Watch U2 Accept Their First-Ever GRAMMY In 1988 | GRAMMY Rewind

- Back in 1988, Irish rock icons U2 were a favorite rising act of college radio DJs and Bono had yet to discover his love of sunglasses. It was also the year the group earned their first-ever GRAMMY nominations and took home their first two wins, for their epic 'The Joshua Tree' album.
For the latest episode of GRAMMY Rewind, revisit the "With Or Without You" act's first-ever GRAMMY win, for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. They also took home the esteemed Album Of The Year for 'The Joshua Tree' that evening as well. To date, U2 has earned 22 golden gramophones over the years, most recently for 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' in 2006.

MJ was a child star who grew up in the music business. U2 worked their way up through Dublin streets, European bars, American clubs, and eventually larger venues. They are the complete and total embodiment of passion and perseverance in rock music during a time when pop was taking over. The Joshua Tree made good on the promise that rock could still change and rule the world forever
Love this, completely agree. U2 forever. Walk on!
Ok, YES, but please lets not treat MJ like "just" a child star. He was the hardest working child, literally no childhood. He and the J5 worked their way up too from Gary, Indiana, sharing beds. They performed in bars and clubs too (no place for a child), worked their way up to larger venues, was abused by his father, THEN got signed to Motown, and the rest is history. It wasn't a cake walk to the Jacksons or U2. MJ should have won a Grammy that year, and everyone knows it. Still, I won't take away from U2's success.
You're acting like MJ never worked his way up either. He was probably one of the most or even the most hard-working person in the music/entertainment industry and it quite literally cost him his life.
@@wimpundgirl exactly 😭 I read this comment like wth...??
I just meant that MJ was already very well established by the 80s and there were other artists who made similar music, whereas bands like U2 were still developing their sound and stood out more
This was 36 years ago you still can't let it go
MORE GRAMMY REWINDS PLEASE
Joshua Tree was a well-deserved win! Not a single song on That atmospheric album was bad.
In the description it says: “... Bono had yet to discover his love of sunglasses.”, which is somewhat incorrect. He needs the tinted glasses for his chronic eye condition named glaucoma, which makes his eyes over sensitive to light. I believe he was diagnosed as far back as the mid nineties. I suppose it fits his rock star image, however that simply is not the reasoning for this 😎🤷🏻♂️🤩
Maturing is understanding Joshua Tree wasn’t just an album but a spiritual trip that they were able to create for the audience. Deserved album of the year.
Wow, Bono didn't say a word.
I think they knew that wasn't their last award for the night, he spoke after the Album of the Year.
I can’t get over the fact that edge said “Batman and Robin”🤣
Love U2 so so much❤️❤️
My favourite band forever!❤️❤️
The band’s nickname for Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois was Batman & Robin It might be who they were referring to…
Very interesting list 👍 Bravo 👏
"Sign O the Times" deserved that Grammy. But It's is amazing too.
Bad is only a commercial product.
joshua tree was the worst album in the category tbh. bad should’ve easily taken it
Pode aparecer uma banda de rock igual ao U2, melhor jamais; cara vocês são os melhores dos melhores...GOD bless Irish nation.
🎵 Excellent 👍👏
min 0:17 Bono leans in for the kiss..... WHOA!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! U2 😁❤😁❤😁😁❤😁❤😁❤❤😁🏆🏆🏆🏆
Sign O the times should have won the Grammy
Very good work
Prince should’ve won.
min.0:18 Bono se voltea para darle un beso a Ally pero ella se olea y se levanta😮😔☹
💜💜💜💜
Upload Shania Twain winning her Grammys!! Please!
None of her wins had been televised.
dobazajr I know right. But why.
Deserved award! With all due respect to others, this U2 album reached the pinnacle of sonic perfection. 👏👏👏
the grammy judges are jaded to rule them over the better pop groups & artists
Edge blanked Roy orbison wow
He probably didn't see, and was nervous about the speech. Edge worked on She's a Mystery To Me with Roy and Bono, so he defintely had love and respect for the Big O.
THEY THANKED FLANNERY O'CONNOR.
The Joshua Tree > Bad :)

@@C0DER3DThe Joshua Tree >>>> Bad.
Michael Jackson's Bad should have won the album of the year
Yes
nope sign o the times by prince
Pop tart music? Nope! Joshua Tree DESERVED it.
@@Enne_esse that album was not better than bad
Cry me some more of that Dublin river while you're at it 😀
Michael Jackson is the real winner of that category. Case closed. I think only U2 fans will argue that
i agree should have given the Grammy for Bad
Yeah! The Real winner is Bad Michael Jackson
And Michael Jackson fans are the only ones who think he should have won! He lost to a better album! I never understood ow Wacko Jacko could have such a crazed fanbase.
@@Enne_esse You are definitely a U2 fan then. Bad album was the best, some people see it better than thriller. Im not going to argue the Grammy's knew what they were doing when they gave it to U2.
P.s could you please refrain from using the term Wacko Jacko, it is really offensive to black people. If you don't get what it means research it
@@HossamHassan-pw3bj The Joshua Tree is too good, man.
This definitely should’ve been BAD by Michael Jackson. Hands down!
I truly respect Bad, but The Joshua Tree deserve this award so so much!
@@OFFILMESS when people think of the 1988 Grammys they don’t think of Joshua Tree winning best album. They think of Michael’s performance. Everyone knows Bad was the better album
Nope!!😊
The Joshua Tree is way better, “hands down”. Stay mad.
@@TmprrEoayCcntAou-fk2vs5 #1 singles from one album Mj shoulda definitely won
Michael jackson deserved to win...
😢
Nope!!
Nope! The Joshua Tree is better.
@@TmprrEoayCcntAou-fk2vscap
@@TmprrEoayCcntAou-fk2vs are they revelant today? NOPE! MJ shouldve won idc.
@@mikionigiri U2 is more relevant than MJ today. THE JOSHUA TREE IS BETTER THAN BAD WETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. Cry harder.
They shouldn’t have gotten any Grammys
Cope some more 😀
You’re just jealous you’re not in one of the greatest bands of all time. U2 for life.
@@TmprrEoayCcntAou-fk2vs I’d rather be forced to join BTS then join U2 they stole Michael Jackson’s Grammys
