Brioche tuck is a type of stitch family that encompasses brioche, half fisherman’s rib and fisherman’s rib. I’m sure there are more, but that’s why you’re seeing that tag. Not sure if you ended up learning that, but just wanted to respond. I’m knitting the stria now and have added more from this list in my want to knit list!
fisherman's rib and brioche are different techniques that get the same squishy fabric as a result! in both techniques you are working half of the stitches of every row, in brioche you do yarn overs and in fisherman's rib you knit in the stitch below in every row, so it's reversible. half fisherman's rib is the same as half brioche, basically what you do is knit the right side of the fabric in pattern, while in the back you just do ribbing, so no reversible (tho the wrong side doesnt look that bad imo). and i have the same sensation about raglan cardis, i don't know why but i feel like they're always this close to just fall off, so i'm glad to see i'm not alone in that haha will have all your ideas and tips in mind because at the moment i have no cardi in my wardrobe whatsoever and i started to think i need to fix that problem asap. greetings, hope you have a great week!
Thanks, came here to say the same thing :D I was kind of internally screaming "It's the saaaaame!". So yes the techniques are different but the resulting fabric is exactly the same, and there is fisherman's rib = full brioche and half fisherman's rib = half brioche. I love the squishiness and texture but it takes AGES to knit as you need more rows to gain length than normal stockinette.
@@catblues8645 hahah yes i feel you, I think it's easy to get confused because the way you knit them is completely different, but in the end you can use whichever you prefer (minding the wayb you work the incs and decs) and i think that's pretty neat. it is such a drag tho, you can be knitting for two hours and see your garment grow 1.5 cms, really demotivating hahaha
I'm making the Stria cardigan right now and its so so easy. When you do half fisherman's rib, all you do is one row you knit, the next row you knit into the stitch below and then purl the next stitch normally and repeat. That's all there is to it! Brioche is fun once you get the hang of it. I made the Feel Good Shawl my Andrea Mowery and it was my very first brioche project. It scared me too at first, but you kind of get into the rhythm of it and it can get relaxing. You should totally give brioche a try!

