❤️ The Final Countdown! Remember seeing it on HBO in 1981! Don’t know why I remember that! Got the Blu Ray & impressed with it until I saw his 4K review & don’t got the player though when I get one,The Final Countdown is on my 4K list.Glad I bumped into this channel & liked the dude & how he describes 4K so I had to subscribe!

Good to have you here Chris. The Final Countdown isn't one of the best 4K discs but the film is never going to look better unless perhaps it gets a theatrical re-release on 35mm film. The 4K package is a beauty though so worth the asking price in my opinion. John.

I've not seen anyone else mention the out of focus areas in some of the tighter shots but it's likely they don't scream at you so much on a television whereas I thought they'd look worse with a smaller image. Other than those minor irritations occasionally I think this one's just about perfect. John.

John thanks for dropping The Deer Hunter on my radar, I had a showing at the weekend and really enjoyed it. Literally 5 mins ago the Indiana Jones 4K Collection just dropped through the door. I cant wait to see how these look, the set even came with a Kingdom of The Crystal Skull Coffee coaster..... What do you mean that's the movie!! =)

I'll be interested to learn what you think of the Raiders box of four films. I really liked the Crystal Skull. The one I don't like is Temple of Doom which I tried several times but decided to give up on it as I just don't like it. I have Raiders and Last Crusade on Super 8 and nothing is ever going to replace them for me so it will take a real bargain to purchase the same films on 4K.

Now I have to say fellas that Temple of Doom is my absolute favourite. As a kid I saw it on TV in the mid 80's one Christmas and it just blew me away. Out of all the films in the set, Temple Of Doom is the one I really cant wait to see.

@@LeShark75 For Chrissake, it's about *time* somebody else loves TOD as much as I do. TOD was always the weaker of the original trilogy but now the hate on it is getting to the point where it seems like people almost prefer CRYSTAL SKULL and that...that's just crazy talk. For me, it's the one film that's closest to the original serials it was emulating, which is probably why it's "problematic" but that's kind of what gives it authenticity.

This is an incredible channel, I learned about the Panorama vision from another video of yours and got to give my dad a true experience with a curved screen for 2001:A Space Odyssey. He loved it. THanks for this high level in depth knowledge.
He never got to experience the curved screen as a young kid so it was the first time he ever truly saw how it was supposed to look.
This is the kind of channel 50 years from now will be used for historical accuracies and lost knowledge and be seen as a true diamond.

One of the best supplements is the interview with the VF-84 pilots that flew the F-14's for the filming. Also, I believe the 'Zero's were actually T-6 (SNJ) converted to simulate Zero's for the 1970 movie Tora! Tora! Tora! - still, I think, easily the best of the Pearl Harbor Attack films. These 'Zeros' have been around for a long time, and been in a number of movies. Grumman Aviation underwrote some of the filming, and subsequently used some of it in a production named 'Carrier Battle Group', with some cues from John Scott's perfectly fitting soundtrack. That film was shown aboard the carrier Intrepid when it opened in New York City as a museum. It was a documentary and promotion film for Grumman and the U.S. Navy, showing the public the ships and aircraft it took at that time to make up what was then termed 'Carrier Battle Group'. Scott's main theme always fives me goose bumps just thinking about it. I saw the opening in New York City, but always had a bit of a problem with the time shifting element and that silly storm. It took me some time to really appreciate the story itself, but accepting it as is really helps. Thanks so much for the work you are doing - after watching this review I ordered the 4K release, even though I have had the most recent Blu-ray and CD soundtrack since they came out, and do not yet have a 4K setup.

What wonderful information William - thank you! That interview with the F-14 pilots is so interesting and it's easy to see the camaraderie that must have helped them to achieve such wonderful feats while up there with the cameras trained on them.
The Blu-ray in this 4K pack is very good but the 4K is clearly better still. It seems that there are quite a few of us out there that have fond memories of this film and Blue Underground might have a bit of a surprise hit on their hands as a result. The film isn't perfect but it's a sheer joy to watch each time. Some of the best flying sequences ever committed to film - no question about it. John.

The last time I watched this was on Betamax as a kid. In the US it’s available from usual retailers, but is priced a little high right now. Thanks to your excellent (as usual) review I plan to pick this up once the price drops a little. I’ll keep an eye out for the shots where the scope lens was misaligned; those quirks give pre-digital movies so much character!

It's funny, I like to see the odd flaw on a film because it makes it more real somehow. The top and bottom blurriness during tight interior shots is a bit obvious on out small home screens now that the film is such high video quality but they don't last long and I think I only spotted one or two exterior shots where the same may have happened but I probably only noticed them because of the obvious interior ones.
Don't leave it too long just in case they're selling out. I was surprised that WOWHD UK sold out so quickly but it may be because they only allocated a few for us British enthusiasts. John.

