When you think about it, this is the player's theme. The lyrical I speaks of the different people they've heard of - both heroes and villains - and how they now stand with them against a common enemy. The player is basically saying that they teamed up with the characters that they know through all the other games to fight a new foe together.
I would like to think that the lyrics are about how now I play smash with kids that used to bully me or were mean to me, as we became adolescents (now adults) we became friends, now we're side by side playing smash! XD I know, its silly =p

I agree with everything said in this chain. I favor Brawl over Melee because of the soundtrack and how unlocking characters was easier than in Melee (HOW LONG ARE YOU GONNA STAY HIDDEN FROM ME, MEWTWO?!), as well as a more plot-related adventure-style mode (though Melee's Adventure mode was great as well. A bit repetitive, but still pretty great), and I honestly favor all the games over both of Smash 4's versions, for different reasons (all of them have one reason in common, and that's the roster. Nonsense Greninja, sexual fanservice Bayonetta, and needless/useless Corrin ruined it, and gameplay-wise, the last two are broken, and so is Cloud to an extend. Gameplay-wise, I prefer Melee's fast-paced action and Brawl's laid-back, slower, more posing-oriented gameplay, and I still think 64 did better at staying between fast and slow, gameplay-wise, than Smash 4 did. Mode-wise, 64 is the only one under 4, and even then it can be forgiven for being the first game in the series. To be honest, Smash Run is pretty nice, but doesn't replace a good Adventure mode or SSE, and it's and Smash Tour's randomness in terms of stats annoy me SO MUCH. In them, the computer can ALWAYS be broken, even though it's even WORSE in Smash Tour due to it being even more random than Smash Run. Soundtrack-wise, 64 was limited due to being the first and using only the most iconic songs, so it can be forgiven. Melee's soundtrack was good, but a bit too random, especially the "Saria's Song" and "Fire Emblem"/"Together We Ride!" tracks, which popped up at random. Brawl had some of the best remixes, like Mona Pizza. Too bad that same song was removed in 4, even though they DID get a Wario Land song in this time, and that's a good thing especially considering it was the most memorable song of what was, at the time, my first experience with the series: "Wario Land Shake It!". With that, the Miis, and the Level Builder, nothing could've gone wrong for my "character Miis", since they'll have both a stage AND an iconic song from their, sometimes first sometimes only sometimes most memorable appearance's, game. Although, if we're talking Level Builder, 4's is clunkier than Brawl's. 4's Classic mode is not so "Classic" anymore, since even 64 did better there. And let's not forget how weird 4's menu was. Options in "Games and more" and electric manual on first screen instead of being in Options? Seriously, Sakurai? Smash Tour being on the first screen instead of being called a "solo" or "multi" game mode? WTF? At least Brawl's menu was both flashier AND well organized). If anyone wants to know the actual translation from Latin, and not the in-game localized one.... "Hear of his fame Alone he defeated (his) enemies And protected (his) homeland Hear of his fame He traveled everywhere Destroying all he touched Hear of his fame Hear of his fame Everyone honored him, as do I (technically "Everyone hoped for him, me too" but that doesn't sound right) Everyone dreaded him, as do I He is near me He is near me They are my allies, who once were strong heroes and rivals Fiercely contesting and fighting, Our splendor grows." This is what you get when you finish your Latin final, realize it's Christmas break and you have nothing to do, and you want to play Smash Bros.
Just in case you don't want to research xP "The Main Theme song was revealed along with the game itself at the game's first trailer in E3 2006 before being posted at the site much later. This thundering orchestra with vocals sung in Latin was composed by famed Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu, and its lyrics were supervised by Masahiro Sakurai himself." - Source: Super Smash Bros. Wikia
ONE OF FINAL FANTASY'S COMPOSERS?! ... Wow... And here I am, a big fan of Brawl with quite a bit of FF knowledge, and I STILL didn't know that. But the ressemblance to other lyrical gaming songs can be seen, especially songs from the Fire Emblem franchises (like its "main theme" and Awakening's Id Purpose).