I've just finished the Champagne Cardigan in a cotton/merino yarn and I adore it! I am a very large size and her creations have a perfect fit, I'm now half way through the Elizabeth Blouse. It's true everyone seems to be making her patterns, but it's because they are good. I wouldn't say complicated, but rather she doesn't hold your hand with techniques , she presumes you know what she's talking about or are capable of finding it online.
I am finishing Calm Down Cardigan by Lily Kate France and I am absolutely in love with the pattern. I discovered Lily Kate not long ago and she has so many interesting patterns. One subject I would love to see on your channel is vets. I don’t see many vest reviews and they can be such a great staple mid season piece…
I have been binge watching for a few weeks now and am enjoying your podcast so much! I am wanting to make a cardigan for myself soon....I have made quite a few, but always for others. Maybe this coming year [2025] it will happen. Btw... I love this hair length on you. It frames your face so well.
2023 is my cardigan year and I'm on my 3rd one already. I have completed Winter Beach Cardigan and Field day cardigan. My current wip is number 1 jacket.
Just finished knitting my Champaign cardigan a month ago. I put it off for a year because i was listening to everyone talking about it being a slog and i was scared of the double knit button band. I'm so mad at myself for the year i didn't have this gorgeous sweater in my wardrobe! It took me a month to knit and when i was done i have never been prouder of something i knit! It's a beautiful pattern, beautiful cardigan! I am now wanting another one in a dark color! It is perfection!❤
Brioche/tuck is typically a fisherman's rib, where you knit certain stitches in the row below. Brioche itself though is really easy, and I would totally recommend making a cardigan because it's much easier (in my mind) to knit brioche flat! It's like knitting ribbing without actually purling.
I also love cardigan specially when they don’t fall of your shoulders. I’m on my third cardigan this year. I’m currently knitting the KINGSTON CARDIGAN, it sits really nice on your shoulders and it does has the i cord edge. Im loving it. 😊
I just finished the Champagne Cardigan and love it. I’d love to make another in another type of yarn without a strand of mohair. There were so many new techniques for me to learn and the button band was so easy and turned out so well.
I’m enjoying your videos! I have made the Stria cardigan and it turned out really well. It is fisherman’s rib and not brioche and it’s very easy to knit. The stripes are perfect giving a pop of colour without being too busy.
According to Nancy Marchand’s book, Fisherman’s rib is a brioche stitch. Kind of like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn’t a square type of thing! Lol. There are several forms of brioche stitch. Fisherman’s rib is just one.
I really love a v-neck cardigan! It works very well for my frame. I'm so glad you pulled these together. So thank you! I've found after knitting two sweaters for myself, I would prefer a cardigan, because I overheat really easily. And being able to have something open in the front and easy to remove/use as a layering piece works much better than a pullover for me.
I’m currently knitting the November Jacket by Petite Knit and it is Brioche knit (mostly) flat. I’ve only ever knit Brioche in the Stephen West Shawlography which was 2 colour Brioche. This is much easier. It seems, to me, to be ribbing for people who don’t like to Purl as you just slip them❤
This was a great podcast, Tayler. I was giggling over the Brioche/Half Fishermen’s Rib............. I love your comment on Petit Knits patterns, I have an odd body shape, petit but large breasts and freakishly short arms and I would never expect designers to be able to include my body shape into their design. Love this list and glad someone was able to articulate what I love/dislike about some cardigans. Regarding PetiteKnit patterns, I know some may not want to hear that name, but I love her patterns. I love the simple and timeless style of her patterns and several Scandinavian designers and I also love how she/evolve whether it's the style or size. I'm sure you'll love the Champagne Cardigan. I knit that earlier this year and then knit the Agnete cardigan and they are beautiful. The elements of the Champagne cardigan makes the knit so worth it. If there were a way to improve the Champagne cardigan, it would be to integrate the double-knitted button band similar to the Agnete. I'm currently working to see how I can modify that pattern - it's such a beautiful cardigan.
I'm with you on brioche. I want to try it, but I keep putting it off because it terrifies me! I need to just dive in and try a brioche hat or something small and easy.
Jacqueline Cieslak’s Water Born headband is an excellent project for learning brioche. There are links in the pattern to her excellent video tutorials. It features three headband designs of increasing complexity. A companion to her Waterbearer cardigan.
Favorite knit by far that Ive made is the Champagne cardigan. It does take forever but its perfection. Ive already purchased more yarn to make another one.

