Classic comedy. Laugh a minute and very quotable. Fun Fact: Regarding the argument between announcers concerning the white and red zones at the airport, the producers hired the same voice artists who had made the real-world announcements at Los Angeles International Airport. At the real airport, the white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only, and there's no stopping in the red zone (except for transit buses). There’s little in Airplane that would actually be considered problematic today. That’s true for most of the genuine comedy classics. The truth is that the kind of humour that causes objections today, quite apart from whatever makes it offensive, is almost always lazy, punching downward cheap shots. The greats didn’t need to do that to be funny and they still don’t. @@inbedwithmovies3228, I can relate -- my mind is frequently drawn to details. When the movie first came out, in 1980, I saw it in a theatre 6 times during the same week -- partly because it was only one dollar to see (cheap, even then), and partly because I loved it, and could catch new subtleties each time. I don't think I completely understood the crash position the first time, myself. There was so much laughter in the theatre, that I'd miss a number of the spoken lines.

When this movie was made in 1980, getting married was still a big goal for many young women. I remember a teacher asking in a college class, "If you knew, that you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?". Over half the girls answered in writing independent of one another, "Get Married".
Interesting, thank you. Look, I get it. The only thing I ever really wanted to do was to be a mum. Now I’m a house wife/ mum. It’s funny because I only know two other women who want the same thing. Big changes in the past few generations, which I mostly put down to social media and the cost of living in a major city.
No one ever gets the eggs being pulled out of the mouth gimmick anymore. There was a very popular close up magic trick done just like that. It's a simple matter of palming the eggs and acting like you are pulling them from the mouth. I guess it must not be done anymore.
I actually saw this movie at a drive inn it was Raiders of the Lost Arch and Airplane. What a double feature. I had such a crush on the actress that was the patient. She was on Love Boat l don't know why it's her curly hair.
This is a spoof of some airplane disaster movies that were made in the 70’s, one was called airport 75 and then airport 77 and then airport 79 the Concorde The longest running gag is that the plane is a jet engine but it’s making the sound of a propeller plane. The joke about baseball cards in the spokes of a bike is a reference to a thing kids did in the 70’s and 80’s, we would attached a baseball card to the frame of a bike with a clothes pin so that the card stuck into the wheel of the bike so that when the wheel turned the card would make a sound that was similar to the sound that a motorcycle would make.
Thanks-I had missed the sound of the plane being off. Thank goodness for the comments section to fill me in! Ahh that makes sense. I have a very vague memory of either us doing that in the early to mid 90s or watching someone do it. It wasn’t baseball cards which threw me off a bit.
Believe it or not, but since you come from Australia, it's worth noting that "Airplane!" was retitled to "Flying High!" for it's Australian release, along with it's release in New Zealand. This is because "The Concorde: Airport '79", a film that did get released in 1979 in the United States had it's Australian and New Zealand releases delayed until 1980 due the crash of an Air New Zealand sightseeing flight in Antarctica. The problem was that "Airplane!" was also scheduled to be released in Australia and New Zealand in 1980. So because Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures already had a feud going on at the time, Paramount decided that "Airplane!" should be retitled to "Flying High!" And even now, 42 years later, the film is still called that in Australia and New Zealand. So much so that even Japan and South Africa have released the film under the alternative title.
Thank you - they will all be on my list. The thing is, Hot Shots is even funnier to me because Hotshots in Australia is the name of a touring male strip show.
There's a handful of classic film parodies you won't get if you haven't seen the movies they're referencing. There's also cultural and current event humor from 1981 like TV commercial parodies you're never going to get because you weren't alive in 1981 to see them. So, it's normal for young viewers to feel out of the loop on a lot of the humor in this movie.
@@inbedwithmovies3228 Even though a lot of the references will go over many heads the key to enjoying this movie (and the Police Squad movies) is not to over-think anything and just enjoy the silliness.
Don't worry if you could not get the correct airplane sound, because in this movie they don't have the right sounds either. The sounds you hear are a propelled plane, but the plane is a jet plane. :D

You're allowed to laugh at anything. We must not be required to refer jokes to a soviet (ideologically purified committee) for consideration before they are allowed.
This movie came out in 1980 (probably before you were born, maybe before your parents were born). "Airplane" is a parody of several movies called "Airport" in a genre where something bad happened on an airplane and the crew had to land under arduous circumstances. Often there were subplots. From movie to movie, there were different issues. "Airplane" and its sequel "Airplane 2" parody the concept by making almost everything go wrong, having many, many passenger issues, and making fun of language. The "Airport" movies came out in the 1970's. Actors here were probably less known to you because the U.S. and Australia tend to get widely different actors. Overlap of our actors tends to be smaller than both of us imagine, and even when it happens and we recognize an actor, we may not see them in other films they do. In the modern age, we see actors from different countries more often, but remember that in 1980 if an actor was someone in a worldwide blockbuster movie a person at the time might be well known in their country, but otherwise unknown. In the U.S. we tend to think all of our actors are well known everywhere, but are probably not unless a movie does particularly well in other countries. Similarly, I would be surprised if most Americans could name five Australian actors/actresses from the top of their memory. It's not an insult, it's just a reality of the size of the planet. You may well have come across Leslie Nielsen - he was prolific in parody movies. However, he died in 2010, so your memory may be limited. I watch many reaction channels. There are at least two of you in Australia, and Americans are often amazed that you haven't heard of some of our most famous movies - however, many of us forget that you are half way around the planet. I think Americans forget that until Crocodile Dundee we had largely forgotten that Australia existed. Until the Lord of the Rings movies came out, there was a globe in a major studio that didn't even have New Zealand on it. In more recent years, we have been exposed to Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, and more. No doubt more of ours have become more visible to you thanks to the Internet. The irony is that the U.S. adores Australia. We just know so little about you. Thanks for the reaction video. Watching others react sometimes points out things that we assume are universal but aren't. That's especially fun when it's about what makes us laugh. I hope you had fun with this movie!

@@inbedwithmovies3228, I just found out this was a scene-for-scene spoof of a *1957* movie called _Zero Hour._ If you're interested, I've got an excellent side-by-side comparison for you. (Suddenly, you'll understand how this movie was created.)
ua-cam.com/video/8-v2BHNBVCs/v-deo.html
Ohh you’re right, I’d forgotten about them. I hadn’t seen it done since the 90s.

This is a spoof of some airplane disaster movies that were made in the 70’s, one was called airport 75 and then airport 77 and then airport 79 the Concorde
The longest running gag is that the plane is a jet engine but it’s making the sound of a propeller plane.
27:34 He's an NPC haha That's great.
😆 glad you appreciated it.

Jess, I just want to tell you good luck. We’re all counting on you.

Thank you for understanding. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get the full experience.
@@inbedwithmovies3228 Even though a lot of the references will go over many heads the key to enjoying this movie (and the Police Squad movies) is not to over-think anything and just enjoy the silliness.
The film Zero Hour was a big influence on Airplane with most of the script being reused for the movie

Welcome!
You're allowed to laugh at anything. We must not be required to refer jokes to a soviet (ideologically purified committee) for consideration before they are allowed.
Normally I do, but you know, don't want to get cancelled.
The litmus test is Blazing Saddles.
Oh no... This is one of those movies you may think you're ready for... but you're not and never will be.
That should be the movies tagline!
