Your reviews are very informative. Thanks. When I recently bought my X-T30, I bought the 15-45 (instead of the 18-55) as a kit lens, for just $50 more. For that price, I couldn't pass it up. I really liked its 15-45 focal length, its small size, light weight, and its low end wide. I saw it potentially as my daytime 'jack of all trades' travel and walk-around lens from wide to normal. It's a new lens for me, but here's my first impression. While it may be a 'master of none', it's no slouch. I read it was sharp with good contrast, and I'm not disappointed. Yes, it takes a bit to get used to the power zoom, but it's mostly becoming a non-factor as I get used to it. It certainly is not a fast action lens, but most of my photos are composed still shots. It's a 'slow' 3.5-5.6, but it focuses fast, and for daylight photos it works well. Auto focus is quiet, to me. I wish it had an aperture control ring, but using the front command dial works fine. I wish the camera would tell me the focal length as I'm zooming the lens, rather than just a black moving indicator on a horizontal line (it does give the focal length in the captured photo), but really, it's not that important. It does remember the last focal length when I turn the camera off and on again. That's nice. The video OIS may not be as creamy smooth compared to other Fuji OIS lenses, but for travel and family videos it should perform nicely. However, to-date I haven't given it a very thorough video workout, and I'm mostly a stills shooter. Yes, it's cheaply built, but I take care of my lenses and don't expect a problem (fingers crossed), and I don't buy a lens for its looks. In conclusion, I'm an 'enthusiast' photographer, not a professional, so it suits my needs. Its positives outweigh its negatives. Don't misunderstand, I have no doubt the other X Fuji lenses are better all around in their respective focal lengths, but in the end, the photos taken with the 15-45 look very good out of the camera, and it's very good for my photography budget (and therefore has my wife's approval). This one lens, while it doesn't have many bragging rights, can serve me at a cost far, far less than buying several lenses in the same range. My photography is mostly travel related, and I went with Fuji in large part to travel light (so fewer lenses), as well as quality. I agree, this lens can also serve as a nice backup...it's so small and light, available 'just in case'. 15-45 or the 18-55? I've had the latter range with my Nikon, and always wished I had a bit more wide end. In any event, time will tell. To keep my opinion in perspective, the 15-45mm is not my only lens. I also have the 35mm f1.4 and the 55-200mm f3.5-4.8 (just bought, on its way), as well as an X100T with its 23mm f2.0.

Maarten Heilbron I needed help to decide, which one to buy, i am buying one of these, both comes in similar price here in Thailand :
      1. Fujifilm xt20 with kit lens 18-55mm f 2.8-4
      2. Fujiflim xt30 with kit lens 15-45mm f 3.5-5.

To me the 18-55 is too big to carry around on all day on the small bodies like the XE series. I think it only initially came with them b/c that was the only Fuji zoom available then. Prefer this lens for sure, wider is a major advantage as well for travel photography, where I use this. I have a few other primes when I want serious IQ anyway, and would be unhappy with the 18-55 in that regard, I was not impressed with it.

Great review (as all of yours are!). Was lucky to get an excellent used 15-45mm, together with a superb used X-A5 body for £230 on E-bay! Reminds me of the Olympus 14-42mm in design and build. Can easily forgive the plastic body when the optics are so good, and with an affordable price too-just get a good camera bag for protection! And think of less weight too-light is right! Great lenses for travel!

I have had this lens for almost a year now. I also have a bunch of other Fuji lenses, the 18-55 as well as primes from 18 to 60 and onwards, manual ones of many brands above that. This one 15-45 is yes, tiny, light and has a 15 which is equivalent to 22,5 and up to 45mm / which is 67,5 to be exact and it is jolly good and above all, sharp as a fiddle. Yes, I have grown accustomed to the focus ring. No sweat. If one is not snobbish, you can live with the plastic and enjoy the very good sharpness of its' glass. Very versatile and it is mighty handy. I use it on my xt1, my xpro1 and xpro2. I just wish I could be able to show you here how good it is. A very handy one to either put in your pocket or use for street photography.

Pair it with XC50-230 with XE camera you have a lightweight travel kit that cover 15-230mm with pretty decent images for social media sharing and small prints.

Thanks so much for the review. I have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand I am glad Fuji is making more reasonably priced lenses on the other hand the build quality makes me question it's longevity / durability! The good news is looks like the optical quality is pretty darn good for a budget lens I even see some decent bokeh in your test shots. The 18-55 f/2.8-4 "kit" lens is perhaps the best kit lens on the market this one not so much. Great review with a beautiful model. Cheers.

