It's less about 0-60 and more about 50 - 80mph...like Top Gear Mag said: This thing is an overtaking monster
.93g for a fwd is impressive.
That's what I'm talking about. I bought the GT premium with leather and all the options. When I was younger I just liked raw speed and power. Now I like luxury and power. Just like many rich men buy high power Mercedes-Benz and BMW's. I love to drive a stick on a Sunday drive or on a track, but now they bother me for everyday use. I do think every man should know how to drive a stick though. I bought a stick shift truck at 15 and drove it home. And I had never drove a stick before.
these are some seriously amazing numbers from a small hatch, and it looks great inside and out
Love the slight oversteer...looks like a blast...
I test drove a Focus ST today, and the words quality and Focus seem so weird to see together, but damn is the new generation of Focus impressive as hell.
thank you for explaining this to people. I am exactly that way, I don't need awd and i really love ford anyway, subaru's are nice as i almost bought a normal impreza but then again i always love me my american cars
I'd believe that. That's actually a big reason why I like "The Fast Lane Car". Their reviews aren't consistent, but at the same time, they're more representative of what you'd get if you lightly brake torqued or generally floored your car at a stoplight on a given day (vs, as you said, perfect conditions). I also wonder whether the gti has a different tune in different markets (famously underrated in the US.)
thats the thing its fun! So much fun! But I found a better way to deactivate the ESC. Hold the button down for a few seconds and it deactivates. Everyones flailing their arms in the air saying it wont shut off but it can. I cant believe I pulled the fuse out to turn ESC off lol. I just discovered that a few days ago haha
Yes, Its physics that rear drive cars can grip and launch better. Still pretty good for a FWD sporty 4 banger though.
I love this Focus.
It really was/is and I Love my 2010 Cobalt SS Coupe. Fun, quick, comfortable, handles great and when asked to it returns phenomenal fuel efficiency. It's too bad that car skated under the radar and never really got time in the Spot light. It's a dominate Sport Compact. I can only hope for an SS Cruze with this incredible 260hp/tq 2.0T powering it.
Have you driven a 2012 GTI? The 11 or 10 cannot compete, VW redesigned the rear chassis and anti roll bars, its handles like a dream, I would know since I own a 2012 GTI! I found a way to turn off stability control, take out the ABS fuse, then you have a real hot hatch! even though the computer FREAKS and says the Engine needs service, the power steering is shot, a headlight is out, tires are all flat and all the doors are open. Its quite the light show, but put the fuse back in and its fine!
depends on the trim level. MSRP ranges from 24,000-29,000 depending on which options you get
Impressive Handling for a FWD, it is better than Honda Integra Type R!
Which can do 67,8 mph on Slalom, and 0.92g at Skidpad. Really Impressive!
In don't know if they will release the RS in the USA but I think that the Focus ST is doing great for a ST. The Focus RS is one step above the ST, that will definitively get the most stickiest tires and a mechanical differential (most important detail).
It's heavier bc its a more substantially built vehicle. It has much more sound deadening materials, it has more technology, the turbo engine is heavier as well, and its just a more solidly built and refined vehicle over the Si. Drive the two back to back and you will see that the ST is way more comfortable, refined, and solid feeling. The handling isn't affected by the weight and the extra 51 hp and 100 ft lbs of torque negate the extra weight over the Si.
You guys ever test the turbo cobalt from 08-10? That should be the benchmark.
Wait till the tuners get their hands on them... I'm SURE they've dialed down the torque from idle. I bet it's a mid 5's car without trying. The fact of the matter is, it handles INCREDIBLY for the money.
I'd own this car hands down over a Speed3 any day day of the week. Looks fantastic.
I was expecting much more from acceleration, but the handling seems pretty good!
I agree Sticks are more fun to drive, but some people prefer autos. I bought a Mustang GT with an auto because I have to drive in stop and go traffic all the time. And after driving sticks for 25 years, auto are nicer for everyday use.
Could be. Fifth gear in the UK once tries to replicate claimed 0-62 (100kph) times in a GTI they couldn't do it even using launch control. After some digging turns out the claimed times were 1) On a slight down hill 2) With a tail wind 3) Just enough fuel to do the run and a light driver. So the take away is numbers is only useful to compare when tests are exactly the same.
Great Handling for a FWD. It looks very Tail Happy!
I Love it!
sensational handling, Ford can make a good car!
I was looking forward for ST and even thought of buying one when it came out but I am so glad I didn't. The by pe around ST was fast and agile but average 1/4 of mid 14's and 6sec 0-60 seem about the same as any other eco box. I will wait for turbo BRZ or just get a WRX. Still, I guess its ok for what it is lol.