I've never seen this, sounds like I would love it. Thank you John!. Mentioning Nimitz - I received the 4K release (from the UK) of the incredibly underrated "Midway" which stars Woody Harrelson as Nimitz. If you want a spectacular disc to show off your sound system it's one of the best available, it has to be heard to be believed, and surprisingly historically accurate considering the director is Roland Emmerich. A must have for any home theater enthusiast. Michael - SA

Already got Midway Michael but I need to watch it again because I couldn't understand the film grain on it at the time... couldn't believe it was shot on 35mm. Then I read up on it and it was computer generated film grain. So I want to look at it again to see how successful it really was and if it's the way forward for films that are shot on video to give them that vital missing element.
I don't think many people would not enjoy The Final Countdown but it is a bit expensive. I'm glad I took the plunge though because it's a lovely pack.

@@moviecollector5920 Emmerich purposely went for a grainy, almost black and white grain for "Midway" firstly to emulate WWII footage and (I believe) secondly not to be compared to the "Pearl Harbor" film, the dialogue is also very much 40's (there's an excellent channel on UA-cam called History Buffs which takes a 2 part look a Midway). I must thank you for your spot on recommendations. Amongst others, Carpenters "Prince of Darkness" and "In the Mouth of Madness" were both excellent and now "Final Countdown'. Michael - SA.

I have this 4K release and echo your sentiments. Actor turned director Don Taylor had an interesting career. His reputation was not the best when it came to features, and he often came in to replace other directors. He made his career mostly as a director for television. Final Countdown was not a big hit and was his last theatrical movie. That said, his "Escape from the Plant of the Apes" is now considered by many to be the best sequel of the original cinema series, and this little gem has gained in reputation over the years. Even "Damien: Omen II" is considered halfway decent nowadays. So, maybe his filmography will be reconsidered as has been the case lately with so many lesser known filmmakers.

If you save the fleet, the US would have still been dragging their ass to enter the war, and Britain would have been on its own even longer. But if you let history take its course, 3000 civilians and sailors will die. So what do you do? Great concept. It is completely unbelievable, but this movie made me believe it. Well done Gerald - Cinema Retro has been addictive from issue 1 so once you start you'll be in for life. I'm still reading the latest issue (after Susanne hogged it for the first couple of weeks!) and I am astounded by how much goes into each issue and how much there is to read. All of it is interesting and I reckon quite a lot of information has gone into my subconscious over the years and comes out occasionally while I'm talking to camera.
With regards to why some of these films only come out in certain markets I think it's down to some sort of certification process that has to be passed for each territory. Apparently New Zealand hardly have any disc distribution now but others might correct me on that. The reason I was given for this lack of a home movie market in NZ is because of the cost of making a film available for sale on disc and not enough distribution to back up all the expense with sales.

I was a kid again watching one of my favorite actors, my favorite jets, and awesome aircraft carriers doing crazy time travel stuff... while Hollywood may be creatively bankrupt and shameless in their courting of 70s/80s nostalgia.... the real deal is ALWAYS a better experience :) Thanks

Only Dr Who seems to have got time travel right. The TARDIS moves in space as well as time. If you sent that ship back to the 1940's by just travelling in time the Earth would not be where it is today and it would end up in open space between stars. Sorry if that spoils some films but Monty Python (though they admit the figures were a little out) mentions the reason in the song "Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's revolving, revolting at 3,000 mile per hour......"

Great. Just saw this so now I had to buy it before it sold out on Amazon as well.
I still have my original 2 disc DVD from like, 2002 or something, and watched it for the first time in about 16 years and I was shocked. This film was an all-time favorite for me in the '80s but watching it now, I'm amazed at how cheap the damn thing looks. Aside from the limitations of shooting in a confined location, it's virtually Corman-esque in how they shoot, edit, and optical everything. Now the story problems I've always had with the film make sense: they literally didn't have the money to do much more than what they did!
Had this been just the 4K UHD with only ported bonus features, I wouldn't have bought it. But the extras sweetened it enough to make me bite the bullet, albeit painfully for the price they were asking.

Murder on the Orient Express is in a league of its own on my system so far but some other 70mm films have come close. Le Mans '66 is the best of the videos but just like 1917, it may look great but lacks that natural looking element you get from a film... i.e. the filmic look. The remake of Midway may be the best in this regard as they put fake film grain in which did bring it to life but I need to look at it again because I spent most of the film wondering what I was looking at rather than concentrating on the film and what the overall quality was like!

HOW HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS MOVIE?! Everything about this sounds absolutely brilliant. I love high-concept time travel pieces. Talking of airplane stunts shot with the real military equipment, have you ever seen the silent movie Wings (1927), the very first Best Picture winner? It recreates World War One battles with the actual airplanes - you know, the kind where the pilot's head is sticking out in the sky, and he just has goggles on. The love triangle plot with the characters is kind of cute and an interesting window into a different era, but the airplane dogfight sequences are just spectacular. I projected them on a 9-foot screen and they were every bit as impressive as the space battles in Star Wars, which I'm sure they inspired.

    • @moviecollector5920

I probably haven't seen Wings in more than 40 years. I thought it was pretty terrific back then and I suspect it will give an even better impression all these years later.
I think you'll like The Final Countdown Craig. It's great fun but combined with some of the best flying sequences ever committed to film, the time travelling element and a really lovely ending. It's also a very nice 4K pack so worth the investment even though it is rather expensive. John.