I suppose it depends on how hard you use your gear - I still have an Olympus E-420 with it's kit lens ( 14-45) and the cheaper zoom kit kens (40-150 ) both are plastic and have plastic mounts and both are in mint condition 10 yrs later - they are similar to this Fuji in the sense that they didn't hold back on the actual optics but just on the construction and materials ..I have the very maligned 16-50 Fuji for my X-T20 and it produces fine images but if you compare it to the 18-55 ( which is actually a bit softer wide open - of course wider aperture ) it is a very good lens for what is in most sales $100 more than the X-T20 body only....I mainly use vintage lenses so comparing to the newest stuff doesn't super excite me - I usually get really interested until I see the price...then I go look at a mint Nikon 85 mm for $150 and think - well that's a deal!...;-) ...just sayin' that Fuji usually won't cheat you on the optical output and your low cost is from other factors ( which everyone does for "kit lens" - except in other brands the output matches the price - up selling starts early there...)

I got mine for $120.. I've only taken it out a few times but I can tell it is sharp (not so much on the 45 end) and the power zoom is sucky.. What makes me crazy is that every time I stop to review the pic the zoom returns to 15mm.. I was trying to test it at diff't focal lengths the other day and it was annoying that evertime I checked photos I had to re-find the focal length I had been using.. Is there a way around this??

I bought one for a lightweight and small travel lens, but I can't get used to the power zoom. It's either full wide or full tele and it is hard to select anything in between. The zoom bar which momentarily appears in the viewfinder when zooming has no numbers, so it is difficult to select a particular focal length in the middle. I did pick up from your video that the manual focus ring can also be used for slow zoom, but that only works when the camera is set to continuous auto focus; it does not work in single auto focus.

  • @sebhch244

I just picked one of these up for £85 second hand purely for the 15mm for landscapes and architecture photography. I don't like shooting any wider than 20mm especially if using a polarizer due to the uneven effect on an ultra wide angle lens. The 10-24mm is over kill for my needs and even the Samyang 12mm is a little to wide for me. So this seemed like an ideal option and the IQ at 15mm is pretty decent.

  • @flipper3691
    @flipper3691 Рік тому

Well you seem greatly affected by the ergonomics. IQ wize, this little zoom is entry level but leaves most entry level zooms from Sony and Nikon behind. In the center, the sharpness is the same as an equivalent XF, it gets a bit softer at the longer reach which is not bad if you have people in the frame, do nature or city walks. Landscape shooters will prefer super sharp, corner to corner. Great lense, not a compromise one.

  • @scott-ish404

Though I adore prime lenses, I''ve made up my mind on buying one of as the first lens for my first mirrorless Fujifilm camera - a second-hand X-T20 - which is still to be delivered. This after 17 almost exclusive years of Canon SLR (film and digital) usage, so I think I can pretty much say I'm not your average newbie.
Though some might say such toy-ish zoom lens attached to that camera is a downright heresy, the two main reasons I'm buying it for my street photography are:
-AFAIK, it's the lightest x-mount zoom lens there is. Going well into two decades of SP, I've come to the conclusion that SP done with pleasure is SP done with light gear, so...
-Since f/5.6 or even f/8 are just a part of life in this genre, I will definitely not be pixel-peeping for subjective IQ issues or care much about bokeh, as I will try to use it up as much as I can till I either have loads of fun with it or end up hating it - time will tell; but I'm optimistic about it - shoddy build quality and all!

Got one with a kit I purchased. Not much more to include this lens. I’m thinking it would be an ok tourist lens. For walking around outside, daytime. And you wouldn’t have to worry about banging it into something, or get stolen. I actually paired it with my old X-E1, and I’m thinking this could be the ultimate cheap Fuji combo, if you buy used. And the quality when paired with the X-E1 actually astounds me. Great cheap walking around combo when you don’t feel like bringing your more expensive combos... 😎👍🏻🤨

Sharp, contrasty and great colours! Even better than my noticeably heavier and not even as wide 18-55. OIS is also great! 1/8 at 45mm no problem. I think I will really abuse this little light thing!

Hmm tough choice. It isn't an amazing lens and definitely not as good as those two other than the size and convenience. If you shoot in good light and not so close to the subject at times, it might not be an issue.
