For banana pudding, we usually put Nabisco Nilla waffers in it. They're probably what's giving him the bread texture, because they will tend to get soft and crumble within the pudding. Which is better than it sounds. Nilla waffers are little round vanilla flavored British biscuits. Used to eat them like a dry cereal when I was a kid, but they're best when served in pudding.
Soul Food is distinct from Southern food. Soul Food isn't exclusive to the South either since Black Americans throughout the United States eat Soul Food.
I lived in Germany for two years and traveled all over Europe. I tried tons of great food but as a biased American we’ve got the best food because there is so much diversity. So come one come all and try our food. ❤🤤☺️
IN MY VIEW Southern Food is different than Soul Food. An African American teacher co-worker made my family a complete Soul Food dinner and we responded 'LIKE YOU LEWIS"! It was out of the is world GOOOOOOOOOOD!
I agree, Southern Food is the umbrella term and soul food is a type of southern food. Similar to how Cajun/Creole food is also a type of southern food.

We have warm weather just about all year, low cost of living, big houses, and very friendly people. You can't beat Texas!!
As somebody else who loves broccoli, you have to try broccoli casserole. It's broccoli and rice and cheese. It's best when it's baked with some bread crumbs or something crunchy on top, maybe some more cheese. It's a go-to side for me. Can't wait to see videos of you finally getting to try all these things!

Oh for sure. No food in the world better than a Baptist homecoming. Brunswick stew, 40 different casseroles, biscuits, cornbread, and probably 15 different people made brownies. First of all 24$ total for a delicious meal for 2 people is amazing. Like Lewis said, "It's worth it." That's like a tasty homemade Sunday meal at Grandma's house. Totally worth it👍 2 meals at McDonald's is 30$ easy. Mk?
Corn bread is a batter made with corn meal, flour, baking powder, egg, milk, extra sugar or honey and baked in a pan the oven. Some people put canned corn in it too or jalapenos.
The moment I realized you were an American at heart is when you said “you take some of this and some of this and some of this” that is literally how many Americans eat their food. All together. Mix it together and they elevate the flavors!
I have never. LOL. But I realize I'm weird. My family would, but I didn't even like my food to touch. I would eat one thing, finish it, then move on to the next. Repeat. 😂
Absolutely ... watching my man skewer huge individual items separately and try to eat it like a shish kabob was just painful . He put the entire egg on his fork and tried to gnaw it and everything else at once like a candied apple .
Fried green tomatoes are FIRE!! With some hot sauce 🤤. You wouldn’t want to eat a green tomato by itself it has to be fried with cornmeal. Fried okra is everything and you have to have the hot sauce. Banana pudding is just vanilla or banana, pudding, sliced bananas, and Nilla wafers and it’s delicious!
On the Banana Pudding, there are levels to it. Homemade tops them all. The bottom of the barrel (which is still pretty good) is instant Pudding you can buy in the stores. On Homemade Banana Pudding, there is technique and freshness and elevation in flavor to a level instant Pudding just can't reach.
Thin cut green tomatoes and okra. Not prebreaded. Egg wash and cornmeal. Fried till the okra tips are black. Only in a skillet. I can stop my heart with that and a pone of cornbread with butter.. Made me the fat man i am today.
Ok… I lived in North Carolina for a few years! Wish I never left! Goodness gracious, the BBQ is off the hook! It’s amazing! Honey, believe me, you want the fried green tomato. It's a completely different taste than a ripe tomato. It's tart and crunchy and wonderful. I'm not a fan of tomatoes in general, but I can eat a plate of fried green ones.
Corn bread is made from corn flour. It's best with butter on it, and also butter and honey...YUM! She'll eat, don't worry. Remember, she grew up there so it's all about his reactions to the food.
The best way to describe soul food is like this: You know that feeling you get when you eat the perfect amount of food and the perfect amount of drink and both the food and drink perfectly complimented each other and now you're just sitting there perfectly satisfied because everything hit the spot perfectly and and you just feel so good? Well soul food is like but all of it is pretty much comfort food and you just feel relaxed and content down to your soul and maybe a little sleepy
Make sure you also try corn casserole. I'm Texas born and Tennessee raised but never had corn casserole until my husband's family made it, it's amazing!
Banana pudding must be made with a homemade custard to truly appreciate its simplicity and the delicate light taste of the bananas and light crispy Nilla Wafers. Meringue or whipped topping, either one, amazing!
My fave is the custard with "Dream Whip" mixed in. I don't like the instant pudding versions as much...tastes a tad chemically/weird aftertaste. Simple is always better. The dream whip simply does a wonderful thing to the texture of the custard. Makes it light and almost like a mousse. Delish either way. Hard to make a bad 🍌 pudding.
Haha yes soul food is down home cooking. We country folks make the same thing. It's just good Ole garden fresh veggies that are cooked with tons of love and it will make a memory you won't forget
Collard leaves are huge. You have to cut out the central rib and cut them up. In my part of the south, we don't bread the okra that way. We coat it in cornmeal and fry it.
Biscuits are sometimes indescribable, it’s like a little slice of heaven especially chicken and biscuits so good. I always wish I’d been born in the UK, the history, culture, architecture.
That smoked pork belly "white brisket" is amazing. It is just starting to get popular where I live and it is the perfect change of pace for what we usually eat. Also, look up Rodney Scott whole hog BBQ, I had it a few years back and it's the best BBQ I've ever had.