Can you review the 4k discs for Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge Over the River Kwai?

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 роки тому

Lawrence of Arabia isn't available yet as far as I know unless you have the Columbia Classics box. I can tell you that it should be among the best 4K releases thus far as it's a 70mm production and the general rule of thumb of the larger the film format the better the image quality stands. And it doesn't come much better than 70mm!
A few people have asked for Bridge Over The River Kwai which I haven't seen for many, many years but I remember I didn't think that much of it back then. That's because of the twisting of history which I don't like to see in films but next time I see it in HMV in the cheapie section I'll pick a copy up as so many people are interested in it. This film was anamorphic 35mm so don't expect anything too special but should look better than some of the videos being transferred to 4K disc these days. Having said that there have been a couple of very good videos - Le Mans '66 and 1917 probably being the best I've seen. They just lack that more natural filmic look which is why I want to take another look at the remake of Midway sometime as that had digital film grain added and I was confused at the time because I felt it looked like a video but not quite. I only found out afterwards that it was a computer effect.

Sometimes individual systems don't display discs as well as others. That's likely to be the case here. When you next change your telly or player you might see a different film. The one problem this film does have is the askew 'Scope lens which causes all those blurry interior shots where the image is only in focus across the middle area of the frame. It could be that you're picking up on those and it's adversely affecting the overall impression.

    • @moviecollector5920

Take another look at the film though Josh and look for the misaligned 'Scope lens during many of the interior scenes. That would have been a disaster when that was spotted but re-shooting was probably out of the question for budgetry reasons as well as the fact it was an active aircraft carrier and probably scheduled to be on duty doing other things after a specific date and you'll probably then get an idea why some scenes didn't make it into the final edit. It's likely some of the explanatory exposition had to be left out. But they seemed to get away with the rest of it. The film is great fun but that error with the lens does rather spoil the enjoyment on a big screen.

Great Review as your usual way Mr. John. I watch just for your style and presentation.
Today I bought 'The Shining 4K Steelbook' and 'A Quiet Place 4K Steelbook'. I'm trying to get the 4K Steelbook and the 4K UHD version of the 'Chernobyl HBO Mini Series', I bought the Bluray version but the 4K versions are not available here in India, so I'm trying to import it from USA. I'll be receiving my Chernobyl OST audio CD next week, as after my several requests an Amazon seller in India has imported it from their Europe warehouse.
Mr. John I would like to know about your opinion on the Chernobyl HBO Series, I have liked the series very much since its a real-world disaster and I'm a sci-fi fan. i'm a physical media collector and I believe Chernobyl deserves to be cherished on physical media, since OTT streaming services are taking over and is becoming the preferred norm for the normal movie goer, since its a TV series I'm not sure whether its worthwhile for you to do a separate review on it in your usual style as always, I'm just eager and enthusiastic about how it fares in your visual/audio technical analysis.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 роки тому +1

Funnily enough, the Blu-ray steelbook was a surprise Christmas present and it's an exceptional series. It's amazing how much money streaming, subscription and pay-per-view services are prepared to put into productions like this. I think it's clear to see that television as we knew it is a broken format with everything that's come along in recent years.
The whole Chernobyl disaster could have been so much worse so it's a story I too am particularly interested in. We did get radiation across London and further afield so I don't suppose we'll ever know the true cost to human life. However, we started it all with Windscale (now called 'Sellafield' just to fool the general population) and I expect the clean-up is still going on up there. Then there was Three Mile Island on the US east coast, then Chernobyl and finally Fukushima. Environmental campaigners are forcing us down the nuclear route without really knowing it and eventually one is going to meltdown and then we'll be in trouble.
Sadly I don't think I'd generate much interest in a review of Chernobyl but perhaps I can do a recommendation in a future video.
      John.

I do intend to purchase My Fair Lady sometime Nathan but I can say beforehand that if it's not one of the best videos you've ever seen then someone has messed up. This is because it was a 70mm film so shot on 65mm (the extra 5mm on release prints is for the sound stripes). The basic rule of thumb is that the bigger the film format, the better then final image quality. Most films today are shot on video and it's still a way behind, particularly with regards to colour which is almost infintite on film and a major reason why HDR has been introduced to try to plug the gap a little more. Kenneth Branagh's 'Death on the Nile' expected at cinemas in October will be 70mm so make sure you find a cinema that is still able to screen it in 70mm rather than an inferior video projection.

Great Review as always! Well I remember having seen this movie on the big screen back in 1980. Even though the story is rather convoluted/far fetched, I did enjoy it. Back in the day all movies were shrouded in mystery, no source of information regarding how they were made. I learned about the (very expensive) American Cinematographer review only later in the 1980s. First time I saw books in a bookstore that go very deep into filmmaking was in London, back in 1991. No such thing here in Continental Europe except for books that talk about the philosophy of the screen play and nothing else. I am glad we are living in times where technical information is much more readily available, but I do have fond memories of the times were watching a movie meant watching a 35mm (or 70mm) print.
