Dirk Werner Nowitzki (born June 19, 1978) is a former German professional basketball player who now serves as a special advisor for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. Standing at 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m), he is widely recognized as one of the greatest power forwards in basketball history and is often regarded as the best European player of all time. In 2021, Nowitzki was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, and in 2023, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Nowitzki began his career with the DJK Würzburg basketball club and was selected as the ninth pick in the 1998 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, then immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He spent his entire 21-year NBA career with the Mavericks, leading them to 15 playoff appearances, including their first NBA Finals in 2006 and their sole NBA championship in 2011. Renowned for his scoring, versatility, accurate outside shooting, and signature fadeaway jump shot, Nowitzki won the NBA MVP Award in 2007 and the NBA Finals MVP Award in 2011. Notably, Nowitzki is the only player to have played 21 seasons with a single NBA franchise. He is a 14-time All-Star, a 12-time All-NBA Team member, the first European player to start in an All-Star Game, and the first European to win the NBA MVP Award.