Greenville and Charleston are definitely two cities worth putting on your “must visit” list. Both are becoming top notch for their food culture. And the cook's friendliness, charm, and welcoming attitude to his customers is the southern charm and kindness that you hear about from the people living in the south in particular and it's real, not fake! They take pride in how much love and time they put into their food, like taking over 8 hours slowly cooking all that well-seasoned meat with that bark, the dark herb crust that you see all around the slices or chunks of beef on the bone. You'll experience all of this when you eat in the South (I live in Columbia, South Carolina) because that's just how people are here in the south so you'll just have to appreciate it, thank them, and best of all, enjoy their food they prepared with love and time and probably ol d old recipes handed down from their grandparents, etc! Be sure to make a point to go out of your way to thank the cook or chef on his food, and the more specific you are the more likely they are to believe you're being authentic.
Fried green tomatoes are amazing. You can’t really imagine the taste. You just have to try it. I’ve never had them for breakfast but I love to make them in the summer for an afternoon snack or a side with supper. My family eats them as fast as I can make them. I dip mine in ketchup ❤
That's what I love about the South and especially Louisiana, they took the term: "feed the soul" and took it literally. It's food that leaves a joyful impression, like your mom's home cooking. It's food for the soul. Literally.

Some of the best regional foods in North America -- and anywhere, really -- are local places! That's for whenever you come to the US.
Yes, cornbread is made from corn "meal"--usually not quite as finely ground as wheat flour. And because there is yellow and white corn, there is yellow and white corn meal and yellow or white cornbread. Most recipes do include also some wheat flour.
$40 for a rib is on the higher side for beef because they are charging by weight. Not all restaurants charge like that. Plus if you don't want beef there is also pork ribs. Don't forget to try texas twinkies when you try bbq
Anyone in the comments telling you that Collard greens are made with butter doesn't know how to cook them!!! Soul Food is what Black people made, and a lot of it has been put under the umbrella of Southern food.
The beef rib? Consider this.... at $28 US per pound. It was smoked low and slow for probably 12 hours. The ribs are cut from, probably, 1/2 of a cow, then the rub is put on. The smokers are manned every hour, to add wood, check for proper temperatures and everything else it takes to make them tender and perfect. I'm fairly certain that Jolly was at that same place.
😂 I lived in Greenville SC. Sometimes ya taste the sauce before ya pour it all over. Fried Green Tomatoes... Awesome. They're at Reedy Park close to the Falls.
The place they paid $24, I'm wondering why they paid a 15% tip?😮 They had a take out order. I've never known anyone to tip on a takeout order. I've only tipped when I've ate inside the restaurant and have been waited on. But for all of that food plus a drink, that wasn't a bad price to pay at all.😊
Tipping on take out isnt unheard of but you dont pay a full tip. Also we dont know if they actually tipped or not, we just know they calculate the tip, probably for europeans who cant figure out how to add 10-20% to a final bill in case they want to dine in.
@@nullakjg767 Yup, I tip the local chinese takeout place because they have the best chinese takeout and they're pretty awesome people - they typically get ~10%.
I tip takeout but mostly because my state still has $7.25 minimum wage (and $1500+ for a 1 br apartment.) Scandalous! I want the workers to stick around so I can have takeout another day.
Collard and other greens often are just freshly picked from gardens, even though you can buy them in grocery stores. I've never been in the South, but I'll bet they grow wild lots of places now, too. When you get here, you need to try beans in different places. They'll knock your UK Heinz beans out of their socks. 😁 BBQ, smoked, sweet baked (baked beans with molasses and brown sugar are Nirvana), cowboy, umpteen different kinds. My go to Southern dish is actually a breakfast one, Biscuits and gravy. 🤤❤️ I highly recommend if you like a savory, creamy, and soft breaded types of dishes.
Notice the red layer in the rib meat. The smoke makes it red. The thicker the red the better. When you come to America in Woodstock Georgia you have to get some chopped pork from Uncle C's BBQ. Best I've ever had. I'll even take you there if you want.

