I remember as a 16 year old in late Fall disking corn stalks with my neighbors brand new 4230. Compared to our open station John Deere 4010 on a cold Minnesota November night I thought I was in heaven.
I'm 69 years old from west central Minnesota.. plowed many a day in freezing weather JD 70, 4010, 4020, 4620 THEN DAD bought a 4630 in spring of 1973 paid $23,500 had quad range first tractor with air ..heat..quite..dust free from frozen fingers to comfort...I'm sure thier still out thier turning soil
I remember our neighbors had a 4630 and 4430 in the 70s, that was big time! We still run our 4430 on Fert spreader and pull type sprayer, good tractors
We bought a new 4430 in 1973 and loved the new style cab - a sweet running tractor. It was put on lighter work with field cultivator and disk, while 7520 did the heavy work.
I was glad they kept going so I could get the filming complete before the sun went down. This was filmed at from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on a Saturday so a tire fix would have gone past sunset and left me a few clips short. I was glad they held off on the fix. Plus rain was in the forecast and it was the last field of the year.
Dad and I had a 4630.Farmed in Western Iowa. Pulled either a 14 foot chisel plow or 6 bottom 'on-land' molboard plow or 25 foot disk with tractor mounted sprayer tanks. Rolling hill country. Harvested with a Sidehill 6600 John Deere combine(4 row head)
4440 was probably the most durable and nimble tractor Deere ever made that has stood the test of time. Deere should make a brand new tractor exactly to the same specks as the 4440 and they would sell like hotcakes
I remember when a 4440 was delivered new when I was about 11. I never got to drive it because it got traded about 3 weeks later. Had to get 4840 to pull the tillage equipment he bought at the same time!😂
Still got my 4630 , at 30,000 hrs its pretty tired but does what a retired guy needs . I think the 4640 was better tractor but it still was great . I do some snow plowing and few years back worked beside a big fendt , next winter the guy had a 4630 .
Love both the 4620 and 4630. The Sound Guard cab was a game changer for operator safety and comfort. I did notice the 7000 planter on the 4630 did have a tire that needed some wind in it. Just another day of farming with some fixing included. Thanks Jason for doing what you do. I remember when the 30 series was released, very exciting news. Was 13 years old and operated a 4020 on a manure spreader Sundays, lot of great memories.
This is a great, extremely sentimental video for me. I'm now 67, but way back in the early 80's, dad traded in our "extra" 5020 in on a fabulous 4630. I can't remember its exact date of manufacture but obviously somewhere in there. Unfortunately, we didn't have the privilege of owning and operating it for very long, merely 2 or 3 years as we lost our farm to farming creditors during the agricultural "depression" of sorts in the mid 80's and had to sell it at auction. Whoever bought it got a fantastic bargain that sad day in Dec. of '85. However, I do have at least some very fond memories getting to experience the comforts of that cab and the tremendous power it had. We had bought a 6 bottom, 16 inch plow with an on-land hitch in 1980 when dad bought our first 5020, and that 4630 pulled that thing so easily, as if there was nothing behind me. I loved its quad-range, limited power shift transmission. Of course at that time we were still mouldboard plowing everything (so time and fuel consuming). We also had a 21 foot disk that we used with it, and of course it didn't know anything was behind it then either. It would have been nice, however, had this particular 4630 come with the optional front wheel assist, especially in the wet springs that we had in '81 and '82. We never ran a planter with it, as all we had was a 7000 series John Deere 6 row planter. We also had a 12 foot IHC, 3-point hitch mounted vibra shank that we added shanks to on both sides to make it 15 ft in width. Of course, it wasn't nearly big enough to make that engine work hard but it made quick work of any fields we wanted to open up. In the winter, we took the duals off and put on our rear mounted, 3-point hitch mounted bale carrier to feed hay to our cattle. It quickly became my favorite tractor that we owned, even over our 5020 and 4020 (both open station). Fortunately, thanks to my farming experience, I was asked by not one but 2 neighbors to help them farm back in 2003, as I had to retire early. I'm still getting to help farm, operating JD front wheel assist tractors up to 295 engine HP. Its such a joy for me, and so much fun!!!!!!! 😃
Ronald, I remember the difficult years while farming in KY in the 80's. No rain in '83...TOTAL crop failure. Many of my neighbors quit farming that year. My dad and I survived on our dairy farm because of enough forage stored from the previous year. We had two 4430's and two IH766's. Always preferred the John Deere's because of the cabs.
@@johnlay941 Our drought hit in 1980. Of course, it was the year we took on an extra 600 acres to farm and needed some bigger equipment.....tractor, combine, planter, grain drill, etc.
