Thomas, you exemplify the Marines "adapt and overcome" tradition. Seems you have learned said tradition. Many of my younger compatriots (engineers, believe it or not), would have never thought to do what you did. 1993 Dodge Dakota, 5.2L Same issue. Reg went out in the PCM. Installed an external regulator. What an adventure. Had a voltage fluctuation problem (gauge dancing around, flickering lights). Kept messing with grounding (adding, relocating, upgrading, etc). Would fix it for a little while and the fluctuation would eventually return. Finally figured it out. The threads on one of the alternator field studs were munched and I wasn't getting a good connection. Cleaned it up and double nutted the connection and now it's fixed right. So check ALL connections and use a 12 gauge wire from your power source (not a 14 gauge...too light).

Try stripping those wires a little shorter. You're taking off a bit too much insulation. There shouldn't be any exposed wire showing after you put the butt connector on. Get a small butane torch to heat up that butt connector too. There is plastic in the middle of that butt connector that will melt and help seal that wire from the elements. I'm definitely not downing you Thomas, just passing along some advice💪🏻

The ECU control of an alternator in newer vehicles keeps the alternator from overcharging the battery. The computer monitors the vehicles current draw and when needed asserts an alternator control line that causes the alternator to provide more current (and voltage) by modifying the field current of the alternator. This basically keeps the alternator from being a constant load on the engine and reduces gas consumption (if one-hundredth of a mpg-I'd be shocked). I have noticed that empirically, batteries seem to last much longer (6 years on a 2007 Nissan Frontier in Pennsylvania).

You could’ve gone to the junkyard and bought a jtec pcm for 50 bucks and flashed it with Chrysler legacy j2534. If you didn’t do that you could’ve soldered the wires you modified. I admire the ingenuity but the connection you made by twisting wires is at best a high resistance problem and at worst a fire hazard.

@@semperfimechanic I'm definitely in agreement with the idea that; if it's my own vehicle, I'll do whatever I like. So, I have very little leg to stand on when it comes to this video.
Except for your personal safety. Dude, put a fuse on that battery wire...right before it connects to the battery. The splices aren't pretty, but they should be OK, since that's probably not a high amp line (I'm assuming the rectifier is inside the alternator, since the PCM was providing voltage regulation).
The real danger is the loose wire flopping and vibrating around. Not a bad idea to zip-tie it down, but I've seen plenty of cases where even that's not enough. At some point, some time, that battery wire will get a hole rubbed through its insulation. Without a fuse on the battery, that's very likely going to catch fire under your hood.
