The hobby of railway modelling is a wonderful pastime that can offer so much to so many in numerous different ways.
There are some modellers who enjoy the creation of a beautifully sceniced layout with picture postcard detail while there are others who just want to lay the track and watch the trains go round and round. There are others who obtain their enjoyment from creating a complex layout, intricately wired so that it can run almost automatically, while others desire simplicity and desire a much more uncomplicated approach to building their layout.
Learn as you progress and as time moves on you will hone your skills and keep on learning. Never be dissatisfied with your first attempts as you can always go back at a later date and improve, just as long as the trains travel around the track without derailing or having unscheduled stops all is good

After approximately 38 years of not having a layout. I’m now collecting and planning my new layout in my spare room. I can’t wait.
After 28 years of stopping the project, my dad and I have picked up the project again.
Did you ever get it finished?
How did it go
this is the exact set I gres up playing with at my grandads house on the mat with the scenery
Loving the video's as dusting of an old train set for the kids. Really informative and thorough.
thank for the help
Thank you. Hornby, you’ve proven that you care about the community. Makes daunting tasks, not so daunting
Looks really good need to find space now to try and build a new one for me , not too sure where don’t really want it under a bed would prefer something more permanent
A great help for someone just starting out
I’m just now starting I’m making the blue bell railway I’m basing it off my own version of it also I’m going to make the rev w Audrey’s far quar it will be hard but it will be cool seeing it in someone else’s home
Great tip regarding positioning the buildings
need to drill through the board in the centre of buildings so you wire up some lights for them, the most amazing effect I ever did, makes playing in the dark extra fun. Even if just screwing in some chock block and pulling wires from each one to a centralised point so you can wire them up at a later date. Green and red lights in tunnels look amazing too.
Great layout."thumbs up from me"
Great series for a newcomer like me thanks! The buildings used look really good quality, does anyone who makes these?
Thanks for watching! You can find our range of buildings for your layout here: uk.hornby.com/catalogue/building-and-accessories/skaledale?encoded=JYyxDsIwDET_JhsSCFBZLH4BibGqIjc2adUQR4475O8JMNzy7t3dE-b4QFtgEc1zO-ybe63JWOv4xkxoos3_iZ_bNBYV2oP5gMaxdxM8N0xMPa5gZL8SXC-Dq6LWB3BzykGUqi_94WvA-fgz4fQB
Bachmann scenecraft also, but I’d recommend metcalfe kits, they’re very easy for beginners, and much cheaper than some of these ready to plants
Looks like it's going to be a good and very helpful video.
Great series of How To videos. Advent 18/12/21 Done!
Beautiful video, trains are Amazing
Nice video for beginners. Good work Mike 🤓 💙
it's not just Mike
@@mancity_proximity, OK, sorry, good work team. 🤓
Really helpful video, thank you!
This was a really cool tutorial
Very relaxing building your own creation ,but, expensive
Thanks. I'll need your guide.
A baseboard of 52" x 40" as suggested in this video is barely enough to support a very basic 2nd Radius loop, never mind a FULL TRACKMAT LAYOUT with all the extension packs as is suggested here! You'd need a baseboard of about 72" x 48" at least for this!
Thanks for the info. The video glossed over that a bit.
Wow so smart
Looks fun
Very informative
great video
Very informative video
Could you tell me which Hornby Trackmat fits onto a baseboard of 52" x 40" please, as both of those currently available (R771 and R8217) seem to be much bigger at 1200mm x 1800mm or roughly 4ft by 6ft? And is this size (52" x 40") at least suitable for a 2nd Radius basic loop?
It’s the Trakmat R8217. It says on the corner of the mat in the video. Also the 52’ by 40’ feels like a mistake because I believe he said in the baseboard video 6 foot by 4 foot. And I think the size they said could fit a 2nd radius curve.
You could just not use a trackmat and use your own imagination instead. Pretty powerful dangerous stuff to use but well worth exploring.
Very useful video
So is Sundeala no longer the recommended baseboard top?
Are track extentions conventional for different locomotive of a particular scale, especially those from different companies ?
Excuse me Hornby but what radius does the starter Oval have to be ( 1st, 2nd or 3rd
3rd
Done
Thank you Mr Hornby, but it's on fire, what do I do?
Woop woop that's the sounds of the police!!!
trivia Smith ??????????????????????????????
Alright
What’s the track mat called
Is that a 4x6 or 4x4 layout???
@Tony’s Trains cheers mate
what were the baseboard dimensions again please.
How big is your table?
6’x4’
How much will this cost?
It'll cost what it costs.
If you want something cheaper go scrounge all the bits second hand.
Beggars can't be choosers.
@@Trainskitsetcrude!
Second hand stuff offers very good value, especially on pointwork, making it good for a first layout- usually after a clean and the odd adjustment second or third hand track works excellently- I’ve built an exhibition layout using all second hand track!
I can't afford the wood:/
Christmas competition
Comment added in the hope I may win an Advent calander prize
I think we all know how to connect track together next your gonna tell us how to couple loco’s to coaches haha or how to put rolling stock on track.
Mmmmh who has the money to build this you would probaly lose half the amount of money you have
There is a definition problem with the title ! A "Model Railway" by definition is a miniaturisation of real railway practice. But this programme is clearly dealing with "Toy Train Sets", which bear no resemblance to the real world, as unrealistic toy train "clip together track" and unrealistic track planning is utilised !
That's not actually true, a Model Railway is simply a miniature representation of a real-word railway system. Just because the tracks clip together and the way it's all put together isn't how it would actually be made does not mean it isn't a model railway. It functions the same, it is in fact an actual model railway, and NOT just a "Toy train set".
This is a toy train set, but there are prototypes- there was a horse drawn coal yard in Leicester with a very train set-esque layout