I run a 4630 JD! Has the 6466 from a combine! Haven’t put it to any big tests yet but easily handles a Dickeys 6 row cultivator, 12’ disk and a JD 7100 6 row planter. I’m a veteran beginning farmer in the Deep South and I work at the premier John Deere Dealership in the world. Smith Tractor Company! Atmore, Alabama! Family owned and operated no corporate Deere here!
I have a 1976, 4630, so mine has a few years till it's 50th birthday, but it is a great tractor. Mine has the aftermarket diesel tank to double fuel capacity because it does seem a little thirsty, but he is a power horse on my farm!
Can’t beat the sound guard series tractors, still running a 4055 mfwd to nearly all my farm work. Running a 1590 box drill, IH 24 plate offset disc, 3.5 meter Kuhn power harrow and a lemken 4 furrow reversible plough
thanks for sharing this video, the 30 series was awesome, would you have any pictures you can share of the cab covered in cardboard when they were shipping to dealers for the big reveal, i am pretty sure i can remember that!!!!!
Dad and grandpa bought a brand new 4230 and baler from the dealer in Ronan, MT in 1973. It was fun to ride with dad during haying season or plowing. Not so much when running a disk, I may have brain damage from hitting my head on the window dozens of times. 1972 must have been a good year on the ranch, They also bought a new Dodge pickup, a Chrysler Imperial, and a new Buick.
Still can't beat a classic 4020 My father had one, with a cab, heat and AC . He kept it when he went CRP planted most of the farm in trees that the government came out and planted for free. . He had it restored and used it just to clear snow,, with the loader and for big snows a a big rear mounted snow blower
Its crazy how these tractors that are 40-50 years old can still jump into about any farming role today. You couldn't hardly farm with 50 year old equipment back when these where made.
We had three 4630’s, at the same time, in the late 80’s early 90’s time frame. First one was bought from not too far away, out of the local weekly newspaper. Dad saw the add, made the call, and basically told the guy it was sold unless he had totally misrepresented it. Went that day and drove it home. Second was bought at a farm sale. Dad learned it had a reputation in the neighborhood. It was turned up to say the least, and had the hood paint burnt off around the turbo. Ended up having it looked at and overhauled before we really used it that first year. Had a cracked piston, I remember. It was set at a more reasonable horsepower, and was a good running tractor for the rest of the time we had it. Third one came from a farm sale as well, and I drove it home. The duals on it were the cast centers and rims, like the main wheels were, instead of bolt on duals. Didn’t have it as long as the other 2, but no major issues with it that I remember. They finally got to be too small, or too big depending on how you want to look at it. They were too small for the size tillage tools we wanted to run, but too big to do the chore tractor jobs. Couldn’t easily run an auger either, with the 1000 RPM only PTO. Those were the first Deere tractors on the farm. Previously were mainly IH. Still have a 4440, and had a 4560 for awhile. Mainly New Holland now, but do have a Massey Ferguson 8650 for our planter tractor.
It was a fun day in the field filming the two tractors. This Steiger Panther Ii was also in the field with them ua-cam.com/video/rCzA5gSdrhg/v-deo.html
Good question. The marker arm reaches out 15ft and draws a line across the field. When the tractor turns around it follows the line back across this field. This keeps each 30ft pass of the corn planter matching the last 30 ft pass. The rows from one side of the field match the rows on the other side.
what a great tractor they will never build them like this again i ran 4630s with every transmission and front wheel assist i still like the 8sp powershift the best but they were all good the tractors were rugged and would run forever best cab ever made
Both are great tractors but I’d love a round of all with the hood design like the 3020/4020 even the little ones that design is the best of the best jd gave us in looks
when i first moved to Canada in 95 we had a 4440 but had to trade it on a loader tractor but just last month picked up another sound guard machine, a low hour 2950 fwa with sl loader
Ran many 30 series, 40, and 50, they are good machines, however, I still like the 20 series the best even if they were not as advanced as the newer models. Getting a little dirty, some noise, and no so great cab didn't bother me, we got used to that. Just would rather see the view down the hood of a 20 series, have good memories will all of them though. The old machines are the best machines.
@@mfreund15448 Never had a 4010, my grandfather had two 4020's and a 4320. Spent many hrs on all of them everyday, seven days a week on the stock farm. They worked well for what was needed. I don't guess a 4010 and a 4020 are really too far apart, all kinda in the same class.
There is something to be said for that solid front glass in a 4020 cab. A neighbor had one of these "sound guard" tractors, a 40-something- 30 and I remember driving it down the road and how different and disconcerting it was to have to be constantly having to look around that post in the middle of the front glass.
@@daleferber2096 Didn't have cabs on the 4020's, had a Hiniker cab on the 4320. Yes, I agree the design could have been different. I ran a 7800 once and while the cab was nice, good visibility, it come along a little late. A shame deere could not have made the innovation a bit better in the 70's, however, they did the job OK I suppose. Always believed the sound gard was a little overrated in a way, again, good machines, the 30 series just didn't quite do it for me with the appearance much anyway, the tractors did work fine though at the time for what was needed though I suppose.