I moved to Taylors just outside of Greenville SC just over two years ago and love it, you are correct about the 100 restaurants in the downtown area, what you forgot to add is that in Greenville county should you have access to a vehicle, there are around 1000 restaurants including the fast food places.
If the steamed/boiled okra is slimy then it's been over cooked. My wife prefers boiled to fried okra so I experimented and figured out how to get it done without slime. I grow okra every year so we eat lots of it during the summer.

Soul food. Southern soul food. It just hits different. It brings comfort and love. That's why we're all fat and happy 😊
Soul Food is distinct from Southern food. Soul Food isn't exclusive to the South either since Black Americans throughout the United States eat Soul Food.
Collard greens are leafy greens that we cook with a ham hock. Delicious!
I lived in Germany for two years and traveled all over Europe. I tried tons of great food but as a biased American we’ve got the best food because there is so much diversity. So come one come all and try our food. ❤🤤☺️
Lol, you ask "what is okra" EVERYTIME you see it!! Ive watched at least 3 other videos that you saw okra and have said the same thing everytime!! 😂
Okra is nasty though
@jamesgirard1090 If it isn't prepared correctly it can be gross and slimy.
Maybe he really wants someone to explain what that is.
IN MY VIEW
Southern Food is different than Soul Food.
OMG I love your reactions!! I am certain that you'll be able to find viewers to host you in any city you want to visit!
Yes, really good soul food does give you an amazing feeling inside. You can tell the food was made with lots of care and love!
If you're a meat guy and you want to visit the USA, you have to trust me, you need to visit Texas. We have amazing BBQ, the best Mexican and TexMex, plus we have amazing Southern food. We have warm weather just about all year, low cost of living, big houses, and very friendly people. You can't beat Texas!!
The rib was cooked for 8 hours at probably 200 to 250 degrees. That's why it is so tender. The outer crust is called the bark.
My family's recipe leaves off the rice. So it's a broccoli cheese casserole with crumbs on top. Delicious.
@@burnslikeice9994 This.
Ours is broccoli and multiple cheeses, garlic, onions and French's crispy fried onions on top (along with a few other ingredients) and baked for a while.
Delicious.
Put Ritz crackers on top...yum
I wish you could try a southern church potluck! That is some of the best food in the world!
Oh for sure. No food in the world better than a Baptist homecoming. Brunswick stew, 40 different casseroles, biscuits, cornbread, and probably 15 different people made brownies. We used to have a sportsman's supper too where the hunters would bring in game. One of the best things I've ever tried is dove breast wrapped in thick cut bacon. Fried alligator and snake. Man I wish we still had that... we southerners love our casseroles.
@@asharadayne1355 lol the Baptist church I went to as a kid had an annual "wild game cookout". there were always a few guys who'd bring their deep fryers, grills and smoking equipment, and with a couple of volunteers they'd cook whatever game people brought in. prep would start the day before to get the marinades and stuff right, then the next evening people would bring their sides and desserts to contribute.
I've watched ~10 videos from L3WG and his love of food cracks me up! His reactions to new foods is awesome. I think he will gain 15 lbs each week he visits the US! Can't wait until he does.
He would get so fat if he came here. 😂
Soul food for me not only comes from the soul, but feeds the soul! It feels so homey and just makes you feel better about life! That said, I'm up in the Colorado rocky mountains and soul food is hard to come by here. I go down to Mississippi and Louisiana often!
I can't wait until you get to make food videos. You have the best most authentic reactions. Get that go fund me together so we can help you get to some good food. :)
Southern FOOD IS THE BEST... I EAT IT EVERYDAY. Sometimes we have pancakes bacon and sausage for dinner just for the hell of it
He doesnt really make food videos unless someone sends him cheeze its.
@nullakjg767 lmao! Thanks! That was funny. I saw the video on American foods he received. Excellent comment. I love this channel. His reactions are so natural & funny!
Love your reactions I’m from North Carolina, and I think North Carolina, South Carolina have the best food, the best barbecue, the best food. If you come over here, please go to northern South Carolina food great history culture. I think you would love it. Be safe. God bless one big love.