Love your podcasts. 1) Regarding the button band on Andrea Mowry's cardigan, you could borrow the double knit technique from the Champagne cardi😊. 2) I was able to get gauge for the champagne cardi with Caron super soft acrylic yarn on US 8s and 5s for the button band. Yes acrylic I'm allergic to wool and felt cotton would be way too heavy.
Totally agree, cardigans are the most versatile especially if you are always too hot, then too cold. Like me. Just finished the Harvest Cardigan by Tin Can Knits and have the Bookkeepers Cardigan by Taylor Owen on my next to do list. I happen to have 3 colors of yarn in just the right amounts for that one, so here we go. Thanks for the always great video content!
Firstly, I love your midweek rambles! You make me feel like I am chilling with a friend discussing fiber arts. I am so glad you got the bird buttons; they were super cute. I can't wait to see what you create. I'm still a newish knittter (I mostly crochet), but I think I can handle the Season Cardigan or Champagne Cardigan. One of those might be my first knit cardigan.Thank you for giving the tip on how to determine the yarn weight substitution without the mohair. LOL @ 90s Styles- We are the same age, and it is super funny watching my 13 year old shop as the 90s styles are back and she considers it vintage.
26:19 in regards to your quandary about "brioche - tuck" / fisherman's /half fishersman's rib: I've recently learned that these types of stitch patterns all fall under the larger umbrella of the "Tuck Stitches" category. The "brioche - tuck" tag on Ravelry is a bit confusing because people use that tag for brioche and for any fisherman's rib stitch techniques. But your gut was correct, the Stria cardigan was a fisherman's or half fishermans rib pattern and the other one you referred to, I believe, was also one of fisherman's ribs. I think Nancy Marchant has a book about all the tuck stitches if you wanna do more research. Anyway, hope that helps to satisfy your query if you haven't already found the answer yourself. Great collection of cardigans!! I started maybe about 13 years ago slowly replacing all my store bought favourites with handknits. It’s a slow process but well worth it 💚
I recently finished the Field Day Cardigan by Ozetta and I can say, hands down!, it is the most wonderful cardigan I've ever owned or knit. The construction is ingenious and so well-thought-out. It is structured but not overly so, and with so many classic details. It also sold me completely on knitting the button band as you go to integrate it into the flow of the body lines and is just *chef's kiss* perfection because it makes it so sturdy. Can't recommend highly enough
I finished the Pressed Flowers cardigan by Savory Knits last month and I love it! Even though mine is rainbow-colored because of the spincycle yarn, I still find that I am able to wear it with a lot of different outfits. It's almost like rainbow is a neutral. :)
The stria cardigan has been on my list for awhile. I would probably do a single color for the stripe. The Kingston will definitely be made. I’m always cold at work and I’m always looking for a nice cardigan to go with my dresses
I am giggling over here at the last section. I love that I'm not alone in feeling overwhelmed while looking up knitting techniques. Also, love the Empire Records reference! Hi! I also feel confused with Ravelry tags, they don't have tags for half fisherman's rib or only brioche, so all patterns with stitches that look like a fluffy rib, uses the tag brioche-tuck. So join the team! 😂 If is of any help, tuck is a reference to stiches worked in one ore more rows below the one you are currently knitting. Go ahead and try brioche stitch, you will love it! Begin with one-color and knitted flat, from that you will only want to have brioche projects on your needles. Love your videos, thank you for all of them 😍❤
I'm currently knitting a hat in fisherman's rib and have been wondering about the differences between fisherman's rib, half fisherman's rib and English rib. Toss in the brioche tuck you mentioned in this video. I haven't found a reasonable answer yet.

I made the Galloway five years ago now (wow!) in the same color palette as the blue sample as I was also in love with it! I was a newer knitter then and didn't quite understand ease, so I made a size with only 3" ease instead of the 7" shown on the model. So it does indeed fall off my shoulders a bit! However, I still love it so much. It was fun to knit, you should totally go for it!!
Appreciate your thoughts on the falling of the shoulder issue… will definitely keep an eye on that. I prefer a crew neck, but the shoulder and button band things are also super important!
Brioche is a skill-technique that I have on my to learn list for the coming year. I don´t actually see a ton of projects with it (except for some hats and a couple of shawls) that I am interested in, but it is a stitch technique worth knowing. I like the Galloway and the Ozetta cardis very much. I plan to cast on a cardigan using fisherman´s rib in Palette yarn soon (after I finish some WIPs of course). I love cardigans. They are essential wardrobe items for me, and I would love one in every color of the rainbow (that´s how much I like and use them).
Like you, I've avoided brioche. Not because I think it's complicated, but simply haven't had the need to as yet. Thanks for this video. Definitely a few cardigans that piqued my interest. PS your longer hair looks amazing. 🥰
I am big on cardigans! I get cold quick! as a costumer/knitter, sweaters falling from your shoulders has also to do with the width of your shoulders and how your posture is (anatomy makes a difference) Folk need to do correct measurements especially across the front shoulder to shoulder, and back shoulder to shoulder. two different measurements!
I'm not a brioche knitter. But, The Sockmatician has a video out where he makes doing brioche a lot easier. No going across twice for each row. I'm not sure how he does it, but he is a genius at knitting. I like all the cardigans you showed. I don't wear cardigans like that just because they do fall off the shoulder and when I need to pull it shut for warmth, you can't. I like the standard cardigan that buttons all the way to the neck. Another great and helpful podcast. I am going to look at the Season's cardigan.

some beautiful patterns! I was super intimidated by brioche too but then I made the Sleigh All Day Wrap by Lofty Loops which has a lot of short brioche sections and it helped my confidence so much!
I'm watching this wearing a cardigan I just finished that falls off my shoulders and it's super annoying! I do have a heavily modified Champagne Cardigan that I knit in a wild Hedgehog Fibres DK weight yarn and I do love it though! Some other lovely options here too.
Such a well explained, well produced video (as always)! I think the 'Incline Decline' cardigan by Purl Soho is an interesting construction. It's more of an open front cardigan but it definitely looks like it sits nice and flat! Using the recommended yarn would make the softest sweater I could ever imagine.