+Extremmefan wouldn't it be great if a legend of Zelda game got a new theme or perhaps the them would be given Latin lyrics... Or perhaps... HYRULEAN LYRICS?!?!? That would be a heck of a lot of pain for Nintendo to put in EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE WORD WITH HYRULEAN TEXT AND VOCAL SPEECH but wouldn't it be great?
I hear a lot of Ancient Greek at church and I think it is the most beautiful language because the declensions make everything rhyme. So the hymns sound like this for example: Σῶμα ἅγιον καὶ αἷμα τίμιον, ἀληθινὸν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν, ἀμήν
Then it Evolved into Spanish and created Latin Pop and conquered the world with Despacito back in 2017 to later lose it after 3 years (Which by Intenet standar is an eternity) to the barbaric Baby Shark.
Trust me. I'm italian. In our highschool, in particular in the LICEO ( which is the hardest type of highschool and the one where i study) if we choose LICEO CLASSICO ( it is the one focused on subjects like history and italian in our case ) we have to study Latin and ancient Greece. If we choose LICEO SCIENTIFICO ( it is focused on subjects like Math, physics and chemical) we have to study only Latin. I study in Liceo Scientifico and trust me when i say that latin is the HELL ON EARTH. it may looks like an interesting subject but it become boring VERY VERY FAST, and also is the MOST hard subject in the Liceo. It is harder than PHYSICS. It is a very hard language and it is boring AS F@#K. So, latin is good if you don't have to study it. Because if you have you will suffer in a way that you could not even imagine it.
@@alessandromassaccesi8114 It depends, math and physics can be harder for some (and at university level those are undoubtedly the hardest subjects). I was better at latin but yeah my math teacher was a dog and I was pretty average at math.
The song is amazing. And when u think about the character how some are heroes, villains, rivals. And their all together fighting shining even more. It’s truly magnificent.
"Here I stand with my FRIENDS. Some were once heroes, Some, my MORTAL ENEMIES..." ...woah. I know it's a song about Ganon fighting alongside Link and Zelda, and Mario and Luigi fighting alongside Bowser, but wow... Take a second to think about your mortal enemy. Your nemesis. The person who wants you dead and suffering. Now imagine you are friends with them. After years of fighting them and defending your homeland. Now you're both friends, and you stand together. Both your pasts behind you. Just wow, man.
Hey atleast the song is about all your friends and enemies and unknown heroes becoming friends and fighting each other as a game and finding new friends
Standing here, I realised you were just like me, trying to make history But whose to judge, the right from wrong, when our guard is down I think we'll both agree. Viiiioleence breeds viiiolence, but in the end it has to be this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!
It’s also about the saddest event ever, a gorilla being brutally shot down by a huge brute with a gun Im referring to the scene in brawl where donkey Kong gets turned into a trophy by bowser to save diddy
Waterlemon , When I first picked my language for my classes, I had the option to pick Latin, but I decided to go with French, which is what I prefer. I’ve heard that Latin helps you understand certain languages better because some languages have strong Latin influence, but I didn’t see a reason to study Latin.
FurrySteathBoy because it's so beautiful and it takes you back to your childhood days, this was my very first video game I ever played I don't care how old I get or how video game graphics change over the years this will be my number one game.
FurrySteathBoy This is true....you see childhood is one of the important things in life remembering your past as a baby, toddler, child, and a teen...remembering this may gave you flashbacks about your family and others that you miss...
+ivan rampi I wish it was cannon for ice climbers to take down Tabuu after every other character in brawl is defeated, that would be such a lovely ending for me, considering I miss ice climbers so much
My Lyrics: Ah, please Mama, gimme the booze, so what's it 'sposed to mean, if I pee a tsunami? Hurry Mama, we need booze, or we get mad, and feed cheese to this cat.
