    The irony is this cruise ship company connects to the Titanic: Costa made the Concordia and was purchased by Carnival, which purchased Cunard, which purchased the White Star Line, the company that made the Titanic.

    Also yes the lady in the box survived - if you go back to the section where IG is explaining the blackout, you can see a little footnote on the bottom of the screen that states that when the magician abandoned the stage, he flipped open the latch before he left so she could safely escape. She even “pops out” of the box during that segment.

      "lets spend hundreds of millions of dollars into creating this giant ship... and then spend as little as possible for the people responsible with keeping it safe and operational" I'm sure there is a perfectly rational business explanation for why overall it's better to hire complete idiots to control half a billion dollars worth of investment... but I'm not seeing it.

      @@Fordo007 That's actually very easy to explain, the people picking staff and the people commissioning the ship are completely different and report to different bosses. Neither see the big picture, they simply do their compartmentalized job as best they can.
      So the people commissioning the ship are expected to run up every expense, so they do, and they get congratulated for it because that's their job.
      The staff pickers are not thinking about the bigger picture at all, it's there job to find staff, and if they can get them at a bargain price all the better.
      The right hand does not know what the left is doing.

    Some info on the captain: he already had the necessary qualifications before transitioning from security to captain, the 2 prior accidents were minor ones, he did the sail by as a favor, eyeballing with landmarks in normal (though maybe it shouldn’t be), and his emergency instructions to swing the ship most likely would have cleared the rocks. Not as bad as it sounded so far other than setting the speed too fast for safety protocols, but once the ship struck the rock, the captain was as exactly as incompetent at handling the crash as he sounded. The complacent officers and the newbie navigator had a lot to do with the actual crash and they got off light compared to the captain. They all should have served time, especially the navigator.

    • @RelativelyBest
      @RelativelyBest 9 місяців тому

      It's really unfortunate that all of this was pretty much caused by communication errors because the helmsman didn't know the language well and the third officer didn't relay the bearings like she was supposed to. Honestly, even after the actual crash, if Schettino hadn't been so spineless and actually did his job properly he wouldn't have been remembered as such a huge shithead.

      No he wouldn't.
      Even if he'd managed to steer around the rocks, the only reason the rocks were a problem is that he put them in that situation in the first place.
      If he'd hadn't been lazy about checking their course, if he'd instilled better discipline and communication in his crew, if he hadn't been so cavalier wanting to go closer than he was told was safe, they would not have been close enough to the rocks to hit.
      You don't get to claim someone is a hero and a genuis if they save the day in a bad situation that they themself caused!

      @@sandpiperr He didn't intend to get closer than was considered safe.
      He intended to get AS close as was safe. .3 to .4 miles, and he wanted .3 miles. However eyeballing it and communication errors caused them to end up much closer than he wanted to be. That was the first mistake that you can KINDA take off the Captain's hands, like it's still his responsibility for sure, but it's whoever hired a guy that can barely speak english or italian as the fucking helmsman, and not even an experienced helmsman who's REALLY at fault for that.
      The first mistake (of MANY) that's REALLY and entirely the Captain's fault though is going as fast as they were. That is NOT ok to do if you're anywhere near a shoreline. If you're out to sea, go as fast as you're gonna go, unless something out of your control happens it's probably not going to matter too much. As far as I'm aware there are no speed signs in the ocean.
      Near the shoreline though, come on, there's more shit near the land, that's just common sense. Keep yourself maneuverable.

    Aside from that there's literally nothing a cruise ship can offer that I wouldn't rather experience on land in different parts of the world.
    I'm not hating on sailing. I've only been on one cruise. Carnival cruise ship Celebration. Week long cruise that stopped in Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. Fun trip, nice stops. Ship's cabins were small for our family of 4. But restaurants were great as you could get as much as you want as it's all covered by your ticket. They had a kids program for me and my sister that had fun activities. Had a nice arcade. Pools were crowded, had best pool time in the empty kids pool at the very back of the ship. Every night room service would clean the rooms and give us new towels that were folded into shapes of different animals. So that was a nice touch. Crew were all very courteous and professional from what I saw. Never had any worries or emergencies. Parents went on an Alaskan cruise a few years ago and reported similarly. All in all I'd love to do one again. I mean if the choice was airplane or cruise ship and I had to judge on safety... it'd be cruise ship. Lot more plane crashes than cruise ship disasters. Of course I'd also like if luxury zeppelins made a come back...

    I think the MS Estonia was actually the worst ship disaster since the Titanic

    • @XonWechtvt
      @XonWechtvt 3 роки тому +4

      Technically, Estonia was a ferry, not a cruise ship. But then again, the Titanic was an ocean liner. But I don't know enough about ships to be able to tell the difference.

    • @Tamaki742
      @Tamaki742 3 роки тому +2

      @@XonWechtvt So apparently the difference is that ocean liner is meant for speed? Like more of a transport than a leisure ride.

    • @13dg
      @13dg 3 роки тому +2

      @@XonWechtvt Ocean Liner were made for crossing the ocean for transportation (before airplanes). The faster the best, tho obviously the higher classes still had great luxury. Currently there is only 1 ocean liner still in use which is Queen Mary 2 operated by Cunard (they have 2 other ships but those are classified as cruise liners).
      Cruise Ship is made with the porpose for leisure. Basically they work like a resort where you can either spend some time there (like in cruises that have no stops) or you use it as a moving hotel so you can visit multiple cities without worrying about moving your stuff because the hotel moves with you (like on cruises that have multiple stops on its itinerary).
      Ferry is made with the porpose of transporting people, cargo and vehicles between different places and usually dont have as much luxury and accomodations like a cruise ship, tho for long distance ferries they start having some of both (given that the trip is longer).
      i could go in for more detail but i think this simple way of explaining each one is good enough to understand.

    My thoughts exactly. Cruise lines like this are for people who want to travel, but don't want to experience any culture. "Sure, I've been to Haiti." Honestly one of the best videos the internet historian ever made. With the pandemic, safety concerns in general (not just this accident but people within the marine/shipping industry overall from what I seen and heard are not fans of these giant cruise ships as from their experience they way they are built are not 100% safe), and the way people take holiday are slowly changing, I think cruises may become a thing of the past or at the very least not nearly as popular as they once were. The health and other concerns have been putting people off for years. I went on a few cruises as a kid but my parents were put off as I got older from what has been going on.

      Because it would be easier to stop in a few meters a train going at 300 km/h running on ice than a boat bigger than titanic going on water at 16 knots in just a few hundreds of meters. There just wasn’t enough time and/or space to slow down it of any sensible amount.

  • @RelativelyBest

    Fact I didn't know before this video: "The captain goes down with the ship" isn't just some old saying; it's actually _illegal_ for a captain to abandon the ship while there's still people onboard, because they are responsible for their lives.
    Anyway, what makes this all the more sad is that it was all pretty much caused by bad communication and if Schettino had just done his job properly after the crash - like not trying to lie about it or abandoning ship while there were still passengers onboard - he wouldn't have been crucified for the incident nor remembered as such a massive shithead.

    If you want another reason not to go on cruise ships, look up the Casual Criminalist episode on Amy Lynn Bradley, or just her story in general.
    Short version; young American woman disappeared under mysterious circumstances but the captain and cruise line did everything they could to avoid having to do anything about it before lawyering up, partially because a member of the ship band was a bit sketchy and might have been involved in whatever happened.