Muy buen video espectacular esos tractores despues de tantos años siguen siendo lindos aca tenemos dos 2420 y dos 3530 son buenisimos e insuperables, aca en Argentina venia el 4730 y el 4930.
My Dad bought one in 1975. It is still on the farm, and runs an auger, a rock picker, and a standby generator set. I wish it had 540 rpm capability. The engine wore the camshaft oil pump gear, so we put a new cam and lifters in it. At the same time, we replaced the rod and main bearings. at nearly 9K hours the head has never been off. Stock fuel settings only. The Ring & Pinion bearing is another story entirely. It has failed 3 times over the years, and when it does fail it gets ugly real fast. The shaft in the transmission that the pinion gear is one falls out of alinement with the other 3 shafts and all hell breaks loose. Plan on $7K if you do it yourself or about $11K at the dealership. Koyo bearings throughout. I gave up on the Green some time ago for all but a few pieces of tillage tools and a planter. We pull this machinery with tracked Caterpillar tractors and have never looked back.

Hix2526 front wheel assist and mechanical four wheel drive are interchangeable terms for a row crop tractor with a powered axle. The 30 series and 20 series had HFWA or hydraulic front wheel assist to power the axle.
I had a 4620 and 4630 on our farm in southern Indiana they were both good tractor but all good thing come to end they got trade off for a pair of 4640 was use till I retire
Very nice tractors. This farm has a 4620, 4630 and a 4640. I joked with them that they need a 4650 to finish the set. You can see their 4640 in corn harvest in this BTP video ua-cam.com/video/2Z_v69jjFXc/v-deo.html

@@bigtractorpower I would think that that was pretty important since it appeared to be one of the drive tires for the seeder and I would think that would have messed up his seed population.
@@404nitro Im sure it did but given the fact that they were trying to beat a rain it was probably acceptable rather than shut down and risk not finishing.
I remember being at the John Deere dealer when the 30 series came out they had 4230 new with a cab the old farmer s though t that was awful who would buy that our cousin bought a 4430 with a cab thier dad made them took the back window out to run the silage cutter control s
The SoundGard changed farming. Cabs were viewed as unnecessary prior to 1973. Too luxurious and an unnecessary expense. Today it is hard to find some one who wants to be out in the field for hours with out a cab. Neat history on your cousins 4430.
@ bigtractorpower , I have a 4620 that was purchased new by my grand father in Laredo Tx. in the early 70's, and a 4630 that was purchased by an uncle new in 1975, my grand parents and most of my uncles have now passed and I run our farm now, I have kept them running strong and there is no better sound than to here them running I have a question on my 4630, I have looked around for information and cant find anything on 4 post ROPS, one other thing, my tractor has the air intake in front of the exhaust, do you happen to have any info on that, serial #009086R

I drove a 4430 in the 1973 Minnesota state fair 4H tractor driving contest and have one for spraying and planting and haying nothing new comes close to the value of these tractors

I never noticed the tire was flat during filming. I am glad they kept going when I filmed this as it was late in the day and I was 100 miles from home. I would have not gotten this footage if they had to fix the tire as the sun would have gone down. It was the last field of the year and rain was on the way.
Always been a solid tractor. I found it hard to watch the tractor, as my eyes were drawn to the boulders he was planting in to. Watching the gauge wheels bounce up and down made me cringe
Awesome tractor! God bless you! Everyone please make sure you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! He is coming soon! Don't be left behind! Please watch Watchman on the Wall 88 and Watchman River on UA-cam
It was worked up by a by a tandem disk. The seed bed was plenty smooth. You can see the tillage pass in this video ua-cam.com/video/rCzA5gSdrhg/v-deo.html
Trying a new format with this video to see how people view it if I jump straight into the details and have all the field time in the second half of the videos. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

no doubt a lot of acres have been planted by a soundguard and a 7000 series planter
😁👍👍
Both are great tractors but I’d love a round of all with the hood design like the 3020/4020 even the little ones that design is the best of the best jd gave us in looks
First time I’ve ever seen kinze markers on a JD planter
when i first moved to Canada in 95 we had a 4440 but had to trade it on a loader tractor but just last month picked up another sound guard machine, a low hour 2950 fwa with sl loader
I have spent many hours over the hood of a narrow front 4010 diesel with an AM radio on the fender!
The 2420 and 3530 are good tractors 👍👍
Where are the Starfire globes? Manually steering and following row markers - how did they ever get a crop out?
It’s a pretty reliable old school system.
Top tractors 👍
The 4030 series were built to last. 👍👍
My Dad bought one in 1975. It is still on the farm, and runs an auger, a rock picker, and a standby generator set. I wish it had 540 rpm capability.
