1993 Dodge Dakota, 5.2L Same issue. Reg went out in the PCM. Installed an external regulator. What an adventure. Had a voltage fluctuation problem (gauge dancing around, flickering lights). Kept messing with grounding (adding, relocating, upgrading, etc). Would fix it for a little while and the fluctuation would eventually return. Finally figured it out. The threads on one of the alternator field studs were munched and I wasn't getting a good connection. Cleaned it up and double nutted the connection and now it's fixed right. So check ALL connections and use a 12 gauge wire from your power source (not a 14 gauge...too light).
I’m currently having this problem. Installed a New alternator then found out a previous owner installed a bypass kit with a 5 prong relay. Overcharging… driving me nuts. 14awg wire is used. I’ll have to try 12awg. If you have any other input I’d appreciate it!

The ECU control of an alternator in newer vehicles keeps the alternator from overcharging the battery. The computer monitors the vehicles current draw and when needed asserts an alternator control line that causes the alternator to provide more current (and voltage) by modifying the field current of the alternator. This basically keeps the alternator from being a constant load on the engine and reduces gas consumption (if one-hundredth of a mpg-I'd be shocked). I have noticed that empirically, batteries seem to last much longer (6 years on a 2007 Nissan Frontier in Pennsylvania).

That alternator sounded like it's full fielding, which means it just a matter of time before the smoke is going to escape.
Great idea, but a wiring diagram should have been followed.
i agree, it's a difference between a constant 14V and a constant 15V, under 15V batteries are gassing....
On my 2000 cherokee XJ :
The Dark Green wire is the generator field, C2 Pin 10, It must be connected with the regulator output
The Gold and Dark green is the generator source, C3 pin 25, it must be connected in a common between the regulator input and the feed from the ignition circuit....
Stripping WAY too much insulation off for the butt connectors.
as someone who does wiring for a living this hurt to watch lol
Brother all I cared about is that it worked
@semperfimechanic in the end that's what matters