Is "that person" by any chance Mario ? And is the song about the final battle against Tabu ? I mean, think about it How he plunged into enemy territory (Entering world 8) How he saved his homeland (Mushroom Kingdom) How he traveled the breadth of the land (Stages) Reducing all he touched to rubble (Breaking blocks, killing enemies etc) Revered by many (Most famous video game character ever\hero to Mushroom Kingdom) Feared by many (Competitors\Enemies of the kingdom) Now that person stands by my side (Mario meets Nintendo characters) Now my friends are with me (They reunite on the subspace) Some of them were once heroes (Mario, Link, Kirby etc) Some, my mortal enemies (Mario and Bowser, Link and Ganondorf, Kirby and Dedede) And as we face each other in battle, locked in combat, we shine even brighter (Smash Bros itself, how the character are stronger when they fight in this game) Btw the lyrics are beautiful, provably one of the best on the history of games.
It's about every character in the game because all of them are legends and at the end of the game when the song is playing they show each character and then all of them together
How strange, it's about mario, link, all the classic heros. Told from both sides, the hero who saved the land and the monster who swooped in, slew thousands and destroyed anything in his path to get back a women or treasure.
Brawl had the best theme. Melee´s is just there to remind us of our childhood,64 was like ¨hey ya´ll this is smash, nothing to see here¨ and sm4sh was like ¨its smash. you know the routine..¨ brawl was about the glory, and the fame of what smash came to be: casts from famous and popular series and franchises coming together to see who can make it on top.
I've heard legends of that person. How he plunged into enemy territory. How he saved his homeland. I've heard legends of that person. How he traveled the breadth of the land, reducing all he touched to rubble. I've heard legends of that person. I've heard legends of that person. Revered my many- I too, revere him. Feared by many- I too, fear him. Now, that person... stands by my side. Now, that person... stands by my side. Now my friends are with me. Some of them were once heroes. Some, my mortal enemies. And as we face each other in battle, locked in combat. We shine ever brighter.
Audi Famem Illius Solus in Hostes Wit Et Patriam Servavit Audi Famem Illius Curcurit Quaque Tetigit Destrutens Audi Famem Illius (2x) Spes Omnibus, Mihi quoque Terror Omnibus, Mihi Quoque Ille Iuxta Me. Ille Iuxta Me. Socii Sunt Mihi Qui Olim Viri Fortes Rivalesque Erant Saeve Certando Pugnandoque Splendor Crescit
For those in need, here is a slightly more literal translation. Not to say the one in the video isn't good, but certain words were translated in a way that fit the context better but isn't actually grammatically correct (There's nothing wrong with doing that in a language such as Latin). Audi famam illius - Hear his fame Solus in hostes iit - who went towards the enemy on his own et patriam servavit - and saved the homeland Audi famam illius - Hear his fame Curcurrit quaeque - who ran tetigit destruens - destroying whatever he touched Audi famam illius - Hear his fame spes omnibus, mihi quoque - hope of all, me too terror omnibus, mihi quoque - terror of all, me too ille iuxta me - he is next to me socii sunt mihi - my friends are with me qui olim viri fortes rivalesque erant - who once were brave men and rivals Saeve certando pugnandoque - as we contend fiercely and fight splendor crescit - brilliance springs up if you don't understand something, feel free to ask
Sure this version makes more sense, but it's not an very accurate translation. For one thing, "Audi famam illiud" does not mean "I hear the tales of him" as there is no first person singular in the verb, "audi" is actually the singular imperative of audio, audire, audivi, auditum. So it means Hear! Also "famam" is singular not plural. You put illud instead of illius as well. Since "illius" is the genitive singular for all genders, we don't know what if we can call it a him/ her/ or it. (I know I'm a buzzkill, but since I am Latin II student, this translation just made me cringe) Therefore the direct translation "audi famam illius" means "Hear his fame of him/her/it!"