First of all 24$ total for a delicious meal for 2 people is amazing. Like Lewis said, "It's worth it." That's like a tasty homemade Sunday meal at Grandma's house. Totally worth it👍 2 meals at McDonald's is 30$ easy. Mk?
*$24
Later they say the rib alone cost $41. And they said it was 1.5 lbs.
@@rwilson7197 that particular cut of beef is expensive.
Maybe where they live restaurant food is a lot cheaper, but I think that for the quality and quantity of food they got, it was remarkably reasonable.
Corn bread is a batter made with corn meal, flour, baking powder, egg, milk, extra sugar or honey and baked in a pan the oven. Some people put canned corn in it too or jalapenos.
Or green onions
Only northerners put sugar in cornbread...😂
Jalapeños & cheese are really good in cornbread but it’s a hard no to sugar & personally I don’t put flour in mine.
My grandma dumps in a can of condensed chicken noodle soups. Keeps it moist.
You and anybody who has never a fried green tomato have no idea it tastes nothing like a tomato it will blow your mind🤯🤯
Repeat. 😂
I only learned from watching JOLLY and other videos like this that dipping stuff in other stuff is a very American thing...
Absolutely ... watching my man skewer huge individual items separately and try to eat it like a shish kabob was just painful .
He put the entire egg on his fork and tried to gnaw it and everything else at once like a candied apple .
Not any Americans I know.
Yeah I don't.. I think it depends on the dish/meal tho.. and personal preferences of course..
💯 Fried green tomatoes and fried okra both with hot sauce are delicious!
Hours and hours on the pit…is the reason it pulls from the bone so easily!!!
Thin cut green tomatoes and okra. Not prebreaded. Egg wash and cornmeal. Fried till the okra tips are black. Only in a skillet. I can stop my heart with that and a pone of cornbread with butter..
Made me the fat man i am today.
@@rondeal3823 My favorite cornbread with that is Hot water cornbread!
Fried green tomatoes are a wonderful treat from heaven..lol.
Ok… I lived in North Carolina for a few years! Wish I never left! Goodness gracious, the BBQ is off the hook! It’s amazing!
The southern cooking, southern hospitality, the smoked goodness, melt in mouth! Completely recommend! Oh my heart and soul! Never forget that place! If I can ever retire in this expensive world… it would be there! Workin on it… life goals! 🤞🤞
Im also gonna add! I’ve been all over this country! I’ve lived everywhere! No joke, ugh… I love the BBQ in North Carolina as much as I love the food of New Mexico! FYI, New Mexico kicks ass in the food department of the US!
Honey, believe me, you want the fried green tomato. It's a completely different taste than a ripe tomato. It's tart and crunchy and wonderful. I'm not a fan of tomatoes in general, but I can eat a plate of fried green ones.
Green tomatoes taste like a mild tomato with a mild green chili taste mixed in, very good battered and fried
Okra is a green vegetable that is usually put in stews and gumbos, but is also good fried
I think it’s just nasty. I can tolerate a bit of it in gumbo.
I love picking fresh okra from my garden and eating it raw. It’s completely different when grown at home and picked when it’s really young.
Corn bread is made from corn flour. It's best with butter on it, and also butter and honey...YUM! She'll eat, don't worry. Remember, she grew up there so it's all about his reactions to the food.
Cornmeal not corn flour
@@Howard0Chris True. My bad. Corn meal is corn flour before it's ground finer.
Butter and honey is great, but butter and homemade molasses is the way to go.
@@Willets02191985 I can only imagine. Light or dark molasses?
Corn bread is made from corn meal. White corn meal in some parts of the south, and yellow corn meal in other parts.
The best way to describe soul food is like this:
You know that feeling you get when you eat the perfect amount of food and the perfect amount of drink and both the food and drink perfectly complimented each other and now you're just sitting there perfectly satisfied because everything hit the spot perfectly and and you just feel so good? Well soul food is like but all of it is pretty much comfort food and you just feel relaxed and content down to your soul and maybe a little sleepy
Make sure you also try corn casserole. I'm Texas born and Tennessee raised but never had corn casserole until my husband's family made it, it's amazing!
Banana pudding must be made with a homemade custard to truly appreciate its simplicity and the delicate light taste of the bananas and light crispy Nilla Wafers. Meringue or whipped topping, either one, amazing!
Oh, how.I love banana pudding! There’s NEVER any leftover banana pudding in my house.
Love love love banana pudding!
