  • How to record rain sounds? - shot in the Amazon jungle and woodlands of North Eastern Romania.
    Curious how I make clean rain recordings without the sound of droplets hitting the microphones? Simple: I build my own roof from locally sourced natural materials.
    Check out this video I shot in Costa Rica where fire ants attacked my recording rig: • Fire ants attack Sound...
    Careful! The roof in question does not keep humidity from reaching the microphones. This is an important consideration if you don't want to end up drowning your kit. More details in the accompanying blog post: mindful-audio.com/blog/record...

    Thank you for this excellent video! I think rain is one of the loveliest sounds, especially falling on the different layers of a forest through a very tall and dimensional canopy of leaves. It’s wonderful to replace the distractions of droplets hitting the mics with a shelter that is much more suitable.

    Hey George! Love your work. I was reading your article on recording clean rain sounds, and I had a question. When you waterproof a blimp, does the inside stay totally dry? I'm just getting started with a zoom h5. I'm wondering if I can stick the whole recorder in there.

      If you do it well, no water permeates it: ua-cam.com/video/yih408QSlwA/v-deo.html. Unfortunately it wears off with time so you'll have to spray it with Nikwax every few months depending on how much you use it.

    Hello from France ! I have been watching your work for a long time. You are an inspiration to me and a legend to me!
    I wanted to ask you a question. How do you make a 5.1 recording? Is it with the DMS that we can do 5.1?
    I saw on your website that you use a double midside (2x mkh8040 and a mkh30).
    And you also use two mkh 8020 omnidirectional microphones but with that you can only do simple stereo and not 5.1

    • @GeorgeVlad

    How do you edit recorded audio? Do you apply any filters or eq? And how are you balancing audio between rain sound and some nature fx. I'm curious because it's difficult for me to understand how to edit nature sound especially when audio has been recorded close to the city, without avoiding city hum noise. Any tips?

    • @GeorgeVlad
      @GeorgeVlad  4 роки тому +2

      They most important aspect is getting a good clean recording in the field. This is why I don't record in places where there is man-made noise anymore. Traffic, aircraft, distant village sounds are all impossible to edit out of a recording without generating more problems or making it sound weird.
      Most of the editing I do is reducing some of the excessive low end that is picked up by some microphones and raising the overall level by a few dB if needed. Only occasionally I will use Izotope RX to surgically remove unwanted sounds like a very distant engine or rooster crowing for example.

    Hi George, thanks for sharing. If I fix the recorder closer to the ground, holding the umbrella and holding it up, is this the right way to do it? I have a tascam x8 and a Beyerdynamic MCE85BA omnidirectional cardioid mic. Which would be better for recording rain sounds with the x8's XY or recording 2 mono mixes with the cardioid mic?

    • @GeorgeVlad
      @GeorgeVlad  11 місяців тому +1

      I don't like the sound of an umbrella in my rain recordings so I would suggest using something built from locally available materials. The mics on the X8 aren't great unfortunately, and I don't know much about the Beyerdynamic mic you mentioned. I would suggest getting a pair of omni mics, something like the Clippy EM272Z1 matched pair, with Bubblebee Windbubbles. Those will work much better for any nature recording.

    Salut George. Caut de ceva vreme review-uri pentru microfoane de utilizat cand filmezi in natura. Asa am ajuns la video-ul tau. In majoritatea video-urilor de pana acum am gasit idei si pareri despre microfoane pentru studio mai mult desii am cautat specific pentru inregistrari in natura. Ce aparatura folosesti pentru video-urile tale? Sau poti sa imi dai idei despre niste microfoane la care as putea sa ma uit? Ma intereseaza doar cele pentru inregistrari video in natura. Multumesc

    So the makeshift shelter helps keep direct constant rain from hitting the blimp, but how do you keep the capsules dry? I can't believe how crazy that trek was through the rainforest. I didn't imagine there would be THAT much mud. Holy cow.

    • @GeorgeVlad
      @GeorgeVlad  2 роки тому +1

      The blimp I was using can be sprayed with Nikwax and rendered waterproof. There's also a type of thin plastic fabric that prevents water from reaching the mics, but these methods come with various amounts of high frequency dampening.