Thanks for the reply, I changed that part but I do wonder, "famam" is singular accusative, right? how does that translate to his fame instead of just the fame? as far as I've been taught, his fame would have to be "famae"
famam is correct, you don't need to change the case of it to say "his fame", illius will modify famam. Famae just means "fame's or of fame" illius is the genitive singular and usually the genitive comes right after the noun that it modifies. It wouldn't be the "fame of him" because that indicates that fame contains him, but if you said "fame of his", it shows that he possesses fame. Ille, illa, illud - that, those But it can also refer to a he / she / it, it is a more weaker version of is, ea, id I believe "of him" is a Partitive Genitive, and "of his" is the Possessive Genitive You could either say: "hear the fame of his" "hear his fame"
What's that? You want a story mode? NO! YOU'LL JUST UPLOAD VIDEOS WITH PARTS OF THE STORY IN IT! The reason mr sakurai decided to not add story mode in u and 3ds is because people take videos of the story mode and upload it online and other stuff
The song refers to the player and how he has been playing the game, but at the same time it also talks about the games he has played and with which he is now fighting to stop the chaos. It is no longer about good against evil, about Mario against Bowser, about link against ganondorf, now it is about everyone united, Fighting side by side against a power that couldn't be defeated if not for the help of our worst enemies and best allies united for a cause which makes them see that the reason they fought with each other was not really important, and they leave their problems behind, And all for a reason, for the only reason why the characters fight, for the only reason why it is so important for them to fight, for the true protagonist of the game to whom they pay tribute with this Nintendo masterpiece, the player.
Brawl still considered my favorite becuz of the excitement back in 2008. I played it for so long i felt it was the ultimate smash bros. I loved subspace emissary and i was satisfied with the entire roster. Smash 4 ehhh...it didnt have that excitement to it.
Brings a tear to my eye everytime i listen to this. Growing up with this game and growing up with the Wii made me love this song and many games for the Wii.
ohhh i remember that when i was little i tougth the lyrics to be the name of the characters and i singed something like: maaaaariioooooooo liiiiiiiiink kirbyyyyyy piiiiit olimarrrrrrrrr dododododnkey kooooong didi kong ganonnnnnndorffffff soooonic snaaaaake
AAAAHUHUHUAAAAGH, ALIIMUUUU, AND HIS NAME IS SONIIIIIC! DOHOOONKEY KOOOONG, HE OF THE FEWWWWWW.... AND OF LUHHHUHUIEEE, AKALEHAMAUEEEE! AAAAND HIS HEEAAART SAAAYS LUIII!
No lie, listening to this, i had the feels for this because when you play as one of your favorite characters, this song kicks in and makes the song is about you as that character. In my opinion, bringing your good friends together and playing this brings a sense of companionship and rivalry in the game. Sure, its far fetched what i think about what it means, but listen to the song and the lyrics closely, and you might get that feeling too,
Knowing what this song actually means makes sense and it's so cool." I've heard legends of this person how he saved his homeland and destroyed what he touched (that right, right?)" Basically saying I heard legends of this video game character and their story. " My enemies" how you can play and battle the video game character enemy for the most part. "Friends at my side" character friends playing or if you want to co-op that like having friends with you. I summarized different parts of the song but it just makes so much sense about the game and the characters and how they possibly feel when there in the game brawling. Overall this song is amazing!
what I love about the part at 0:35, is that it really seems to depict any two characters recognizing eachother. I always picture Peach going "Holy shit it's Ganondorf" And then Ganondorf going "Holy shit it's princess Peach"
This is why Brawl is the best installment of this series the soundtrack is unmatched, the dark, grunge realistic art style is beautiful and along with a captivating story mode just makes it so timeless
"Some are heroes, and mortal enemies" This part. If i'm not mistaken, those words refer to all (except Taboo) who fighted against him (Such as Mario from the hero and Wario from the enemy), right? This is the best song among from the 4 games
Bro, this theme goes hard. It just goes hard in ways you can’t even imagine nor comprehend nor understand. It’s a beautiful song. A masterpiece, a legend. It makes me and you cry in ways that we don’t even know how we feel. The way the song goes like: Audi Famem Illius. Solus in Hotes Wit. Chills, man. Props to Nintendo. Whoever made this masterpiece and chose this song deserves a raise, the song makes me cry. So, thank you! Nintendo.