Banana pudding is my all time fave dessert! I'm born and raised in the south and tho I love many types of food soul food is the best food on earth
You nailed it when you mentioned the Vanilla Wafers. People tend to overlook them but they are a crucial component in a truly epic banana pudding.
Haha yes soul food is down home cooking. We country folks make the same thing. It's just good Ole garden fresh veggies that are cooked with tons of love and it will make a memory you won't forget
Tons of love and more tons of pork products. A "soul food" veggie that isn't fried just about has to stewed with a ham hock or several.
Collard leaves are huge. You have to cut out the central rib and cut them up. In my part of the south, we don't bread the okra that way. We coat it in cornmeal and fry it.
Yes! Cornmeal fried okra is the way to go!
You are absolutely right about combining the food together in one bite.
This is so good. I'm really glad you're watching this. These two understand she knows her stuff. Also very entertaining bro. I really enjoyed this and had me cracking up 😊👍
they're amazing & thank you!!:)
🌟Happy Holidays🌟 And ✨️Merry Christmas✨️ you're welcome 👍
@@L3WGReactsyou had a previous video about tailgating at college football games. I’m from the area they’re at and at any southern tailgate you will have this kind of food, along with other grilled food that is mind blowing. Clemson University is about a 30 minute drive from where they’re at, and it’s in the foothills of the Appalachian Mtns. South Carolina is a very underrated place to visit. Greenville and Charleston are definitely two cities worth putting on your “must visit” list. Both are becoming top notch for their food culture. For context, Charleston is only a few hours from Greenville but has a completely different style of food in some regards because of its coastal location. If you love food, don’t skip a chance to visit any state in the South.
I've HAD this!!!! Omg, this place is amazing and that sauce is PHENOMENAL!!
Which place specifically?
I am Black. Us Black People take SOUL FOOD TO A VERY HIGH LEVEL! You have to try it to believe how delicious it all truly is. I am glad to finally see a Video SHOWING OUR UNIQUE CULINARY SKILL SETS, NO ONE ELSE COOKS FOOD LIKE US!
Soul food is comforting and it said to touch your soul
They aren't spitting out the food--I think they are just running the video backwards. Relax Lewis.
Haha he s adorably slow sometimes 😅
If you have a spoon full of anything in England as you said “it’s disgusting”.
In America, just between us, we have food that actually tastes good.
Literally.
Im a southerner and I have NEVER eaten that first take out. I do love me some fried green tomatoes though.
You sop up the juices with the cornbread... fyi.
You do feel a certain kind a way when eating soul food. It's an experience that warms your soul. That's why it's called "soul" food.
Broccoli casserole is gooood!
Soul food is made with love and it's all pretty much comfort food. We have a big BBQ rivalry in the Carolinas and even though what he ate looks amazing, I'm still partial to our Lexington BBQ. It's all in the sauce :) Also, fried green tomatoes are amazing!
Lexington BBQ and Cheerwine.....gah
Agree. Letting mustard anywhere near pulled pork is just wrong. You need vinegar to cut the greasiness.
i live in ENC. we have the best pulled pork on the planet.
@@eyeamg0dlyLol, everybody knows West Tennessee has the best pulled pork!!!
@amtank ehm... the cheerwine I agree with but please tell me you're not supporting mustard-based bbq 🤢
Some of the best regional foods in North America -- and anywhere, really -- are local places!
If you're not familiar with a place, find someone who is kind enough to take you on a tour of where it is most safe, and isn't safe. The smaller towns are the most safe anywhere, typically. That's for whenever you come to the US.
Yes, cornbread is made from corn "meal"--usually not quite as finely ground as wheat flour. And because there is yellow and white corn, there is yellow and white corn meal and yellow or white cornbread. Most recipes do include also some wheat flour.
The rib is smoke cooked for 12 to 18 hours. The smoke flavor is throughout the whole thing.
🥹🥹🥹🥹 @2:31 fried green tomatoes 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 my Tennessee heart is happy
Fried green tomatoes are AMAZING ❤❤
The beef rib? Consider this.... at $28 US per pound. It was smoked low and slow for probably 12 hours. The ribs are cut from, probably, 1/2 of a cow, then the rub is put on. The smokers are manned every hour, to add wood, check for proper temperatures and everything else it takes to make them tender and perfect. I'm fairly certain that Jolly was at that same place.
Jolly went to Terry Blacks' in Texas.
@@EmmaChihuahua81 They've been to quite a few places, but thanks.

