Developing Mutually Beneficial Mentor-Mentee Relationships

Effective mentoring is mutually beneficial to both the mentor and the mentee and plays an essential role in training the next generation of scientists. Helping students learn how to socialize in the research environment can increase their confidence, develop critical thinking and analytical skills and ultimately forge relationships that can become long-lasting professional interactions. Our presenters show how to:
• Identify successful strategies for mentors to serve learners, focusing on those underrepresented in biomedical research.
• Articulate expectations for mentorship, including both mentor and mentee responsibilities.
• Outline approaches for learner empowerment in the mentoring relationship.
