  • Research into new heart medicines is being helped by these dogs. The dogs are exercised daily and trained to work with the researchers, by jumping onto weighing scales for example. Heart function is measured using ultrasound scanning, much like the scanning used to see the developing foetus in a pregnant women.

      RemiSynapse Medicines are tested on people after testing on animals. I don't think it would be ethical to test on humans directly, except in extreme situations like Ebola.

      +Understanding Animal Research Sounds dumb because it is dumb logic! I guess because we always thought that was the way things worked, we continued doing so. Hmmm, lets try to figure out a cure for human illness using unrelated animal species. Huge revelation, science for peeps works best by procuring from peeps! Damn, dumb logic, but I guess it really works that way!

    These dogs are being tested - used to monitor heart medicines, so the testing is shown - when the dog is put in the harness and it's heart beats are measured by ultrasound. When animals reach the end of their lives they are put down in the same way a vet would put down a pet, usually by the injection of an overdose of anaesthetic.

    Animal welfare = bigger cages with socially housed animals. Better trained technicians that will train the animals to take blood tests in a calm manner without stress for the animal. Playing with the animals (mainly the larger animals) as much as possible. Providing enrichment toys inside the cage for animals to play with. Ensuring the best possible diets for the animals while also providing regular treats.

    The Dickin medal, recognised worldwide as the animals' Victoria Cross, is an acknowledgement of 'outstanding acts of bravery or devotion to duty displayed by animals' serving in any theatre of human conflict throughout the world. To date, 31 dogs have received this award, the most recent being Lucca who ensured the safety of 1,000s of troops over 400 separate missions serving as a search and rescue dog. On her final patrol, a hidden explosive device detonated underneath her, resulting in the loss of a leg. Thanks to Lucca's skills and bravery, there were no human casualties during any of her patrols.

    In the US, these sick torture facilities get their dogs from a breeder called 'Envigo', recently in the news in mid-2022 when the Federal government seized their dogs for extreme animal cruelty violations. Here's the article...
    "Repeated federal inspections since Envigo acquired the facility in 2019 have resulted in dozens of violations, including findings that dogs had received inadequate medical care and insufficient food, were housed in filthy conditions, and some had been euthanized without first receiving anesthesia. Hundreds of dogs have also been found dead at the facility, according to inspections.
    “Despite being on notice since July 2021 that the conditions at its Cumberland facility fall far below the (Animal Welfare Act's) minimum standards, Envigo has failed to take the necessary steps to ensure that all of the beagles at its facility are provided humane care and treatment and that the Cumberland facility is operating in compliance with the (act)," said the complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia.
    Court records do not list an attorney for Envigo. A spokesman said the company was working on a statement and would have a response at some point Friday.
    According to the complaint, agents from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Inspector General and other law enforcement officers began executing a federal search warrant at the facility Wednesday. As of Thursday's filing of the complaint, 145 dogs and puppies veterinarians found to be in acute distress had been sized, the lawsuit said.
    The government is requesting that a judge declare Envigo has repeatedly violated the Animal Welfare Act and restrain the company from further violations.
    “Envigo is failing to meet the minimum standards for handling and housing the beagles, resulting in the unnecessary suffering and, at times, death of beagles at the Cumberland Facility," the complaint said.
    According to the complaint, the facility has housed up to 5,000 beagles since July 2021. It alleged staffing has been “paltry” and the attending veterinarian has failed to provide and oversee adequate care.
    “Rather than spend the money to meet the minimum standards ... Envigo has employed a paltry number of employees and elected to euthanize beagles or allowed beagles to die from malnutrition, treatable and preventable conditions, and injuries resulting from beagles being housed in overcrowded and unsanitary enclosures or enclosures that contain incompatible animals,” the complaint said.
    It cites a finding from a July 2021 inspection report that found Envigo had euthanized dozens of beagles over the course of months rather than provide care for injuries caused when a body part like an ear or tail was pulled through a kennel wall by a dog next door.
    As for the dogs that have been found dead, the complaint alleges animal care technicians with no formal training are allowed to make the decision about whether a necropsy should be performed.
    Medical records reviewed during the July 2021 inspection indicated that for 173 puppies, Envigo staff could not identify a cause of death because the bodies had already begun decomposing."
    (ABC News, "Feds sue operator of dog breeding facility, seize beagles").

