Travels by Narrowboat - "Escape To The Country" - S08E04

  • Gooday everyone and join Aslan and myself, as we leave our overnight mooring at Marston on the Trent & Mersey Canal and continue southwards.
Travelling through the outskirts of Wincham and Northwich, we pass a busy canalside boat yard, as well as cruising directly through the imposing (and noisy) Tata Chemical and Salt Works.
Peace soon returns as later we stop at the area of Rudheath and Broken Cross. By now I'm running low on food supplies and take a short walk to the local Spar shop.
With the cupboard and fridge suitably restocked, we then continue onwards for about another 3 miles, to our next stop at the off-towpath mooring "Bramble Cuttings", of the Broken Cross Boating Club - a little, hidden gem, unreachable by anything except a boat.
Here we stay for the next 3 days, whilst I knuckle down to some intensive video editing.

What I like about Kevin's video is that he speaks then pauses let you enjoy what he just said speaks again then pauses for quite some time and that you just soak in what have just Sayed while watching the beauty. Plus he has a very comforting voice. Just wanted to point that out. I love to put it on in the weekend and just watch it episode after episode.

after 10 years UA-cam gongoozling, I got 3 nights on a narrow boat as part of my 50th birthday. Did exactly this stretch ! Freezing cold rain all day, got literally soaked to the skin. Loved every minute. Even stopped at the three bears off path mooring for a bacon sandwich . 3 yrs later, am still listening to r4

Kevin, nice episode, you used a good mix of the scenery, and appreciate the history of the area. Please in the future keep the camera on when you go for your walks in the towns and stores. Kevin! Loving this latest episode! I noticed that in this season, you’re bringing the camera with you on your land voyages to the shops. I love this! As an American everything looks different and is fascinating to me, from the cars to the squiggly lines on the road to the products in the shops, it’s fabulous! It really gives us the viewer a feeling like we’re riding along with the whole adventure! I cook all the time as does my wife, so I’ve always enjoyed your cooking videos and knowing what’s on the menu! 😄 keep up the good work! Happy narrow-boating!

I like the fact that you show the less than beautiful parts of your journey, including the factories, sketchy areas and the graffitti. It gives a more true picture of your daily lifestyle.....which is kind of what I thought this whole thing was all about in the first place. There's plenty of pretty sights as well, and those are welcome, but the rougher stuff completes the impression of what the life is really like! Thanks! Well done!

Nice cruise….I loved that patio with the screened in shed right on the edge of the canal. I would spend a lot of time there! I stopped listening to the news, and fighting and lies, and biased news reporting and politics. We live in crazy days, and it was depressing me…and I am not one to be negative or depressed. That is how I found the UK canal narrow boats and enoy “visiting with friends.” It is so relaxing to watch and share your experiences.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed seeing the industrial side of the canals, especially the old abandoned stuff. I think we all dream of the cut going through open countryside with amazing views and clean fresh air, but when it rounds a curve and you're right bang in the middle of an industrial estate it reminds you that the canals themselves were very much exclusively industrial back in the day. Then two turns later you're back in the countryside!

Kevin, I've been a fan since you first started your journey. It has been great to see your progression. I really felt awful when you ran into your troubles on that New Years Eve. You have inspired me to start searching for a boat to take on the Great Loop. That is a 6,000 mile trip in the US, thru the Great lakes, down the Mississippi river system to the ocean at Florida and back up the intra coastal water way into the Great Lakes again. I live in the USA. In Michigan, between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Around the year you were born I was operating boats for my uncle Sam in South East Asia. I did this for two years and skippered several boats. My favorite was a 45 ft tug. I really enjoy seeing the scenery along the canals in England. I have a "You Tube" channel and hope to post my travels also. God Bless my friend. Safe travels.

Do people cruise the Eire canal or is it just commercial traffic?
We stayed near Akron for a couple days hiking in Cuyahoga last Fall. Beautiful area. Sadly, didn't have time to see the canal and train. Currently editing a video I shot in 2020 of a lock on the Muskingum river during a press trip in the Cambridge area. Should have that up in a day or two.

once more an engaging segment of your show -- there may be those who did not appreciate the departure from the normal picturesque countryside scenery during the run alongside the chemical plant, but, having spent many of my working years in just such grim and cheerless commercial settings, my practised eye found much to process...where I live, in texas, such facilities have a history of massive explosions that take out the factory along with considerable areas of the surrounding town, including schools and care homes -- do hope there's more effective regulation in Britain than here -- so proud of your decision to resume working the canals, Kevin, and am looking forward to the next installment...

Hi Richard. Spar is a nationwide franchise of shops and supermarkets, often found in smaller more isolated places without a supermarket nearby, and in fuel filling stations like this one. The two main types of bacon in the UK are back and streaky, which is thinly sliced pork belly.

I completely agree about the vegan food imitating meat. Weird. Plus I don’t eat any processed foods.
Have fun on your vacation. Am looking forward to Season 10!

Half way thru when you pulled up outside that Pub I thought right he's going to have 6 pints of Guinness this should be a laugh but then you went to a garage.
It was Reginald perrins boss CJ that used to say things like - I didn't get where I am today by looking a gift hores in the bush. 🤣

Call me a stickler for tradition but I didn't get where I am today by drinking Guiness in the daytime. 😉

Looking at the food It reminds me that as a Brit living in Austria the only real changes since the dreaded B word has taken place are my residency status which thankfully now is permenant for me thank goodness and a few food items.
I have lived out of the UK so long now it is rare I miss much but since the B word I have noticed that Heinz baked beans and Pataks are no longer availible in the supermarkets here ( There is a British Shop in Vienna but I refuse to pay €4 for a can of beans!) Thankfully they do a brand called Wild Bill now which are pretty much identical to Heinze and only €1 a pop!
Occasionally I do miss a bag of chip shop chips ( both in Canada where I used to live and here) I have yet to find a decent bag of chips anywhere outside of the UK!
Oh and a pint of good ale but thats not a problem as I drink very little these days anyway and when I do the beer is fantastic as is the wine produced litterally outside my window!
I am glad to see that there is still some large industry going on there. Are there any British car makes left now that are not owned by overseas companies.

You need to lay in some non perishables for the lean times between shops. Canned goods, etc.
