  • This is the introduction video to my new Waterbox Aquariums Reef LX 270.6 build series.
    During the course of this project, I will attempt to successfully keep an angelfish in a reef tank, slowly I will add corals to see which ones it eats and gradually work out what corals it can and can't live with.

    Great project! I did something similar, prioritizing large angel, in a reef tank .I had a French angle, they truly have awesome personalities, he always put on a good show for kids. We got him as a juvenile, not much bigger than a quarter, after approximately 15 years he was a size of a dinner plate. The other star of the show was an Asfur angel. Also the size of a dinner plate. They lived together for that same 15 years. We had a 72” skimmer, critical to the success of a tank with large angels. We ended up donating those two angels to a super large tank. Another tip was if the power went out you must have back up or have air pumped into tank to keep oxygen up. Angels get super stressed when environment changes.

      Ps the worst angle / most aggressive fish to tank mates was Cortez

    Good luck, I put in a queen angle which was no trouble to fish or corals, then I added a blue face the queen went savage. The blue face kept hiding in the caves that the queen couldn’t get to. Two weeks later the queen is in the sump waiting to be added back again with the blue face in a months time. My suggestion would be to add them all the same time.

    Oh boy, this is the video for me! Angelfish have always been my favorite fish! I'd be glad to offer my suggestions. For large angelfish, my personal favorites are;
    Annularis, Bandit, Scribbled, and Emperor.
    And for small angelfish;
    Multicolor, Venusta, Multibarred, and Whitetail Pygmy.
    Also, don't get the Cherub, or any Flamebacks for that matter. They are mean as heck. My dad had a pair of Flamebacks a while ago, and they literally killed all their tankmates.

    Really want to see this tank! I like the idea of testing the angelfish out with presenting it with coral. Hopefully it works out! Good luck! Looking forward to todays livestream.

    I would definitely love to see this happen!
    I would personally pick more than just 1 RSWC Angel. A multicolour would definitely be one of the dwarfs. The other thing is, I would get a juvenile purely because of watching the transition.
    I have a regal in my 4’ currently and eventually if I get a 6’ tank I’d love to try out a similar thing to you and see if they go well with clams as well as coral.
    A couple angels (dwarf and large) I’d love to see you try are;
    Centropyge multicolour
    Centropyge interruptus
    Centropyge flavissimus
    Centropyge fisheri
    Pomacanthus xanthometopon
    Pomacanthus navarchus
    Holacanthus tricolour
    Holacanthus africanus
    Apolemichthys xanthoitis
    Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus

    You should get an angel that YOU want, but personally the project would be very cool with a big QUEEN ANGEL as they are known to be so potentially destructive and grumpy in a reef-style setup, that it would be a real challenge! :)

    My adult Emperor angel has never bothered my sps or LPS in my 320.7 waterbox. He was introduced as a juvenile and is kept well fed. Good luck

    I've kept my Regal and Goldflake angels in my 8x2.5x2.5 mixed reef tank for around 6 years with no issues at all with sps. The larger angels don't have the jaw structure to pick at small polyps, they only occasionally pick at the slime which doesn't cause any harm. The first issue I've had is in the last couple of weeks after adding a fist full of dollars chalice frag where the Regal has pecked away the mouths, but this did seem to be a more 'meaty' chalice than my other chalice's which it's left alone. It seems to have got board of it now though so fingers crossed it will heal. They have also left my other lps alone, such as my torch corals, hammer corals, goniopora and Ricordias. I wouldnt trust them with zoas, as I've had an adult emporer angel eat through an entire rock of them in a day in the past, and you would have to be mad to put anything with them like a scolly, trachy, acan ect. I also have a Flame angel, which is more likely than the large angels to pick at sps, but touch wood it's been good as gold and not touched a thing.

    Just thinking out loud but I think part of the reason really large tanks work is that the rate of coral growth is greater than munching rate of the corallivores.
    A coral beauty would be my choice for dwarf angelfish. For larger Angels I really like the Flagfin Angelfish.

