  • Join Abi in our workshop as she replaces one of the inner slide legs on a Bach 50B Bass Trombone. Inside the leg a customer had not only got a huge cloth very stuck, but when trying to remove the cloth they had buckled and damaged the slide so it ended up needing replacement. Abi walks through the main points of this repair.

    I was at the counter picking up my trumpet when Abi was working on this. Fantastic job as always.

    Great job. Fortunately I haven't needed such surgery to any of my trombone slides, though one was almost wrecked after I lent it out.
    Would be really interesting to see how the slide is relocated and soldered back in!

    OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! I seriously can't believe that thing was stuck in there!! As a trombone player myself, that is absolutely shocking!!!!

    I use a rode that has a drywall screw silver soldered on the end. Put it in and turn clockwise and pull. Sometimes it comes out in pieces.

    Hey there! Nice video, too bad you skipped the disassembly bit. That part, which you might think is too boring or long to put in the video, would have been really interesting for me to watch. Miss Abi clearly knows her stuff and it would have been a pleasure watching an expert de soldering the leg.

      Hi, thanks for your feedback. It's tricky as we know we get a lot of drop-off in viewing on longer videos but we do take your point and will consider it in future videos. Sometimes these jobs are quite lengthy though so do need to be edited down for video consumption. Thanks for watching :)

    Jesus. How do you even do that? I guess I'm not one to talk though, I dropped my tuba right as I was supposed to go on for Schostakowitsch 5 and shifted the valve block so I needed a standin.

    As a trombone tutor, I get calls from parents on very similar incidents...usually rags stuck in the slide itself..near the water valve,,,I have to desolder the bend , remove the offending object...resolder...I counsel the students to never put a rag in any part of the instrument...that is why those little cleaning snakes are for...they are mad for a specific reason...

    I once experienced a dead mouse in the tuning slide of an old trombone which my wife inherited from a band. The poor thing, i.e. the mouse, had crawled into the trombone through the bell and eventually got stuck in the tuning slide and suffocated.

    Can anybody tell me what the foam polishing strip is that she finished off with and where I could get a piece ?

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  3 роки тому

      Hi - Unfortunately these grey polishing strips are no longer in production, we're currently trying to find alternatives. In the meantime, the team in our workshop are generally using ragging tape that you can find here: www.dawkes.co.uk/general-repair-supplies/polishing/ragging-tape