You had me at Empire Records! Saw the movie when it came out and loved everything Liv wore in the movie. So what if the sweater was on Rene. I prefer Liv's outfits. And yes the Kingston is a great looking cropped choice.
I love cardigans as well, they are easy layering pieces and also easy ti take off if the temperature happens to rise during the day. A sidenote, letter j in Meiju and Maja is pronounced pretty much like y in English.
I get it. Honestly, sometimes it's not even about improving/broadening our skill set. Sometimes it's just about knowing what we like and sticking to it. And that's really cool and very liberating.

From my understanding, brioche and fisherman’s rib are very similar in final appearance, the big difference is in construction. You’re either using yarn overs or using stitches into lower rows to group together two vertical stitches. Same goes for half brioche and half fisherman’s rib.
yep, they're essentially the same stitch, just achieved in a different way, and the difference in the method typically results in a different gauge. but they're the same stitch.
Like your selections a lot. I knitted a pullover from the Contrasts book by Meiju. I knitted another one of her patterns from ravelry. Her patterns are very well written and sized well. I've been eyeballing the Maja cardigan. I knitted the Stria. It is half fisherman's rib. I'm also confused when it's described as some sort of brioche.
Not sure why people love to hate on PetiteKnit patterns because the Champaign Cardigan is EVERYTHING! I love the Seasons Cardigan and Kingston Cardigan as well! Ugh, looks like I'll be adding to my ever-growing "things I NEED to knit" list :)

And I think it’s not so much anything to do with PetiteKnit or her patterns, but more just the fact that so many podcasters are sharing her patterns so often. I think people are just sort of tired of hearing about PetiteKnit all the time. But like I said, it’s for good reason. 😉❤️
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS It's exactly this. I like Petite Knit, i've made her Novice Cardigan, but it's really tiring to hear about the same like 5 designers from absolutely everyone lol. Especially because it seems like everyone makes Petite Knit patterns in neutrals. Which I understand, it's wearable, it's classic, but I can only see the same beige basic cardigan/sweater/sophie scarf before my eyes cross. And I LOVE beige lmao. It's more an issue of there being a lack of stylistic variation in the online knitting community.
When you add a pattern to Ravelry as a designer it give you a list of tags for the techniques used in the piece. You want to be precise as possible but also the list is somewhat limiting. So you pick the thing that is closest to what the technique used is. “Brioche-“Tuck” covers all techniques that result in a fabric that looks like that. As for the look: you can substitute brioche stitches for fisherman’s rib stitches if you prefer the way it is worked. The look will be very much the same. Both techniques create a “shawled stitch” that is a piece of the yarn wrapped around the stitch when you work it in the next row. It makes sense when you look at the stitches of the fabric. In brioche the extra yarn over is dropped and wrapping itself around the stitch, in fisherman’s rib it is the “Dropped” stitch that results when you knit into the stitch below. Hope this helps and doesn’t just make sense in my head!
I like the Champagne cardigan then saw the Darling cardigan with same type of double knitted button band but a bit more feminine look by Veronika Lindberg. she also has a tutorial - especially for the button band construction would be nice. Snap or button holes an option. So will have to decide which one?
You missed Aimee Sher’s building blocks drop cardigan! I knit one and it’s lovely. It has some beautiful hem options and lots of shaping. I also want to knit the portage cardigan.

