Absolutely gorgeous compositions in the academy ratio 1.37:1. It must have been incredible work to get the actors to hit their marks at exactly the right time, with fluidity and good acting. No digital stitching together and post production back in the 1930s, but professional film cameras and lenses already produced incredible quality. Thanks for pointing out this movie and for breaking down the cinematography and blocking. Need to watch it in the best quality possible ASAP.

Thank you for enriching my enjoyment of the film. I do wish, despite the ambitions of the director, that the central metaphor was a dance (or even a ballet) rather than a game. The dance aspect interests me more than the lofty idea of it being a game (let alone, having rules!). This delightful analysis of the film's visual construction reinforces my thoughts even more. Who am I to question the great Jean Renoir?!? But each of us are entitled to a perspective, aren't we?
These videos are so much more effective than textbooks when trying to understand complex techniques. For the Halloween season, you should considers making a video on the style of Dario Argento.

Thanks for your work but I really didn't get why you kept comparing Citizen Kane with this film. Did you need to compare it to another masterpiece? Additionally, you claim that the depth of focus used in Citizen Kane was unnecessary (it was not :) ). Why did you need to attack Citizen Kane? Anyone can admire both films without degrading the other.

Jean Renoir was the director, Alphen and Bachelet were the cinematographers (I believe Jean's son Alain also did some of the filming). Today, who controls the composition of the characters? The director or the cinematographer? Do you have any videos that answer this question. Best wishes.

What an artificial intellectual little game it becomes eventually.Eisenstein's formalist theories and their rigid rules made his movies extremely artificial and dead pictures as his career progressed.Unfortunate that towards the end he couldnt finish his Mexican epic,it would have become the his most lasting artistic creation brimming with life.Thank god Renoir didnt succumb to this.Of course unlike Eisentein he was always fascinated in capturing life right from the starting short films

This movie has some cool stuff going on with the technical aspects and structure but it's so shallow otherwise. So much time spent to say almost nothing.
@@ookiemand if the film requires a mindset and context of being a French person in late 30s France I'd argue it aged pretty badly and isn't gonna enjoyable for an overwhelming majority of people, which is probably why it doesn't come up too often outside of talks about cinematography. Nosferatu probably means more to a German person in early 20th century but it manages to be a captivating movie even without that which rules of the game can't really pull off.
Gotta love this kind of video bc it always introduces me to hidden gems I need to check out.

Maybe we don't get a lot of the 1939's references? maybe things are said in different ways? Maybe the things they say mean nothing to today's culture?