Does Edmunds use a different launching method than the other major car reviewing folks? C&D and MT both got ~barely sub-6 times.
Finally, the Golf R has some proper competition. Now they can stop comparing it to cars like the STi & Evo.
I would love to get the two door version of this car, but they are not in the US market :((
Ever seen the dust on that track? Watch the vids again.
Looks hot too.
the turbo cobalt was such a performance bargain. sadly gm doesnt make any fast compacts anymore
Agreed. If they could bring it down by 800-1K lbs, it would be at a reasonable fighting weight
Naw, this car handles much better than a GTI and in terms of straight line speed it is quicker, keep in mind that Edmunds often have slower 0-60 times than everyone else. They quote a GTI at around 6.9-7.2 to 60.
I love this front
I think the mazda3 one is pretty weird
I've owned other mazdas including an FD, miata and currently have a 2010 RX8
Other reviews have ran the Focus ST zero to sixty in about six seconds even. Are you guys use to manual?
I wish more car magazines/review shows would do 60-90 times, or acceleration in the range you overtake on the highway times (real world practicality). 0-60 and 1/4 are great and all but how often am i dropping the clutch and launching at every light? unless you have a massive rear end lift, fwd cars will never exceed at the 1/4 mile, but im sure this thing hauls in gear. My old saab 9000 would do 50-100 faster then the ferraris and porsches of the era
Focus ST has the best combination between everyday driving performance and everyday driving comfort and long term reliability, ST s 2.0 ecoboost is made almost like lifetime reliable so no worries like in subarus and lancer evos etc, its perfect competition is mazda 6 and VW golf GTI, try comparing FWD with FWD, and FWD cars has difficulty in ptun power to the ground compared to RWD and AWD without eliminating torque steer so i think Focus ST is the most balanced FWD car ever built
Looks like it handles great, kinda wish it had ~300bhp from the factory, then it would make it amazing.
Is this the same track tat motortrend uses?
The Subaru is quicker for sure, however, you are forgetting that everyone is different. Not everyone wants or needs AWD. It affects the MPG and makes the vehicle heavier. The Subaru is much louder and more raw, it isn't a great daily driver as the ride is harsher and the noise levels are much higher. The Subaru can't match the Fords tech and interior quality levels. It feels like an Impreza with a turbo strapped to it while the ST has a more premium, upscale feel.
Sweet car!! Would love to drive one.
The ST has at least 10 less horsepower, so the gap makes sense. Plus, it wasn't that Ford couldn't make a more powerful engine: they just figured that some people might be willing to trade that half second for a solid 30% increase in fuel economy.
69.1 mph through the slalom and .93 g on the skid pad? That's insane!
mpg is 23/32 on the ST and it is only about 300lbs lighter
an 05 LS does 0-60 around 9 seconds at BEST
If the handeling is great how great? Is it along the same lines as a GT 86 BRZ FRS???
There is more to a car than speed, but man this thing underperforms for what its got. Like someone said the Civic Si is faster with 20% less power (and admittedly about 10% less weight)... thats important to this segment
i want one. although... mazdaspeed 3. would suffice with its wagon body .while i have a wrx now. a sti would be cooler than catnip. fwd is great. i had a fwd nissan for years. now i hae a wrx. economy, handling, everything.
@pcfxer Yep theres a few videos showing the same time also you search on UA-cam "Stock 2013 Ford Focus ST Drag Run" you'll see they ran 14.4 also.
250 hp is solid, but what is the torque? It don't seem to have much torque. Still yet, it seems to be faster and more practical than the FRS and GT86 everyone is nuthugging.
the gti's power curve is heavy on low end torque giving it get up in go from the launch.. it makes up for its underpowered engine
Yea what are they smoking? Some people on UA-cam have timed it at 6.1-6.3 which makes sense...and you cant get much better than the GTI's handling, I just hate how mine has tire hop when going full throttle from 1 and 2 say from a stop light or just accelerating for the hell of it. I still prefer the GTI, just a better car overall and more heritage behind the badge even though that means nothing.
Mazdaspeed 3 dominating this segment for about 3 years? The Speed 3 has been in the US since model year 2007, so that's actually about 5 years. The Focus ST's acceleration seems unusually slow for it's power level. Even the trap speed seems a bit on the low side, being in the neighborhood of a Civic SI and similar cars.
Yes. and i also owned a 57plate ST. which i hated it felt ery sloppy on the limit as does the new one. its fun and puts a smile on your face but its defo not for fast lap times. it,s just a quick family car. my car for fun is the clio 200 cup. and know car under 30k can touch it. it,s just so involving and raw. yes theres faster in the straights but there ain,t nothing that can touch it for corner entry and exit speeds which is where i catch the higher priced cars back up. octavia VRS daily car.