WRT brioche, I used to watch a channel by a young French woman (in excellent English) who has designs on Ravelry under the name beecharly. She was adamant brioche was easy, in fact I remember her saying at one point that it was the first way to knit she was taught. I tried to find the video but she has taken much of her content down unfortunately. She does still have some brioche instruction videos (Charlotte and Gus channel) and under one of her designs on Rav (the Tipi shawl) she describes brioche as "...a piece of cake! (pun intended)." That said, I still haven't tried it either....
Brioche that is something I bake in my claypot from time to time. In Swedish it is patent knitting, and half patent knit, and ... brioche. I do not like the way it tends to look much, so I knitted a cardigan in "half whatever" for DD, but rarely otherwise, but I guess it would be fun to try out ...
I feel like I've heard other podcasters talk about frustration with the seasons cardigan...I'm pretttyyyyy sure the button band is knit as you go, but on smaller needles so like separate dpns or something switching every row? I could be wrong but that has put me off of knitting that amazing looking pattern. I have made her field day Cardigan which is stockinette with a knit as you go (with same needle!) And it's lovely. I do have my eyes on a fisherman's rib tho!

The Stria has so much going for it, it reminds me of a non-cardigan I have fallen for by PetiteKnit called The Friday Tee, and the project I especially love is by TinyHumanKnits. Speaking of, is it possible to say a word about any controversy surrounding PetiteKnit without inviting the flamethrowing? I honestly don't know about this and now I wonder what. I think you have identified the absolute essentials of what cardigans should feature. You had me at "button band sturdiness."

I’m curious, why not any cardigans that have set in sleeves? If you’re a larger busted gal, raglan sleeves are not always the most flattering. That being said, your selections are beautiful!
I didn’t make a concisions effort here to include all the construction styles. I just sort of compiled my top 7 based on what struck my fancy. However a good set-in sleeve is beautiful! I may need to do a future video with more construction variety. Thank you for mentioning it. ❤️
I was determined to make the Satellite shawl and that required learning brioche. I’m relatively new to knitting (only a couple years in) and I was able to do it by following the Nancy Marchant lessons on Craftsy on Brioche (recommended by Andrea Mowry). It was hard, and I made a really ugly sampler that I had to tear back multiple times, but it was systematic and thorough and by the time I got through it I could brioche. The satellite shawl was a piece of cake after that sampler 😂 it’s actually really fun!

2023 is my cardigan year and I'm on my 3rd one already. I have completed Winter Beach Cardigan and Field day cardigan. My current wip is number 1 jacket.
Just finished knitting my Champaign cardigan a month ago. I put it off for a year because i was listening to everyone talking about it being a slog and i was scared of the double knit button band. I'm so mad at myself for the year i didn't have this gorgeous sweater in my wardrobe! It took me a month to knit and when i was done i have never been prouder of something i knit! It's a beautiful pattern, beautiful cardigan! I am now wanting another one in a dark color! It is perfection!❤

Brioche/tuck is typically a fisherman's rib, where you knit certain stitches in the row below. Brioche itself though is really easy, and I would totally recommend making a cardigan because it's much easier (in my mind) to knit brioche flat! It's like knitting ribbing without actually purling.
I've also seen and heard knitters reinforce the button bands with grosgrain ribbon. I get it if it's not to everyone's liking but also an option.

I just finished the Champagne Cardigan and love it. I’d love to make another in another type of yarn without a strand of mohair. There were so many new techniques for me to learn and the button band was so easy and turned out so well.
I’m enjoying your videos! I have made the Stria cardigan and it turned out really well. It is fisherman’s rib and not brioche and it’s very easy to knit. The stripes are perfect giving a pop of colour without being too busy.

According to Nancy Marchand’s book, Fisherman’s rib is a brioche stitch. Kind of like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn’t a square type of thing! Lol. There are several forms of brioche stitch. Fisherman’s rib is just one.
I really love a v-neck cardigan! It works very well for my frame. I'm so glad you pulled these together. So thank you! I've found after knitting two sweaters for myself, I would prefer a cardigan, because I overheat really easily. And being able to have something open in the front and easy to remove/use as a layering piece works much better than a pullover for me.

