“Riddle of the Black Cat is a terrific and surprising animated interpretation of Poe’s story that I have to think Poe would have liked in all its aspects, perhaps especially in the protagonist’s urgent performance.” - David Webb Peoples, screenwriter, Blade Runner and Unforgiven.

Very well spotted , @Queen.c - and Mr Rinzler , was this a sort of nod to Alfred Hitchcock , sort of , the way he would appear briefly in all his work - it is a clever , and delightful , tribut to E A Poe . I have just been to your website , btw , and viewed your UA-cam trailer for All Up - it looks like you have written something special , and I will purchase a copy as soon as possible . Anyone who read the book, did anyone notice how nonchalant the narrator was about his wife’s death? And why is she going with him to the basement?
Was he aiming to kill her and the cat that night, but wanted to hit the cat first and the wife second, but maybe he ended up having to kill her first?

Poe's "Black Cat" shares certain similarities with Stevenson's "The Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde".
Both stories revolve around a protagonist whose sanity and humanity is overcome by a dark, inner, beastial temptation to commit heinous acts .
Alcohol releases the murderous brute in Poe's tale.
A chemical concoction releases the brute in Stevenson's tale.
These are tales of the horrors of substance abuse.

also depends on the cultural and gender aspects. Maybe for students from some countries it's too gory and inapprpopriate. In my country girls tend to avoid watching horror films, for example. I would ask my students first and find out their preferences in terms of fiction and film genres. Anyway, as an authentic material it is a great animation, but not universal, so to speak. Btw, I'm a teacher too and I'm going to use this animation for my private lesson. Luckily, my student loves Edgar A. Poe and he is into all this spooky stuff 😄

What i don't seem to understand is how the author want us to view the source of the protagonist's madness. Was he always a psychotic deranged individual whose murder instinct and sway into alcohol got triggered by a cat? Or was he a normal individual victim of some sort of sorcery or bad luck from the first beast that turned his life into a vicious cycle... for if you noticed, the second animal also has a white mark around the neck similar to a rope tie and there is the incident where the author mentions (with witnesses) of the burnt house been intact only in one spot, on that spot was printed the image of the killed cat. So it cant be all in in his head, well i guess.
