Ohh Piers , what a truly lovely interview. At 84 yrs I have watched Jane and Chris evolve as people and skating artistes. You do bring out the best and the real side of those you interview. Thank you for doing such a wonderful and sensitive interview, as only you can do.I am still laughing as I write this.
Imagine if the greatest ice skating duo had married. The pairing would've been a match made in heaven. And made one of the great love stories ❤ of the 20th century. A couple of years younger than Chris, I've been watching them since the late 70's. Thank you Chris and Jane for your poetic magic on ice. ❤
What lovely people they are. It is refreshing to hear how much they care about each other, unlike some other duo performers where infighting was rampant. And despite Chris's early upbringing, he turned into a very loving and sentimental man. And no one will ever top their ice dancing performances. No one.
You can take them off the ice but you cant take the ice out of their veins! I was learning ice dance in a way skating 3 times a week and I LOVED IT! Probably amongst THE greatest British sporting heroes!
My favorite skating team of all times! They paved the way for today´s ice dancing partners. A class act all the way. I really enjoyed this interview, and Piers was actually civilized.

I was wowed at their Olympic glory in "84.....Watched and unrelieved 10 years later.. I saw them in Hamilton, after....and was Wowed again! they are my only true dance champions. they raised the bar....keep dancing my friends! Because you were destined to it!! You have brought so much joy!

very interesting interview, it leaves me with the strong impression that Torvill & Dean were soul mates and should have been together but unfortunately Dean developed from a young age relationship issues brought about by being abandoned by his mother at the age of 6. So by the time they reached adulthood, while Torvill was probably wanting to spend the rest of her life with him, Dean wasn't emotionally prepared to commit to or even conduct an intimate relationship which forced her to look elsewhere. Seeing Torvill moving on and getting married however stirred in him strong feelings of abandonment and being unloved from which he quickly reacted by marrying the person who happened to be in closest vicinity at the time despite their incompatibility. So Torvill being a more well-adjusted and emotionally stable person made a success of her life with her less than ideal partner while Dean continued to suffer more turbulent relationships. Now their lives have moved on so far all everyone can do is imagine what might have been. It makes me feel sad but it's comforting to see that they are at least following the advice from a song (I'm not sure who sings) which says "if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with"

It's Valentine's Day and we are all romantics on that day if on no other so we project a love relationship between Torvill and Dean instead of accepting that they apparently are happy with their respective partners. Their impossibly romantic skate to Bolero in 1984 was magical and we wanted that magic to be more than performing chemistry -- we wanted it to be a real romance. I think we have to accept their relationship for what they say it is -- a successful professional partnership of two fantastically gifted athletes.
I have to disagree. I'm sure that they do both love their respective Partners but that doesn't mean that at least one of them has not been/is not in Love with the other as well. Nobody can be 100% certain because we are not in their Hearts or Heads, however I am 99.9% sure that their Relationship has been and/or is still more than performing Chemistry and platonic Friendship from the perspective of at least one of them. It's the looks, the body language, the things that they have said and the tiny glimpses of "little moments" that they have let slip. They obviously deny it to everybody (however a lot of people see through it) for a multitude of reasons and even possibly to each other but I believe that one of them in particular even tries to deny it to themselves. At various times over the years, it's looked like there has been times where the pair of them have gotten a lot closer and the feelings of one of them in particular, looked to have resufaced, only for that person to later appear to have pushed them back down again. Jayne and Chris are Soul Mates and are meant to be together in every sense. 💏💜💜 They just need to stop fighting it and allow themselves to follow their Hearts completely and not their heads and give things a/another chance. Yes, and in addition to Jill missing Chris, they had 2 sons by the time DOI started (one with special needs). It's a shame they couldn't work out a way for Chris to make the money while the sons could maintain stability in receiving specialized educational support.
I can’t stand Morgan...were they more nervous about their 84 Gold Medal performance or by being interviewed by him?!? What a douche! BUT it’s a great interview in that it’s the only in-depth interview with them. And it made me sad...I think Christopher replaced his mom with Jayne, and he may only be happy when he is finally married to her. There is no doubt he loves and adores her! Of course, there is a pretty significant impediment to that happening, so poor Christopher. Either way, they’re both absolutely adorable and seem like perfect partners!

Well, in Karen's 1985 biography she talks about how her and Jayne were best friends and they spent a lot of time shopping and experimenting with make up together. Seeing how their friendship had remained they probably are still follow each other in styles, etc
Re Chris's second wife, Jill Trenary....they say that "the pressure of being away from his family for most of the year took its toll, and he and Jill split up." I suspect that there is more to this story than that. Jill Trenary was a US and World Champion figure skater, she would have understood what entailed preparing for an ice show. I wonder why she didn't come to the UK to live there instead of being separate for that time? Maybe she did want to but he thought it might distract him from his work...who knows...that is too bad. Chris had an absent Mother and here is Chris being an absent father...sad.
There is a bit more. To begin with, T&D really initially thought DOI was going to be a one off - a one season commitment. After the first season in the UK, they were asked to do a season in Australia. When Aus DOI was over, it was time to prepare for the second season of DOI in the UK, and THEN they did their first DOI tour after the end of the second season. Chris was away from home for most of two and a half years at the very beginning. After that, he was in the UK half the year and in the US half the year. If it had just been him and Jill, I'm sure she would have gone back and forth with him, but they had 2 young sons, one of whom had special needs, and moving them back and forth wasn't viable (esp considering the DOI schedule takes place right in the middle of the school year). DOI was a much more lucrative career move than anything he'd been doing in the US. He said in the book, he had to choose between providing for his family and being with his family.

Isabelle had expected Chris to fully retire and become part of her coaching team with Paul (as the Duchesnays were still competing at the time), and only after they were married did she realize that wouldn't happen because Jayne and Chris were massively popular and in demand on the professional circuit. Jill and Jayne became good friends on the tour where they met before Jill ever started dating Chris, and Jill was always 100% aware of the demands of Jayne and Chris' professional career. Jill had retired well before then and was only doing pro tours on and off, so they always prioritized Chris' career without conflict (until they had children in the US and DOI in the UK came along).