I’m currently knitting the November Jacket by Petite Knit and it is Brioche knit (mostly) flat. I’ve only ever knit Brioche in the Stephen West Shawlography which was 2 colour Brioche. This is much easier. It seems, to me, to be ribbing for people who don’t like to Purl as you just slip them❤

I love your comment on Petit Knits patterns, I have an odd body shape, petit but large breasts and freakishly short arms and I would never expect designers to be able to include my body shape into their design. I love the effect of brioche and I find the brioche stitch easy to knit, but Lordy… mistakes are almost IMPOSSIBLE to fix! 😱

The April Cardigan by Petite K is similar to the Champagne but the button band stitches are picked up. Lace w/fingering (DK).

Love this list and glad someone was able to articulate what I love/dislike about some cardigans. Regarding PetiteKnit patterns, I know some may not want to hear that name, but I love her patterns. I love the simple and timeless style of her patterns and several Scandinavian designers and I also love how she/evolve whether it's the style or size. I'm sure you'll love the Champagne Cardigan. I knit that earlier this year and then knit the Agnete cardigan and they are beautiful. The elements of the Champagne cardigan makes the knit so worth it. If there were a way to improve the Champagne cardigan, it would be to integrate the double-knitted button band similar to the Agnete. I'm currently working to see how I can modify that pattern - it's such a beautiful cardigan.
I'm with you on brioche. I want to try it, but I keep putting it off because it terrifies me! I need to just dive in and try a brioche hat or something small and easy.
Jacqueline Cieslak’s Water Born headband is an excellent project for learning brioche. There are links in the pattern to her excellent video tutorials. It features three headband designs of increasing complexity. A companion to her Waterbearer cardigan.

Favorite knit by far that Ive made is the Champagne cardigan. It does take forever but its perfection. Ive already purchased more yarn to make another one.

Hi! Love your podcasts. 1) Regarding the button band on Andrea Mowry's cardigan, you could borrow the double knit technique from the Champagne cardi😊. 2) I was able to get gauge for the champagne cardi with Caron super soft acrylic yarn on US 8s and 5s for the button band. Yes acrylic I'm allergic to wool and felt cotton would be way too heavy.

Just finished the Harvest Cardigan by Tin Can Knits and have the Bookkeepers Cardigan by Taylor Owen on my next to do list. I happen to have 3 colors of yarn in just the right amounts for that one, so here we go. Thanks for the always great video content!

26:19 in regards to your quandary about "brioche - tuck" / fisherman's /half fishersman's rib: I've recently learned that these types of stitch patterns all fall under the larger umbrella of the "Tuck Stitches" category. The "brioche - tuck" tag on Ravelry is a bit confusing because people use that tag for brioche and for any fisherman's rib stitch techniques. But your gut was correct, the Stria cardigan was a fisherman's or half fishermans rib pattern and the other one you referred to, I believe, was also one of fisherman's ribs. I think Nancy Marchant has a book about all the tuck stitches if you wanna do more research. Anyway, hope that helps to satisfy your query if you haven't already found the answer yourself.

I recently finished the Field Day Cardigan by Ozetta and I can say, hands down!, it is the most wonderful cardigan I've ever owned or knit. The construction is ingenious and so well-thought-out. It is structured but not overly so, and with so many classic details. It also sold me completely on knitting the button band as you go to integrate it into the flow of the body lines and is just *chef's kiss* perfection because it makes it so sturdy. Can't recommend highly enough
I finished the Pressed Flowers cardigan by Savory Knits last month and I love it! Even though mine is rainbow-colored because of the spincycle yarn, I still find that I am able to wear it with a lot of different outfits. It's almost like rainbow is a neutral. :)

The stria cardigan has been on my list for awhile. I would probably do a single color for the stripe. The Kingston will definitely be made. I’m always cold at work and I’m always looking for a nice cardigan to go with my dresses

Hi! I also feel confused with Ravelry tags, they don't have tags for half fisherman's rib or only brioche, so all patterns with stitches that look like a fluffy rib, uses the tag brioche-tuck. So join the team! 😂 If is of any help, tuck is a reference to stiches worked in one ore more rows below the one you are currently knitting. Go ahead and try brioche stitch, you will love it! Begin with one-color and knitted flat, from that you will only want to have brioche projects on your needles.

