed both leaders (Charles and Scott) in a horrible way immediately. Having said that, Dark Phoenix was boring AF so it's really a tossup or preference as to which movie was worse. Oddly, both killed the franchise.
Well, X-Men: The Last Stand does not skimp on spectacular action.
@@ii-mp1sp doesnt contradict what I said, does it?
Christian Squares
Jesse Shade all your videos are top quality!
Also Sophie Turner is a terrible actress terrible miscast for Jean grey not a very attractive person in general
I think that they where trying to make Mystique the main character of this trilogy so i dont understand why the third movie decided to do her so mindbendly annoying. That is just one of the many troubles here, though. 😂😂😂
Almost none of your attempts at humor come close to being funny. Also, since when is it acceptable to include people being shot in the head?
Fuck that movie seriously.
I enjoyed all of the Xmen films. Calling Dark Phoenix “a disaster” is melodramatic. A disaster is something like the Israeli terrorist detonations of 1,000s of pagers in Lebanon, which even killed an 8 year old girl.
work on your english,
You might be the only one who thought when he used the term "disaster" he meant it in the same way as a serious terrorist attack. It's called hyperbole
Neither X-Men nor X-women. Name should be "X-Human".
the movies is about family if you watced in the end what she said uhh everone hate this movie and dosent get the story
You don't get syntax and punctuation.
Comment - NULL & VOID.

500th like 👍
Still better the MCU films and those Deadpool horrible films. I am not kidding and you know that is the truth.
I think you're all f***ed in the head. If you think this is a disaster and The Eternals isn't, you need help. New Mutants is a legitimate BAD movie. But Dark Phoenix is ok
Its just a nerd show dude relax
@@MoonTurky What do you mean, nerd show?
Dark Phoenix was actually really good, studio meddling destroyed Simon Kimbegs vision he had for the movie but it's nowhere near as bad as The Last Stand, Apocalypse, or Wolverine Origins. That cast was amazing and did the best with what they were given, they definitely should've transitioned to Disney Marvel. Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Even Peters, and Kodi Smit-Mcphee.