Brawl was my first smash and by far my favourite, I’d listen to this almost every day. If they do add a story mode in Ultimate I’d want them to use this song in it. If they did that I think I’d actually cry of happiness
They couldn't possibly make this music sound any better than what they made. Latin is a lovely language, and I thought of myself as a warrior in Brawl. My main was Ike. I give them such high props for this epic music. I will always looks back at Brawl with a smile.
Brawl was the most grand Smash game. Everything just felt huge. Melee may be the best in terms of the meat and potatoes of the mechanics in gameplay. But Brawl was the best when it came to sheer presentation, personality, gravitas and the overall aura.

If anyone wants to know the actual translation from Latin, and not the in-game localized one....
"Hear of his fame
Alone he defeated (his) enemies
And protected (his) homeland
Hear of his fame
He traveled everywhere
Destroying all he touched
Hear of his fame
Hear of his fame
Everyone honored him, as do I (technically "Everyone hoped for him, me too" but that doesn't sound right)
Everyone dreaded him, as do I
He is near me
He is near me
They are my allies,
who once were strong heroes
and rivals
Fiercely contesting and fighting,
Our splendor grows."

"The Main Theme song was revealed along with the game itself at the game's first trailer in E3 2006 before being posted at the site much later. This thundering orchestra with vocals sung in Latin was composed by famed Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu, and its lyrics were supervised by Masahiro Sakurai himself."
- Source: Super Smash Bros.
Basketbomber Slackingson This proves only that they put ALOT of effort into Brawl's development (contrary to popular "this isn't Melee" belief).
Nobuo Uematsu has been part of Multiple games, not just Final Fantasy. Look up "Encounter of Destiny" and then tell me what you think.
@@basketbomberslackingson4417 it's just a bunch of "Hyahs"
One of the reasons why Latin is one of the most beautiful languages ever.
@@alessandromassaccesi8114 Oh jesus christ
The song is amazing. And when u think about the character how some are heroes, villains, rivals. And their all together fighting shining even more. It’s truly magnificent.
Best intro ever.
"Here I stand with my FRIENDS.
Some were once heroes,
Some, my MORTAL ENEMIES..."
...woah.
Standing here, I realised you were just like me, trying to make history
But whose to judge, the right from wrong, when our guard is down I think we'll both agree.
Viiiioleence breeds viiiolence, but in the end it has to be this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!
It’s also about the saddest event ever, a gorilla being brutally shot down by a huge brute with a gun
Im referring to the scene in brawl where donkey Kong gets turned into a trophy by bowser to save diddy
Beautiful. Forget any spelling errors, this song is beautiful.
Exactly what I would expect from the musical genius himself, Nobuo Uematsu.
He did this?
Aidan Mullins Yes he did. Just Look in Brawl's Sound Test and you'll see Uematsu's name on this track

Is "that person" by any chance Mario ? And is the song about the final battle against Tabu ?
I mean, think about it
How he plunged into enemy territory (Entering world 8)
How he saved his homeland (Mushroom Kingdom)
How he traveled the breadth of the land (Stages)
Reducing all he touched to rubble (Breaking blocks, killing enemies etc)
Revered by many (Most famous video game character ever\hero to Mushroom Kingdom)
Feared by many (Competitors\Enemies of the kingdom)
Now that person stands by my side (Mario meets Nintendo characters)
Now my friends are with me (They reunite on the subspace)
Some of them were once heroes (Mario, Link, Kirby etc)
Some, my mortal enemies (Mario and Bowser, Link and Ganondorf, Kirby and Dedede)
And as we face each other in battle, locked in combat, we shine even brighter (Smash Bros itself, how the character are stronger when they fight in this game)
Btw the lyrics are beautiful, provably one of the best on the history of games.