I'm currently knitting a hat in fisherman's rib and have been wondering about the differences between fisherman's rib, half fisherman's rib and English rib. Toss in the brioche tuck you mentioned in this video. I haven't found a reasonable answer yet.

I made the Galloway five years ago now (wow!) in the same color palette as the blue sample as I was also in love with it! I was a newer knitter then and didn't quite understand ease, so I made a size with only 3" ease instead of the 7" shown on the model. So it does indeed fall off my shoulders a bit! However, I still love it so much. It was fun to knit, you should totally go for it!!
Appreciate your thoughts on the falling of the shoulder issue… will definitely keep an eye on that. I prefer a crew neck, but the shoulder and button band things are also super important!
Brioche is a skill-technique that I have on my to learn list for the coming year. I don´t actually see a ton of projects with it (except for some hats and a couple of shawls) that I am interested in, but it is a stitch technique worth knowing. I like the Galloway and the Ozetta cardis very much. I plan to cast on a cardigan using fisherman´s rib in Palette yarn soon (after I finish some WIPs of course). I love cardigans. They are essential wardrobe items for me, and I would love one in every color of the rainbow (that´s how much I like and use them).
Like you, I've avoided brioche. Not because I think it's complicated, but simply haven't had the need to as yet. Thanks for this video. Definitely a few cardigans that piqued my interest. PS your longer hair looks amazing. 🥰

I am big on cardigans! I get cold quick! as a costumer/knitter, sweaters falling from your shoulders has also to do with the width of your shoulders and how your posture is (anatomy makes a difference) Folk need to do correct measurements especially across the front shoulder to shoulder, and back shoulder to shoulder. two different measurements!

I'm not a brioche knitter. But, The Sockmatician has a video out where he makes doing brioche a lot easier. No going across twice for each row. I'm not sure how he does it, but he is a genius at knitting. I like all the cardigans you showed. I don't wear cardigans like that just because they do fall off the shoulder and when I need to pull it shut for warmth, you can't. I like the standard cardigan that buttons all the way to the neck. Another great and helpful podcast. I am going to look at the Season's cardigan.

some beautiful patterns! I was super intimidated by brioche too but then I made the Sleigh All Day Wrap by Lofty Loops which has a lot of short brioche sections and it helped my confidence so much!

I'm watching this wearing a cardigan I just finished that falls off my shoulders and it's super annoying! I do have a heavily modified Champagne Cardigan that I knit in a wild Hedgehog Fibres DK weight yarn and I do love it though! Some other lovely options here too.
Such a well explained, well produced video (as always)! I think the 'Incline Decline' cardigan by Purl Soho is an interesting construction. It's more of an open front cardigan but it definitely looks like it sits nice and flat! Using the recommended yarn would make the softest sweater I could ever imagine.

I love cardigans as well, they are easy layering pieces and also easy ti take off if the temperature happens to rise during the day. A sidenote, letter j in Meiju and Maja is pronounced pretty much like y in English.

I get it. Honestly, sometimes it's not even about improving/broadening our skill set. Sometimes it's just about knowing what we like and sticking to it. And that's really cool and very liberating.

I want to make a cardigan with set-in sleeves that looks up-to-date. Looking for a pattern that also has your firm button band criterion.
From my understanding, brioche and fisherman’s rib are very similar in final appearance, the big difference is in construction. You’re either using yarn overs or using stitches into lower rows to group together two vertical stitches. Same goes for half brioche and half fisherman’s rib.
yep, they're essentially the same stitch, just achieved in a different way, and the difference in the method typically results in a different gauge. but they're the same stitch.