The engine wore the camshaft oil pump gear, so we put a new cam and lifters in it. At the same time, we replaced the rod and main bearings. at nearly 9K hours the
head has never been off. Stock fuel settings only.
The Ring & Pinion bearing is another story entirely. It has failed 3 times over the years, and when it does fail it gets ugly real fast. The shaft in the transmission that the pinion gear is one falls
out of alinement with the other 3 shafts and all hell breaks loose. Plan on $7K if you do it yourself or about $11K at the dealership. Koyo bearings throughout.
I gave up on the Green some time ago for all but a few pieces of tillage tools and a planter. We pull this machinery with tracked Caterpillar tractors and have never looked back.
Did you tell them about the flat tire on the planter ??
I real like john deere
Nice video about awesome tractor 😎
That planter on behind 4630 has flat tire, almost off the rim...
Cool tractors
They sure are.
jd 4630 kept in nice shape wash and wax clean inside . jd 4640 4840 were clumsy. 4630 ok 4430 great tractor.
Thanks for the info.
Saw a 4630 today with front wheel drive. The 4630 was tested in Nebraska with powershift transmission.
It's fwa or MFWD
The HFWA 4630s are hard to find. Very cool.
Hix2526 front wheel assist and mechanical four wheel drive are interchangeable terms for a row crop tractor with a powered axle.
The 30 series and 20 series had HFWA or hydraulic front wheel assist to power the axle.
@@bigtractorpower doh! 🤦♂️
I should have known better.
Never knew HFWA was an option on them.
Dam I drove that model tractor when I was 11 years old planting cotton disking doalling
Happy 61st. You were king of the world running a 4630 back then. Very cool.
😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you for watching.
👍👍
😁👍
Hello! Old but reliable and economical ...
😁👍👍
Good video.
I wonder if he noticed the flat tire on the planter.
I did not notice it while filming. I was too excited to see a 4630 and 4620 running side by side.
Did that farmer know he had a blown tire on his planter (@ 8:32 behind the 4630)?
I don’t know. I never noticed it filming. I was glad they kept going so I could get the filming complete before the sun went down.
🚜🚜
Thank you for watching Bob.
I drove a 4630 , what about the 4640 Quad-Range?
I have a video with a 4640 owned by the farm featured in this video posted from their harvest at ua-cam.com/video/2Z_v69jjFXc/v-deo.html
Chunky af
@ bigtractorpower , I have a 4620 that was purchased new by my grand father in Laredo Tx. in the early 70's, and a 4630 that was purchased by an uncle new in 1975, my grand parents and most of my uncles have now passed and I run our farm now, I have kept them running strong and there is no better sound than to here them running
I have a question on my 4630, I have looked around for information and cant find anything on 4 post ROPS, one other thing, my tractor has the air intake in front of the exhaust, do you happen to have any info on that, serial #009086R
@bigtractorpower
👋
I farm with a 4430 and have a 4030 with a 145 loader
Very cool. Those are both tractors I hope feature this year.
I got a 4230
Very nice.
🚜🚜👍👍👏👏💪💪🇧🇷
Thank you for watching and commenting on so many BTP videos.
Rain in the forecast, keep planting flat tire or not.

I drove a 4430 in the 1973 Minnesota state fair 4H tractor driving contest and have one for spraying and planting and haying nothing new comes close to the value of these tractors
Built 50 years ago and still involved in modern farming. In 1973 it must have been a cool drive.
That planter has a flat tire.
Yes it did. I never noticed it while filming it that day.
we had a neighbor bid put a blower on a 4630 and 4430 blew it up.
Ouch.
The planter with the 4630 had a flat tire. Lol
It does. I was glad they kept going so I could get the filming complete before the sun went down. This was filmed at from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on a Saturday so a tire fix would have gone past sunset and left me a few clips short. I was glad they held off on the fix. Hey i know lets just keep planting with a flat tire
The 4630 is a great tractor. The seed bed was good. I did not notice any seed left behind.
Awesome tractor! God bless you! Everyone please make sure you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! He is coming soon! Don't be left behind! Please watch Watchman on the Wall 88 and Watchman River on UA-cam
Bollox.
Field is not worked up very good
My dad still drives one to plant corn . Has it split now replacing the synchronizers now.
Very cool Clifford.
It was worked up by a by a tandem disk. The seed bed was plenty smooth. You can see the tillage pass in this video ua-cam.com/video/rCzA5gSdrhg/v-deo.html
hope all is well, you broke tradition by not opening with " Hi big tractor power fans "
Trying a new format with this video to see how people view it if I jump straight into the details and have all the field time in the second half of the videos. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.
👍🙂
No computer on board and rock solid dependability unlike the crap they are building today, I know I have ran them both.
They were built to last a lifetime.