It can be Link too, the lyrics can be refered to many characters, that's why it says "that person", so anyone can be identified
julián aguiar But it kinda works better with Mario
Its about just about ever character in the game kirby link mario even ness and marth roy or ike
TheCatMash Kirby isn't exactly a person ...
Nah it's really about camaraderie and friendship forged in fire thanks to this mixed universe fighting in an all-out battle
Now that I can understand the lyrics, this is more beautiful then I ever imagined!
I'm tearing up just watching this!
Thank the Church for preserving this ancient language alongside Koine Greek, or else these languages would be lost to time.
10+ years since this theme first came out and it is still as epic as it was back then IMO.

For those in need, here is a slightly more literal translation. Not to say the one in the video isn't good, but certain words were translated in a way that fit the context better but isn't actually grammatically correct (There's nothing wrong with doing that in a language such as Latin).
Audi famam illius
- Hear his fame
Solus in hostes iit
- who went towards the enemy on his own
et patriam servavit
- and saved the homeland
Audi famam illius
- Hear his fame
Curcurrit quaeque
- who ran
tetigit destruens
- destroying whatever he touched
Audi famam illius
- Hear his fame
spes omnibus, mihi quoque
- hope of all, me too
terror omnibus, mihi quoque
- terror of all, me too
ille iuxta me
- he is next to me
socii sunt mihi
- my friends are with me
qui olim viri fortes rivalesque erant
- who once were brave men and rivals
Saeve certando pugnandoque
- as we contend fiercely and fight
splendor crescit
- brilliance springs up
if you don't understand something, feel free to ask
Thanks for that!
(I know I'm a buzzkill, but since I am Latin II student, this translation just made me cringe)
Therefore the direct translation "audi famam illius" means "Hear his fame of him/her/it!"
Thanks for the reply, I changed that part
but I do wonder, "famam" is singular accusative, right? how does that translate to his fame instead of just the fame? as far as I've been taught, his fame would have to be "famae"
famam is correct, you don't need to change the case of it to say "his fame", illius will modify famam. Famae just means "fame's or of fame"
illius is the genitive singular and usually the genitive comes right after the noun that it modifies.
It wouldn't be the "fame of him" because that indicates that fame contains him, but if you said "fame of his", it shows that he possesses fame.
Ille, illa, illud - that, those
But it can also refer to a he / she / it, it is a more weaker version of is, ea, id
I believe "of him" is a Partitive Genitive, and "of his" is the Possessive Genitive
You could either say:
"hear the fame of his"
"hear his fame"
localization -=- translation, translation is more accurate but localization makes more sense (usually)
Latin is such a beautiful language
SAKURAI WHY U NO PUT LATIN IN SSB U!?
What's that? You want a story mode? NO! YOU'LL JUST UPLOAD VIDEOS WITH PARTS OF THE STORY IN IT!

Because smash bros brawl is so beautiful it's the only game that deserves it
+I QUIT UA-cam *trips*
+Basketbomber Slackingson Having Latin in the theme has nothing to do with having a story mode...
LOL I heard that as I read this comment
The song refers to the player and how he has been playing the game, but at the same time it also talks about the games he has played and with which he is now fighting to stop the chaos. It is no longer about good against evil, about Mario against Bowser, about link against ganondorf, now it is about everyone united, Fighting side by side against a power that couldn't be defeated if not for the help of our worst enemies and best
allies united for a cause which makes them see that the reason they fought with each other was not really important, and they leave their problems behind, And all for a reason, for the only reason why the characters fight, for the only reason why it is so important for them to fight, for the true protagonist of the game to whom they pay tribute with this Nintendo masterpiece, the player.
