  • While it’s common to upgrade the size of a turbocharger for more horsepower, a sometimes overlooked aspect is the rear side, being the turbocharger exhaust housing. In this video we’ll take a look at a simple exhaust side upgrade and see what real world results it produced.
    The car in question is a 1980s Holden VL Calais featuring the factory fitted Nissan RB30 turbo engine.
    The turbo used in this dyno session is the Garrett GTX3582R Gen II tuned by Ben D’Annello of D’Annello Performance and is being run up on Tunnel Vision’s 3000hp Mainline hub dyno.

    Love videos like these that show you the dyno data on the same day under the same conditions then follow it up with real world testing. Love your work.

    I had a GT35 strapped to the side of my dead stock motored VR V6 (manger lol) Commodore wagon a few years ago. Running only 14psi (was limited by the 2 bar map sensor) I couldn't run any faster than a 12.1 with the 0.82 housing the turbo came with. Swapped it out with a 1.06 housing and first pass went 11.98, eventually ending up with an 11.74 changing nothing but the housing. Tune and everything else was the same.
    Obviously response is slightly sacrificed but with a decent converter I hardly noticed it. Does show that exhaust housing sizing is important and even though my car was 2 seconds slower than this VL, I still saw a similar improvement (yes I know 0.4sec faster on a high 9sec car is a much bigger gain than on a high 11sec car, but you get the picture :)

    very interesting comparison, we have been playing with the same turbo but modified by procharge turbochargers in Melbourne but on a Barra, so far made 580rwkw on about 25psi and went 9.6 with the t4 rear 1.16, as happened to this vl we have dropped boost significantly from the factory ford t3 (also ran 9.6) and now need more spring in the gate to get boost up to 30 psi or hopefully more!

    Quick one. That hybrid manifold is doing some work.
    Would you see an increase of horsepower if had better flowing manifold. Ie 6boost, sinco..
    But killer build.

      Is the runner diameter too small for 115hp/cylinder or is the collector design poor?

      @@dannthenitroman well the collector is not as good as a 6boost. Hybrid are just a affordable manifold if people on a budget. Maybe runner length is a tad better on a 6boost... would be a good test tho. M

    for a drag car the lag tradeoff is almost always worth the loss in transient response. For a street, circuit, rally or hill climb car. The choice is rarely that simple, where transient conditions play a much larger roll.

      For street use even a 0.82 a/r housing is too big for a GTX3582 installed in a 3 Lt engine.

    Fantastic stuff, just wish someone would post a stock VL Turbo factory stuff to see with basic aftermarket items like exhaust and blow off valve and exhaust system and tune stock injectors and running on E85 or 98, just to see basically what the cops had back then?

      I did heaps of stocker jobs back as far as when they were new. A dead stock VL turbo will do around 130-140rwkw. With a decent intercooler and around 14psi from the stock huffer they will turn 185-200rwkw depending on the exaust on it. Then its up from there depending on what else you do. E85 will add at least another 30% power depending on the combo. Would run out of stock turbo around 220 odd.

    Actually PDrivetv did a test with a factory turbo with exhaust and intercooler at 8PSI and then 13 PSI with around 150 KW approx, still quick considering most cars just had over 120 KW at the engine at that time here's the link.

    640hp. for an RB30 is absolutely extremely low. thats like daily driving setup. an rb30 can handle well over 60+ psi assuming its the diesel bottom end. so at this point your held down by either fuel or turbo.

      It's all a trade off though, you keep moving the power band it gets less driveable.

      Yea good on ya Barry!! If it wasn’t for vl turbos you would never have a Barra turbo. Took yous 30 years to realise your na motors are absolutely embarrassing so you took holdens idea from 30yrs ago and revamped it with modern technology!! Only reason I support Barra is because it’s a modern version of our iconic vl turbo. Just a shame they (fords) are that disgusting to look at.
