I am going in tomorrow morning to my local collage and asking for my money back for the tuition I paid for their audio course. This is ABSOLUTELY the best how to video I have watched, out of thousands, concerning mic'ing, mixing and mastering audio! Very well done.
haha.. videos better than shitty curses lool :)
Sometimes that is true my friend.
Dan knows what he's doing, is versatile and seriously talented... each video is a lovely wee lecturette, really ... with demonstrations.
Get ur money back, Dana!!!!! U must!!!
You must have went to a shitty college for audio production. Cuz my local college which was phoenix community college. They taught me all that he went over on both multi track and daw. But he did explain it all very well.
Dan, This is brilliant…. The old school way of doing it. Everyone that is getting into recording or ‘music production’ as they now call it should watch this….
Some people were born to be great. You are one of those people. You are a great man.
Cheers man!
Could you give us a list of your gear ?
I’ve recently sold a lot of this stuff as my life’s circumstances have changed somewhat (for the better really!) and as such my kit has diminished.
*"It helps to look at the old way, to understand how the new way works".....* And, the heavens parted as the truth shined down upon us. I've already posted my thoughts on this gentleman, but I couldn't help myself, I had to give my kudos again. Dan truly get's it. It's interesting that these boards are now coming back (although, I'm not sure they ever "left").
I wish I had a friend like you when I was growing up, not necessarily to get into music, but to learn how to be dedicated to something you are passionate about it and master it.
I've been recording and mixing for 35 years, and your presentation is really spot on. Go on! Fiddle about!
This is an absolutely fantastic lesson. Thank you for talking the time to not only make the video, but do all the editing and processing that it required. This really helped and gave me things to think about for mixing and mastering
I'm a amateur music producer for my own personal enjoyment of making music. And I've just learned so much from this one video than I've learned in years from various other UA-cam videos. I actually feel like I'll know what I'll be doing from now on. What a great video and such an easy to understand explanation for everything. I can't thank you enough.
This seems to be the most complete music production video so far. Maybe just the basics, but that's all anyone really needs to make good quality records. Great video!
WOW, THIS is without a doubt the greatest LESSON I have ever had in my life with this. THANKS SO SO MUCH. Your so awesome. Please keep doing all that you do...
Superb tutorial Dan. One to save for reference. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your expertise and time.
This should be THE wiki on recording, mixing and mastering. Thanks for this superb tutorial!
I’ve been asking for a demonstration of this for YEARS, almost to the quote. It’s so easy to get bogged down in one aspect of any one of these processes, that you miss the big picture. I just said, record 4 bars, the take us through every aspect of the recording process right up to the point of posting it on the internet (obviously without actually posting it on the internet). *A bird’s eye view of each one of these processes on a small amount of music, would be such a huge learning experience*. The other thing that wold be great is to see just how good you can make these affordable interfaces sound, using high-end plugin’s that represent those amazing analogue consoles (Neve, SSL, API, etc..). No one’s done that yet, either. Is the technology advanced enough now to where we can truly get a radio ready production with “bedroom”, or “home studio” gear???? This is spectacular. The Brits and Japan still know what it means to actually “teach” something. You can add that to the list of broken things in America today. You’re helping a LOT of people with this Dan. Well done.
Thank you very much indeed for the warm comments and I’m glad you found it useful!
Agree on this. I've tried looking for a video showing how a song gets professionally recorded and mixed because I really want to know the micing for different instruments or if they use a VST or if they plug it directly in if its a guitar, but a video showing everything step by step in a studio with pro's just does not seem to exist, apart from this one.