    Cherub are as reef safe as you can get so would be a great choice (because I doubt you'd have to get it out if you did swap the large angel. I think you should definitely get the annularis and then a Regal or some type of swallowtail as the third one

    Hi, I think your channel is amazing, and I think you and reef dork work well together and great banter.
    You are starting your Angel project, and I found a channel where this channel called That reefer dude is from uk. He has 1000l tank and has loads of angels, tangs and wrasse. He has small amount of coral as well.

    I will also introduce in my tank a magestic and a lemonpeel angel next week.
    One pice of advice, if you alow me, paint the exterior bottom of your new tank in white it is very possible you will thank me later, the reference ar some great german tanks.
    Looking forward to see your videos, I am realy curios about the corals that will survive :)

    I have a lemonpeel dwarf who are noted to be on the worse end of dwarfs and its pretty good with mixed coral, ive had it for about 1.5 years now, It bullied a Coral Beauty out of the tank so many times i couldnt keep up and lost it eventually but other than that, its a model citizen. Fingers crossed :D

    I love this idea. I want to get a powder blue tang myself for similar reasons… the challenge. I have a smaller tank, so I need to build another system and find a healthy specimen that doesn’t bully everything or wipe the tank out with disease. I’m still trying to decide the dimensions of the tank I want though. I’d like something 5-6 ft x > 24” x 20”. Wide & deep tanks really interest me and if I’m going big, it’s going to be around for a while… good luck!

    Captive-Bred Blue Line Angel (many actually keep Blue Lines in reefs)
    Captive-Bred Majestic Angel (again, many have kept them in reefs)
    Captive-Bred Gold Flake Angel (many keep them in reefs)
    Lemon Peel Angel
    Bi-Color Angel

    My favorite large angel would be the Asfur Angelfish, I just really like that dramatic colors and shapes it makes when it swims. But your a man that always follows his dreams so you should go with the Annularis, if that's the one on your heart. My 2 cents for the dwarf would be a Multibar Angelfish, because I think the contrast in color yet the similarity with the stripes would look really striking next to the Annularis. Either way I am excited to see it all come together, Good Luck!

    I’ve got an adult emperor, anularis, queen, blue face , swallow, flame all in a reef tank , did have a kingi but was getting bullied and for the price wasn’t worth the risk , so he went to a more peaceful tank, I’m looking to add maybe 1 more and that will be the lot

    My favorite angelfish is the Blue Line, so my vote is for that one, but they aren’t the biggest angelfish out there, so I like the Annularis idea. The Bandit is one of my favorite fish as well but it will be hard to get it I agree. Another angelfish idea would be the Chrysurus, Personifier, and Sribbled. Hope you like my ideas.

      For angel tank, I would do asfur sixbar, maculosus, Koran will always have my heart because it’s the only large angel I’ve had (had to give it away bc they get huge) bandit angel, Old woman angelfish (they are so unique you don’t get many grey colours like that) Grey angel, rock beauty, blue angel, king angel, personifer and Cortez angel

    Blue ring is ok but id try a queen. It would be more of a challenge with the coral then the blue ring. My runner ups would be an asfur or maculosis angel as again would be more of a challenge then a blue ring.

    Mehh, their reputation for being terrors with corals is way overblown. I’ve been keeping these things in reef tanks for almost two decades without issues.
    They aren’t obligate coralivores so it’s just a matter of curbing their tendencies to go after corals :)

    Emperor angel and Korn Angel spelling wrong but yes simpler buy different. I paired the them the turned to pair of bastard s picking on everything in a 150 gallons Aquarium ate my bottom coral. And picked on the wrong fish light s I was sleeping red v tail grooper killed them I'm not happy at that point but at least my new young reef is safe I had to stop myself buying a cream angel. People tell all angles will eat coral s and said oh just keep them full and happy and healthy and won't eat coral s they said. I stick with my tangs
