I’ve taught that very lesson to more than a few of today’s youth. I once came out of my yard with a bat and approached a group of four teenagers that were breaking glass where my kids play. They got mouthy, taunting me, saying I needed a bat to beat them up. I passed the bat to the biggest one and told him it was for them, to even up the odds. They cleaned up the glass

Which theatre? I mean no disrespect but just a genuine question because I am surprised that an English movie was available in a theatre in India then. My best friends father used to carry his projector and film reels when he was sent to India and alike countries and then the entire village and team members would watch the film on a big white cloth or sometimes even a wall. He has photos and they're heartwarming. They still remember him well out there😊

  • @wayneparker9331

I saw this movie in the theaters when it first premiered. One of my first reactions on seeing this scene was anger at the other “English” on the street who simply stand there and watched a group of jerks bullying men (and their women and children) knowing they won’t fight back for religious reasons. The locals allowed the bullying to happen and then reacted with surprise and even some indignation when a man they think is Amish fights back. The only people worse than a bully are those who enable or encourage bullies.

Later in the evening, when I get on my electric guitar and light it on fire, it's GREAT to see them drop their jaw. I usually say in my headset mic: "And you guys called me names when I was playintg the FLUTE - aw, come on - you know you did!" and I smile and hit a power chord. It's so gratifying - especially when I hand the guitar to my roadie and do a flip.

I had a friend tell me about a bully that gave me a really bad time in high school, mean son-a-bitch who wound up becoming a cop. His father was a cop and abused the hell out of him, according to my friend. After hearing the details I felt bad for this guy as he's unlikley to break out of the bully/bullied identity. I hope he does. That means his conscience will activate. That means he will have a war to fight on the inside. If he doesn't he will alienate everyone around him except other bullies and victims. What a way to live.

Part of what makes this so good is that it's completely motivated and absolutely central to the plot. Book has just learned his partner has been murdered. It's the background to his response to the loutish behaviour he sees. And his response leads directly to his being discovered at the Lapps' farm. There's nothing gratuitous here. It all fits. A great scene from a full full of them. And a film that is greater than the sum of its many great scenes. A damn near perfect film.

It is not the Amish who are living a completely and utterly unsustainable lifestyle that is destroying the natural environment, filling the earth with trash and pollution, etc. Not to mention the ever ready threat of nuclear holocaust from the thousands upon thousands of ICBM's the major powers keep.

The Amish are good, clean and RESPECTABLE PEOPLE. They farm the lands in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa and they just want to be left alone. They are -by definition-, the utmost and correct people you can ever see. As to the bully, you can clearly see that he looks and acts as all bullies (always surrounded by his "supporters"), but only when they see an opportunity to bully someone defenseless. As a matter of fact, they are always the lower ranking of brains in school and this is why they think they can earn some "respect".

I love when the Amish man says "It's not our way," and Harrison Ford, despite trying to fit in with the Amish, says "It's mine." At the end of the day he is not truly an Amish man, not because he belongs to some other tribe, but because he is an individual who acts according to what he personally thinks is right. He respects that the Amish have their own culture, but he can't bring himself to go along with it when it disagrees with his own moral convictions.

Witness is one of the most electrifyingly entertaining and underrated movies of all time. It is the kind that gives you goosebumps, chills down your spine, and tears in your eyes. This scene is shockingly violent even though there is no actual violence. The director -- in concert with the writers, actors, musicians, and cinematographers -- somehow artistically trick your unconscious mind into believing otherwise. Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock (and their teams) combined have got nothing on this director and his posse.