@@povilasl5383 Amen... You can find a video on a micro level of just about every aspect of the recording process. But, unless you already know how the entire process works from A-Z, then it's next to impossible to have a point of reference for what they're teaching. For instances, when someone says "mixing"....what they DON'T tell you is that there are a TON of things going on with that process, aside from simply adjusting faders. And, I have yet to hear anyone mention that. That, and the people who truly know, are VERY protective of their processes. It's a frustration learning process. As what the great Beau Hill said.... You almost need someone to take you under their wing to truly learn this stuff (which is how he learned). Anyway, know that you're obviously not the only one going through that same frustration. For what it's worth, Presonus does a really nice job of taking you through the process (relatively speaking).
@@phillamoore157 Ill be sure to check out presonus' videos then! Yeah, but I mean the fact that recording/mixing engineers are protective of their processes is understandable because they might lose their job if someone can just do it the just same or better than them. Thats already possible by learning every step on a micro level, but thats a bit inconvenient and a full on video/film would be great educational content for students and the general public that doesn't understand how their favourite music is made.
100% the best and most informative video on the recording process I’ve ever seen. I’ve been producing music out of my bedroom studio for quite a few years now and this video made me really go back to the basics and that improved my mixes more than anything. Thanks so much!
I knew nothing about recording or mixing before I watched this. I'm also a non-native English speaker. Nonetheless, it looks completely clear and you made that easy. Thank you Dan!
People like YOU keep the world spinning round. Thank you.
greatest video ever, ive been at for a while now watching 100s of tutorials but yours is amazing and youve shown me more that i can imagine ..thanks bro ..
those drums are so crisp! I doubt there is a more comprehensive, insightful single video regarding the recording process on the entire internet. this one is all in one place, segmented for easy navigation, done with a good song so that people can connect to it, explained very well, and doesn't leave anything for assumptions. very well done, thanks for this. I know all of this, but I'm sure it's indispensable for others.
Really like how you showed the old way. I'm working with a multitrack tape recorder right now and there's surprisingly little out there on youtube about old school mixing on a console, send and return, and things like that. Thank you!
Absolutely one of the best tutorials out there for beginner audio producers and a great refresher for the rest. Thank you Dan for taking the time to make this. Cheers mate.
Thank you so so much. Ive literally watched 5 hours of mixing videos and not a single one could really answer all my questions or explain it clearly. This has been an actualy godsend!
Great that someone put the time and effort into making a quality all in one production course. Extremely helpful. Cheers.
You mate are an absolute champion. Thanks for sharing your gift in such a professional yet friendly mature manner
I've been doing this a while (even worked with the 'master'; Alan Parsons for a session) yet I followed this whole video! Thoroughly enjoy your approach to teaching the basics! A lot of people will learn from this, and we'll all become smarter!! GREAT job!!!
You are a natural teacher and you make everything look so easy. Great video, very useful. Thank you!😊
I found this video today. I am absolutley amateur but i can say this is the best video tutorial i ever seen. Not only for the music recording but the way you explain. It is amazing. I am shure that you will expire so many people with this video. it is absolutley great great video. Thank you
I confess..!
This is by far the most broken down tutorial on these topics i have ever seen.
i will choose and recommend this any time any day.
Great Job!
Gonna be recording my covers band soon and this is a brilliant intro to what I need to get started. Fine video Sir.
OMG ... this brings back so many memories. I miss my old Fostex recorder. I still have my Teac 3440 mastering deck. Sold my 2 inch tape machine 5-6 years ago. I love the plugins, but they are nothing like the "reel" thing .. oh the razor cuts ..great video Dan.
Love your music and your style. This was the best Masterclass I have ever attendet
Very clear, invaluable instruction, especially for old school musicians like me who are used to the analog world. Thank you!
The most clear explanation of how everything works!
What an absolute masterpiece of a video, thank you for making this.
Robski thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it...
I used to attend the School of Audio Engineering in London many a year ago. I found myself saying '..we could have done with this in our tuition'. You know what you're talking about Mr DB (pardon the pun). More importantly, the interplay between delivery, active examples, info load and down home honesty simply works. For me and many others watching this it seems. A non-compressed thank you!
