It isnt a ban. Its a forced sale. It is going after conduct, not content, so it isnt freedom of speech. BUT it has to be worded carefully or it is still a gateway to do it again for other reasons

I will never use TikTok, but I think it should not be banned. I don't need elected representatives to act in loco parentis on my behalf.

Yea it's so dumb to ask for contacts, photos, camera and microphone privileges for something like a weather app. Or location permissions to use a calculator app or solitare game.

I find it such a good sign that so many of you guys who were for the Patriot Act and similar (don't act otherwise, it was the vast majority of you) are finally skeptical of government overreach.
Both the left and right are both two sides to the same coin. Both statist sheep to the slaughter and easily manipulated to serve the agenda of big government and toeing the line to tyranny.
Same, I used to think the right were all idiots. To be fair, it was the Republicans leading the charge against our freedoms up until the Obama years.

I agree a with this take. I think the comparison with the Patriot Act is a great comparison. I don't doubt the legitimacy of the threat the CCP poses, but on the other hand, the potential ways the Tik Tok ban could be used by our own government for trampling on the rights of Americans is, at minimum, at the same level of concern.

i feel the same way, yeah i can definitely see how Tiktok is a problem but same time i feel this is opening a door that really shouldn't be opened by our gov, especially right now.... if ever.

I wish there was an app in the US akin to the Chinese version of tiktok that promoted STEM and arts. An app that's family friendly and showcased street pianists drawing big crowds for their skill, Mark Rober like STEM projects, bite sized history lessons, and everything in between. Something I could let my kid watch without being exposed to compilations of people sucker punching bystanders as a "joke", or something needlessly over sexualized branded "for kids". If someone knows of one let me know so I can delete every other SM I have, because it's way to hard to put blinders up to force the algos of UA-cam, FB, and Instagram into emulating that.
Most social media is like this. I see so much negitive on any site, i recently deleted instagram, mainly cause telling people that wanting a 350k home need to get a real job, thats apparently bullying. But anything you click the comments on, its all negitive. Very few people being nice or hyping each other up, atleast on yt its informative and people seem mildly decent.

The leading buyer when Tic Toc is forced to be sold is Steve Mnuchin and some Saidi investors. The sale is forced over who has access to the data.
I have a simple heuristic. If it gives the government more power the answer is no. As far as the language "foreign asset" it means whatever they want.

John Your right as to what you're talking about. For me, I don't use or watch Tik-Tok. I have too many irons in the fire. There are a lot of other things I can spend my time on,like slinging some brass...

The end of the family unit started it all... mom, dad, children = family unit.
They can fix the problem by making it illegal to sell personal data or personal info. Google included
You also have to think of this from a cyber warfare point of view. What prevents China from having lines in their code that are commented out (not in use) until the right time? Once enabled they get priv escalation on the devices it is installed on and they get most or all data on phones and then aggregate it to learn about our patterns, personal data, etc.
I know someone who works for TikTok. His job is moderating the Canadian version. They absolutely control and censor what those users are able to see. It's fascinating.

In that bill it gives the President sole discretion on what social media platforms are or are not America friendly.