I knew it.
I live 25 minutes from Greenville SC. Southern food is awesome. Born and raised in SC, USA.
The place they paid $24, I'm wondering why they paid a 15% tip?😮 They had a take out order. I've never known anyone to tip on a takeout order. I've only tipped when I've ate inside the restaurant and have been waited on. But for all of that food plus a drink, that wasn't a bad price to pay at all.😊
Agree
Tipping on take out isnt unheard of but you dont pay a full tip. Also we dont know if they actually tipped or not, we just know they calculate the tip, probably for europeans who cant figure out how to add 10-20% to a final bill in case they want to dine in.
@@nullakjg767 Yup, I tip the local chinese takeout place because they have the best chinese takeout and they're pretty awesome people - they typically get ~10%.
I always tip on take out.
And that idea of renting a vehicle and staying with your subscribers in America? Stellar! Do it. Sounds like the best way ever to see the real country, and you'll have the best food ever.

I asked one of my relatives if they deep fry ocra and they gave me a confused expression thru the phone lol. Fried ocra is so fire. I had plenty of southern comfort foods and they really do give off a warm feeling
Okra is an acquired taste. I like them fried , boiled, and even pickled.
@@MarieL10 ocra isn’t an acquired taste in the Philippines but more of a really common, if not, a popular ingredient used almost daily which is why I’m surprised not a lot has thought about deep frying it. Most Southerners fry okra

All items from Soul food place are Southern food. I'm not sure how they're differentiating those types of food as if they're different. Fried okra, greens, cornbread, pork chops....all awesome. Hot sauce is good on greens. Collard or mustard greens.

I live in Greenville SC. Our downtown area is great. We have a waterfall and over 100 restaurants. Very walkable and safe. Green tomatoes taste kind of tart. Love them. I have a garden every year and grow my own Okra and fry it. Okra can get slimy if you boil it but not when it's fried. Greens are some of my favorites. In the south we don't call it soul food we just call it food! Lol You should visit Greenville when you come.
I moved to Taylors just outside of Greenville SC just over two years ago and love it, you are correct about the 100 restaurants in the downtown area, what you forgot to add is that in Greenville county should you have access to a vehicle, there are around 1000 restaurants including the fast food places.
Just visit. So many people are moving to Gville it's getting crazy packed, & traffic is terrible.
He should have tried the cornbread with those collard greens... mmmmmm
I hate steamed okra because of the slime. But breaded and fried okra is great, you don't feel the slime, and the taste is great.
If the steamed/boiled okra is slimy then it's been over cooked. My wife prefers boiled to fried okra so I experimented and figured out how to get it done without slime. I grow okra every year so we eat lots of it during the summer.
@@anthonyspeight3946 Wow, that's great. Everyone who's cooked okra that wasn't fried didn't do it right, because it was slimy!

I grow okra every year and like mine toasted in a skillet until they are tender (the whole pods) with a little olive oil & a sprinkle of salt.
Just because it's flaky doesn't make it cake, a biscuit is not cake, not even close. You don't usually deep fry green tomatoes, you pan fry them.