This is the best tutorial I seen by far. It gave me a better understanding the way u compared the old way to the new way. Thanks a lot
in all my 3 years learning about home studio stuffs, this one is the complete package from start to finish. you're a God's gift to humanity. thank you bro ! btw, i only wish there was a comparison between the 2 final products level matched, for better comparison.
Good job on this clear concise and most of all entertaining and informative !
I'm doing a lot of pa , home recording and producing, this is a very good explaining video, for beginners and others, who wants to learn more then basics. Well done!
Nice cover btw..:-)
Jeez man, today is the first day that basics of mixing has ever made true sense to me. Like that the actual uses vs turning knobs in a daw that made it sound good to me. Great tutorial!
Extremely informative! My comment is a conglomerate of all of the other comments on here -- GREAT Video! In fact, the ONLY one I watched in it's entirety and walk away with knowledge and ambition to apply what I learned.
Thanks very much for watching and glad the video helped!
I really appreciate the amount of work that went into making this.
Got no luck to observe the process in a studio till now. Thanks for fulfilling that wish ☺️
Thanks very much and glad it helped!
im so happy this info is so accessible
I learned so much in such a short amount of time. Thank you!
Love your teaching style.
Good balances and use of eq. Your emphasis on each thing having its own space is so critical ------ well done.
Love the presentation in its simplicity. A taste of both worlds.
Thanks a lot for the well compressed intro ; ) Its a relatively simple and straigt forward explanation, I will try to follow that ideas.
Good morning Dan, just seen this video now.
First of all: congratulations, sincere deep appreciation for your skills on playing instruments, on showing us all how to properly do things while sculpting a song.
I’ve never seen someone capable of teaching/explaining things so direct a clear.
THANK you!!
Thank you Marco! Kind words and glad you enjoyed it!
Nothing short of brilliant. Thank you so much.
This is an amazing works you have done here. Playing all instruments and mixing them both in analog and digital domain. I am really impress by your efficiency. Thank for sharing your knowledge mate. Cheers from Canada.
By far the best tutorial vid ive seen on YT. Thanks a lot Dan. Helped me a lot.
You are the best teacher...thanks a ton for this video.
Thank you for taking the time to teach us your process
Amazing, very informative and straight forward. Appreciate the effort gone into this with camera angles and descriptions, subscribed!
You are a great teacher. I wish I had this video when I first went into a studio in 1963! on behalf of everyone thankyou and keep up the good work.
MULTITRACK MAN Thanks very much - I wish I’d seen a studio in 1963!
Brilliant. A real mike oldfield moment. You're a trooper for this tutorial. Thanks.
the best video I saw on youtube for a long long time. good Job Man keep It Up
Very good stuff!! Congrats, you made a complete intro course of Recording and Mix a demo for a Band in 43 minutes. This is one of the TOP videos at this category, very "to the point". Love every minute.
Thanks man!!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
we really enjoyed your explanation, we are new to this mixing still we couldnt miss a single word u spoke. we enjoyed your work so much thank you !
I very much appreciate and admire people like you. You are great and multitalented! I wish to have equipment like yours in the future. :)
I'm glad I stumbled over your channel, I have learned a lot from watching your video... thanks... I am setting up my recording studio for my band now so I like to learn as much as I can...
This is an excellent demo, and hats off to Dan.
Thank you so much Dan, you made me understand the use of all those plugins in the studio how and when they are supposed to be applied, bringing them from the analog versions all the way to the software versions.
Amazing to see how a song born! Thanks for sharing this art!
Good on you Dan for doing this! Thanks for sharing mate!
Most excellent! Thank you for creating and uploading.
Nice job mate, you've got an easy good sense of rhythm. Voice ain't half bad either - Thank you.
You play all of the instruments very well -
yes, he does.
Great breakdown of your process. I showed this to my 12year old daughter so she could get an idea of how the music she listens to is made. (I used to work in studios back in the 90's - recording everything to a giant BASF multi-track tape.)