      We are not in a position to comment on allegations of mistreatment and malpractice overseas, where facilities are subject to different laws and where we do not have insight around the particulars of the case. We can, however, talk with confidence about the dogs used in UK research, where there have been no welfare breaches and regulator’s reports show healthy, well-cared for animals.
      Our aim is to show you what life is like for these animals, and show some of the considerations made in the decisions to use them. No one wants dogs to be used in research, and the decision to use them is not taken lightly. This area of research is heavily regulated, as it should be, to protect the animals and to ensure that we gain much-needed insights that can currently only be obtained through research like this.

      Rob Wax Hello, we do 'research' in that we regularly visit animal facilities as part of our work and write up background information such as this: www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/how/understanding-animal-procedures/
      This 'pampered' view seems to me (visited around a dozen labs) the norm for most animal research. The research into transplants I filmed about here: ua-cam.com/video/kNE8drmbo4Q/v-deo.html kills the donor animal, but it does not feel anything. Regards, Richard at UAR

    I am testing for cosmetics I really don’t like but for this it’s being used to treat medical problems that humans have and they’re all all happy and healthy and they will give an anaesthetic and I’ll basically be treated because the whole point of the research is to treat people so they’re going to treat the dogs good

    VIOXX

    • @TomHolder
      @TomHolder 9 років тому

      Vioxx was tested safe in humans which led it to be released onto the market. Trials did not show up the danger in humans clearly enough - animal trials only showed it was safe enough to progress to human clinical trials.

    • @TomHolder
      @TomHolder 9 років тому

      Linda Yarrow If you think animal research is conducted in the same way as it was in Darwin's time you need to get your facts straight. Vioxx showed positive results in animals. Vioxx also showed positive effects in humans (far more humans than animals tested) - that is why it was released onto the market - the side effect is relatively rare (about 1 in 400) but given the huge amount of people taking it the side effect became obvious post release. It was taken off the market at that point because it was dangerous.

    • @Lynmiranda
      @Lynmiranda 9 років тому

      Tom Holder I was referring to animal experimentation as having its roots in a dimly lit, pre Darwinian, creationist world. The premise hasn't changed much which is why pro-vivisectionists think of rodents, for example, as humans writ small. How you took that to mean animal experiments are conducted in the same way as it was in Darwin's time is beyond me.

    • @Lynmiranda
      @Lynmiranda 9 років тому

      Tom Holder Vioxx underwent 6 different animal studies in 4 different species that I know of, which indicated that this class of painkiller was actually protective against heart attack and vascular disease. It had the opposite effect in people prompting Merck's own experts to concede in The American Heart Journal: 'The relevance of these animal models in predicting effects in humans is uncertain.' These words should be applied to all animal models of drugs and disease. As for the human data: 'Company documents obtained in litigation over the drug revealed that an internal Merck analysis of 2 studies showed a 3 fold increase in human mortality associated with Vioxx, but the data Merck supplied to the FDA minimized that risk by presenting the numbers differently.' Journal of the American Medical Association 299:18. The FDA described Vioxx as the 'single greatest drug-safety catastrophe in the history of the world.' It was precipitated by misleading ADMET and efficacy animal models, the data from which absolutely contradicted the human data.

    • @TomHolder
      @TomHolder 9 років тому

      Linda Yarrow I'm really sorry Linda, but you couldn't be further from the truth. The days of seeing mice as little humans is long gone. Partially due to the rise of GM animals (which allow human tissues to be grown in mice), and partially due to our MUCH better understand of rodent biology. There are similarities and differences and scientists take advantage of both.