Like your selections a lot. I knitted a pullover from the Contrasts book by Meiju. I knitted another one of her patterns from ravelry. Her patterns are very well written and sized well. I've been eyeballing the Maja cardigan. I knitted the Stria. It is half fisherman's rib. I'm also confused when it's described as some sort of brioche.
Not sure why people love to hate on PetiteKnit patterns because the Champaign Cardigan is EVERYTHING! I love the Seasons Cardigan and Kingston Cardigan as well! Ugh, looks like I'll be adding to my ever-growing "things I NEED to knit" list :)

@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS It's exactly this. I like Petite Knit, i've made her Novice Cardigan, but it's really tiring to hear about the same like 5 designers from absolutely everyone lol. Especially because it seems like everyone makes Petite Knit patterns in neutrals. Which I understand, it's wearable, it's classic, but I can only see the same beige basic cardigan/sweater/sophie scarf before my eyes cross. And I LOVE beige lmao. It's more an issue of there being a lack of stylistic variation in the online knitting community.
When you add a pattern to Ravelry as a designer it give you a list of tags for the techniques used in the piece. You want to be precise as possible but also the list is somewhat limiting. So you pick the thing that is closest to what the technique used is. “Brioche-“Tuck” covers all techniques that result in a fabric that looks like that.
As for the look: you can substitute brioche stitches for fisherman’s rib stitches if you prefer the way it is worked. The look will be very much the same. Both techniques create a “shawled stitch” that is a piece of the yarn wrapped around the stitch when you work it in the next row. It makes sense when you look at the stitches of the fabric. In brioche the extra yarn over is dropped and wrapping itself around the stitch, in fisherman’s rib it is the “Dropped” stitch that results when you knit into the stitch below. Hope this helps and doesn’t just make sense in my head!

I like the Champagne cardigan then saw the Darling cardigan with same type of double knitted button band but a bit more feminine look by Veronika Lindberg. she also has a tutorial - especially for the button band construction would be nice. Snap or button holes an option. So will have to decide which one?
You missed Aimee Sher’s building blocks drop cardigan! I knit one and it’s lovely. It has some beautiful hem options and lots of shaping. I also want to knit the portage cardigan.

WRT brioche, I used to watch a channel by a young French woman (in excellent English) who has designs on Ravelry under the name beecharly. She was adamant brioche was easy, in fact I remember her saying at one point that it was the first way to knit she was taught. I tried to find the video but she has taken much of her content down unfortunately. She does still have some brioche instruction videos (Charlotte and Gus channel) and under one of her designs on Rav (the Tipi shawl) she describes brioche as "...a piece of cake! (pun intended)."
That said, I still haven't tried it either....
The Galloway reminds me of sweaters my Danish grandmother made me.
Brioche that is something I bake in my claypot from time to time.
In Swedish it is patent knitting, and half patent knit, and ... brioche. I do not like the way it tends to look much, so I knitted a cardigan in "half whatever" for DD, but rarely otherwise, but I guess it would be fun to try out ...

I feel like I've heard other podcasters talk about frustration with the seasons cardigan...I'm pretttyyyyy sure the button band is knit as you go, but on smaller needles so like separate dpns or something switching every row? I could be wrong but that has put me off of knitting that amazing looking pattern. I have made her field day Cardigan which is stockinette with a knit as you go (with same needle!) And it's lovely. I do have my eyes on a fisherman's rib tho!

I’m curious, why not any cardigans that have set in sleeves? If you’re a larger busted gal, raglan sleeves are not always the most flattering. That being said, your selections are beautiful!
I didn’t make a concisions effort here to include all the construction styles. I just sort of compiled my top 7 based on what struck my fancy. However a good set-in sleeve is beautiful! I may need to do a future video with more construction variety. Thank you for mentioning it. ❤️

I was determined to make the Satellite shawl and that required learning brioche. I’m relatively new to knitting (only a couple years in) and I was able to do it by following the Nancy Marchant lessons on Craftsy on Brioche (recommended by Andrea Mowry). It was hard, and I made a really ugly sampler that I had to tear back multiple times, but it was systematic and thorough and by the time I got through it I could brioche. The satellite shawl was a piece of cake after that sampler 😂 it’s actually really fun!
