A second hand arts and crafts supply store looks like a great idea! A tip for loose art is to hold your pencil/brush etc near the end so you have less control and then set a one minute timer or something so you don’t have time to overthink the lines and shapes you are putting down. Art is all about playing, experimenting and having fun! Great job!! 🥰🍎
Oooooo I love the idea of holding my brush/pencil near the end. I’ve watched oil painters do that before and have often wondered if it was an oil painting thing haha, but I totally see where you’re coming from! And the timer idea is definitely a good one too. I’ve done that before and while it’s chaotic, it’s fun to see what happens at the end of it. I’m going to give this a try!!
How did you manage to know about an Arts and Crafts thrift store and not visit yet!!! Haha😊 -I love this concept! I have found some gems in charity shops but a dedicated place would be my idea of bliss 😅 - great work with charcoal too - thank you for this lovely vlog and till next Sunday ;-)
I have never heard of secondhand art stores but now I am intrigued and looking to see if there are any around me! I also love how these stores can be very helpful and budget-friendly for art students and for those who are just starting out! 💖❤
Some tips for charcoal: you can lay a toned ground of light gray and use an eraser for getting highlights. Pink pencil erasers are actually pretty good, rough enough to lift. Try making a value scale 5-10 different values of light to dark. Contrast is important.Very dark or very light values help sharpen and define shapes. You have great instincts, excellent apple sketch.
@@ivi122 it's not a thrift store but they do have a number of items which are uniquely theirs! and they're packed! It's basically a full art supplies/ arts and crafts store upstairs, and a full haberdashery downstairs. I consider them very reasonably priced. Some things cost more than Blick - but it's a mom and pop shop that you can walk into to buy things for immediate use. Totally worth it!
I didn’t know of second hand art stores although I have bought second hand art supplies at the goodwill. It’s fun to pick up something inexpensive to try out. Also feeling inspired to try charcoal. Thank you! 😊
I totally agree!! There's something so addictive about art supplies lol, so it's really great to be able to get them at an affordable price and in a less wasteful way. You totally should give charcoal a try! It was so much fun!
Have you heard of Sandi Hester? She is am amazing artist I've been following on YT for years. I think you could probably learn everything you need about "loosening, messy, gestural" feel or skill you're talking about. Definitely check her out! I've learned sooooo much from her ❤
HI! I had no idea you were located in the Boston area! So am I and I took Bonnie's class too in 2023! I would love to connect with you. I want to start a surface designer local community.
I just started teaching myself watercolors a year and a half ago and acrylics less than a week ago and I had no idea that place existed! . One thing though, why are you wearing masks in there? Is it required? If so, that’s truly ridiculous
Isn’t it fun?! I love all thrift stores, and an art supply thrift store is even more magical!! Re: masks, yes, masks are required in this store! I don’t mind wearing a mask at all, and I still wear them on public transit a lot of the time tbh so I often have one with me anyway.
@@pepostudios yes I like thrift stores too! And I feel that 4 years after Covid started it is ridiculous to still require masks. If anyone wants to wear one I have no issues but to require them I have a problem with it
Maybe the owner of the store or an employee there is immunocompromised or has a family member who is at a high risk & they’re taking precautions to keep from passing sickness.
@@laceyace181 until when? No one wrote a mask before COVID really unless you were a doctor or nurses. Covid was almost 5 years ago. Germs are everywhere and masks won’t keep ppl from getting sick. They’re likely germophibic at that store

I've been wanting to go there for a while! Thanks for the cool walk-through
You definitely should go check it out!! It was a blast 🙌🏼
Very cool!
Fun, right?! 🙌🏼
My favorite art shop in town is Play Time Inc in Arlington. It's 100000% worth the trip
Oooo this is a pro tip!! I’ve never heard of Play Time before but I just looked up and it seems wonderful! Definitely want to give it a try.
@@pepostudios it's better than Disneyworld!! But I'm obviously biased 🤣
Is Play time inc an art thrift store too or just a regular art store? If it isn’t a thrift store are their prices reasonable?