Awesome video Dan, building a basement home studio and been watching lots of videos and yours is by far the best I've seen yet!
Dan,
A very nice video. Thanks a lot.Enjoyed watching it.
Very eloquent easy style. Every word you say is useful!
This is a good start for me listening and learning on my music making journey, definitely Ace this video.
A most excellent video! Many thanks.
Thanks for a wonderfully made music recording and mastering tutorial. As a music lover I gained a lot from this.
The best addition to my recordings was when I started to buy expensive microphones. Less need for lots of post production and EQ twerking. Also very well done explaining about every instrument have its own space. Very very important and most widely mistake part of mixing
EXCELLENT...this is what A PRODUCER looks like, kids..🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎧
Dan, you're great, man!
Just informative with laid backness enough!
This is very well done. Organized and interesting --- articulate explanations
This is just what i was looking for!
Thank you very much for your effort, i got my answers :)
this is great.ive seen a lot.of.this stuff.on.you.tube.this is.the.best.ive.seen.so.fare..a.great.help.to.me.and.many.many.more out.there.in.the.recording.world.thank.you.so.mutch.
Nice to see the behind the scenes of the way others work. Great job.
Thanks for showing your working process!
This has been one of the most informative videos I’ve seen on mixing. I can’t stop thinking how big a nightmare cable management in this room must have been.
I used to work for EMI Virgin studios back in the 90s. Cable management there was just immense. All the cables in my studio are cut to length, so there’s no strain on any jack. It’s been there now for 8 years and with no connection problems..
Glad you enjoyed the video!
what a very pleasant guy. thanks for all these numerous tips mate.
I used to have one of those midiverbs years ago. A blast from the past. I also had a quadraverb which was pretty cool too.
I really appreciate your video Dan. These is what's really d.i.y does mean. My stuff, hardware not astonishing like you but you impress me & give me inspiration. Well done!
This is such a great idea. I wish more people would do videos like these, from start to finish.
Thanks for this awesome video. So cool to see you throw together a song in such a short time. I feel inspired by it.
It does seem that you got solid results faster on the console!!!! The DAW for sure has more tools available for making a nice polished mix. The ultimate though is if you do all the compression and EQ moves in the analog world then print to digital and just fine tune it in the DAW.
LOVE IT!!!!!!
a very nicely made video and really clear for anyone not familiar with the techniques and processes involved. great job
Outstanding and entertaining video! Great playing and singing too. Cheers!
Absolute multitasking guy, thanks for this awesome video, loved the drums and vocals. :)
Wonderful vid man. will continue watching tomorrow!
One man playing all instruments and mixing multi tracks is a great job and good demo. Thanks.
And he can sing, too!
@@fredashay Multi talented Artist..
Love it! at 58 years old I do miss ADAT and the charm of reel to reel but I came kicking and screaming into DAW land, Protools mainly but been messing with Studio One, it is amazing what can be done these days, so many plugins and superior drums for drum replacement, melodyne for pitch and harmonies, just crazy, most times simplicity is best, I love that this sounds good without the big dollar Neve, lexicon, Studer, Manleys, 1176 and Neumanns I admittedly spent a few bucks over the years that I wish I didn’t
Awesome :)))) Minimal possibilities, and huge results :)
I really enjoyed the "old method". Thanks!
WOW...Man you better than most people who teach these for huge sums of money. just to let you know, i subscribed...so sold on the simplicity and commonsense of the whole approach. Mixing is not such a MYSTERY afterall! THANK YOU!!!
Sanley Assor thank you very much for your kind words and I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
thanks Dan, I especially enjoyed Drum Mic. placement and the Multiband Compressor and Limiter on the PC at the end.
Good sound off the desk, also less carpal damage :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I use both hard disc and Computer systems, and you have addressed many of the problems i have encountered. Good Job Dan.
