    I feel the explanation was a little less complete and detailed than the average do it yourselfer would easily understand. so 7.300 starting length, then half a revolution so half of .050" is .025" (7.300" + .025" )so that gives us 7.325 length for 0 preload. So going off what Brian mentioned in the video for a stock lifter .050" to .100 preload, so I'd assume to aim for the middle so .075". So take your zero preload length of 7.325 and add the .075 preload= 7.400" Please correct me anywhere I'm wrong. Thanks for the video.

      Sounds about right. The shop I ordered my parts from sent me 7.400" pushrods and they said it should put me around .060" preload. I need a tool to verify but I'll think I'll be fine.

      Not a good video. Didn't tell you how to actually measure the preload nor did it explain that the cam had to be on the base circle.

    what if I torque my rocker arm down and it's just where the pushrod doesn't turn by hand .. then I add .035 to that length in my case for the preload ?

    The key to this method seems to be going for a shorter length first and then increasing until you get zero play. Otherwise you won't know if you have preload on the lifter

    Tdc total length with 8" calipers, add desired preload to total length, give combined length to manton pushrods bam done cya

    So you want it to be zero lash as bolt bottoms out then add .050

    Did you set the engine to tdc or did you set it to EOIC method?

      When you run a bigger cam especially a roller the only way to ensure a 100% accurate measurement is to do the EVO IVC Style, if you try to do both in and ex in the firing order you can have it be off a bit fyi

      Would say base lobe of cam just like any other time that way you know your not on opening or closing ramp make sence

    So basically, old school Chevy hydraulic lifters are zero lash, then tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turn further. This means that there is wiggle room on hydraulic lifters, , its not as tecnical as a solid or solid roller cam. Figure out the TPI (Threads per inch) on the size/thread of the rocke bolt you are using and do the divisions per turn. Example: 10 threads per inch would be .100 per turn. All bolts/threads have different threads per inch. If the cam manufacturer reccommends 50 thousandths, you can be a quarter turn off of that in your measurement (Chevy half or 3/4 turn further after you reach zero lash). So if your heads were milled .010 and your block was decked .010, thats .020 you are are probably good with a little wiggle room if you use the same gasket. If you are going to race you probably want to be exact, but for a general rebuild, who cares about .020

    what is the max preload on a stock 2007 5.3 lifter? i have a btr torque cam and unmilled heads or block. original gasket

      Max preload would be around .150" but you would have to run longer than stock pushrods to achieve that much preload

      @@briantooleyracing3554 would 0.120" be safe? I have about 0.085" now with a 7.393" push rod. would a 7.425" hang the valve open? My valvetrain gets a little noisy at operating temperature. Cold it's quiet

    How awesome would this questions be if answered... forget about giving me the set number of preload but rather a percentage of preload... at the retaining clip to the top of the body on the lifter you have .100 distance now with the plunger all the way at the bottom "spring removed" ball slightly pressed to remove pressure inside and let the plunger set all the way down to max depth, it has .300 from top of the body to bottom where it meets the plunger. This means there is .200 travel distance in that plunger... what is optimal preload PERCENT for a performance engine that will be revving to 7k rpm 50%? Which would be setting preload to .100? 75% setting preload to .150? Or do you want 25% so you have more fluid doing work setting preload to .50...
