Windy days on a Vibe Yellowfin 100

  • For my first year back at kayak fishing this past year, I'd like to think I ended up doing ok. I caught several large bass and over a dozen other great fish over the course of the 2023 season, having caught fish on 5 of my 11 kayaking trips. But what happened on those other trips where I wasn't as lucky? Well in this video I wanna show case the worst of the two, both days I ran into insane wind gusts and choppy water that tried to flip me. The Vibe yellowfin 100 is a small boat, not designed for crazy choppy waters, so fishing was very difficult in the rougher weather. But overall, there was also a great sense of stability even on those worse days, where even when I was unable to fish at times, I at least had a sense of confidence for the future that the boat would get me back ok on those rougher trips as long as I played it smart

Nice vid, too bad you missed that toad. I keep my net in the rod holder behind me to the right in the Vibe. Just reach over my shoulder to grab it.

You know I've tried that, and Ive also tried keeping a pole there too, the amount of times ive gotten caught on it during a cast for some reason has been astounding lol. I ended up getting the yak attack paddle holder as mentioned in the other comment, so Im hoping for this kayak season I'll have a better time grabbing the net.

Nice video! The wife has a YF-100 that I snag on quick trips. I Love it! There are a few simple upgrades that make it awesome. I put a yak attack paddle holder on your left rail to hold your fishing net securely and out your anchor line. What it really needs is a rudder!

I have looked at those yak attack paddle holders for that, might have to consider picking one up for this season. Getting the net caught on something lost me more than just that one fish this past year. I also really want to get the Yak attack Black pak. They actually make one in Teal that would match the kayak pretty well. Im trying to keep the color theme going as best as I can lol. I know its bright but visibility is great on the water so boaters see ya far off in the distance. And yeah a rudder would be nice. It would be heavier though with additional stuff, its already a pain to get on top of the car lol, but definitely something to think about. I think I want a Keel protector for the front of the kayak too, so I can drag it out of the water easier and not worry about putting gashes in it so easily.

What was wind speed that day? I've backed out on a windy day before.

Well it was supposed to be no more than 15, but by the time I got to the lake that first part of the video it had to be somewhere around 25 with gusts over 30. And the second one on Hemlock lake it was probably making it up into the high 20's that day. Was not a fun experience in a 10' kayak lol. Especially considering this was my first season back out on the water in 13 years. I went shore fishing later that day I had went to Canadice back closer to home without my camera, I had pretty bad wind burn by the end of my fishing trip.

Those are wind waves, not swells