Compare sales. Most people are not interested in max performance at the cost of refinement and comfort.
This is an amazing little car! It is very quick and with the right kind of launch it is even better. I hear bogging in the videos and know by the way it snapped my neck that it is in the 5sec range when driven hard. But the handling is what blew me away the most! It is actually just as good if not a little better than the Mazdaspeed3! But change the tires on the Mazda and it will be better than the Ford. So when it comes to stock vs stock I see the Ford being better. Mazda is better with tweaks.
This is a half second faster then my 05 Impala LS with automatic and the Impala is a much bigger car. Now, I will say this. I am sure it handles nice. But I'm also sure it will suck at the pumps. Probably the same as my Impala Sport. 19/29
I'm not a fan of fwd cars but these numbers don't seem right. MSP3 are pretty for what they and this should match the numbers of it.
Other tests have shown the ST achieve 14.5, all it takes is a bad launch or some lazy gear changes and a few tenths are lost.
What's faster to 60, that freight train or the Focus ST?
1:02 through 1:16 is just... holy ****!!!
rwd. I live in new york, winters get pretty rough. That's just why I wouldnt personally get the mustang over the focus. I'd still rather get a GTI though. The seats in the focus are just wayyyyy too flashy for me.
So does it have torque steer or what?
Why are other magazines testing the car's 0-60 at under 6 secs... edmunds always seems to have slower numbers than everyone else...
when for the RS model???
Not to mention the WRX STi get's like 23 mpg and the Lancer Evo get's 22. No 4 banger should get fuel economy that terribad. .
That's worse than the new Mustang GT500 which has a 650hp V8 and get's 24mpg. The last Viper got 22 from a V10. I agree with you the Subaru's are nice but they have their compromises.
@saboobuu the site also mentions the ST's torque-steer compensation system....only a FWD car would need that.
So... Scion FRS or Focus ST?
Looks like I need to do some work to my GTI to catch up -_-
very good. keep up with many cars. outhandle audi tt rs
LOL, Mazda 3 dominated in the US, that's lack of competition. Here in Europe we got quite a few cars that beat that car without a sweat (Renault Megane RS Cup, Opel Astra OPC 2012, Ford Focus RS500 and so on).
They all have a non-McPherson suspension (Revoknuckle, HiPer Strut) and a limited slip differential.
I agree Edmunds tends to be slower than most other sources. But that being said this 252hp 2.0T focus gets its ass handed to it by Chevys 08-10 Cobalt SS with its underrated 260 2.0T. That's via Edmunds watch?v=aQ7MD2jnQ8A. Good job Ford for coming out 5yrs later and still coming up short
To the InsideLine staff: The Focus ST's slalom of 69.1 mph faster than the Mazdaspeed 3? You tested a 2010 'Speed 3 with a slalom speed of 72.4 mph or +3.3 mph, significantly faster than the ST. Just Google "Mazdaspeed3 72.4 mph".
Kind of disappointing straight line performance figures, but this thing handles like an absolute beast. There's probably a ton of untapped power in that turbo 2.0L DI motor, waiting to be unleashed with just a tune.
No, but I think you are. The STi doesn't do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds or the 1/4 in 13.1. And I don't know how bad their drivers are because other reviewers were able to get 0-60 in about 5.8 seconds.
Aren't u guys got 71.1mph with the mazdaspeed? How come he said ST has better handling?
Question is why would anyone get focus over mustang ? I guess the only advantage is 5 doors and utility, that's it... Mustang on the other hand is a whole grand cheaper , looks much better and delivers way better performance, at the expense of being 2 door and relatively impractical.
Good lord I hate quite sports cars and hot hatches! I'm fine with good cruising and such, but the go-pedal needs to tickle my hearing-bits. Abarth, STi, Cooper S-- good job! Most others, not so much.
A high slalom speed is fairly meaningless? You're kidding me right? Tell that to Ferrari, Porsche, etc. Slalom is a very good indicator of suspension and chassis tuning. It tells how agile a vehicle is and how well it handles weight transitions. Just a few mph in speed will put cars into different classes or leagues. Definitely more meaningful than G-forces generated while driving in a circle, which just highlights mechanical grip.
Bc once you import an RS to the states it will cost significantly more than 30 grand...
0-60 is a little slow with that kind of hp dont you think
amazing
That is pretty good. Yet it don't seem like it has that much torque.
How much is that thing??
And why should people get this over a WRX? I like both cars, just saying.
is it just me or the front apron of the car looks a bit like an aston martin?
NYC should have this for taxis
Would love to c next speed3, build it quick Mazda!!!
A half second is no small margin. I am underwhelmed, especially since this isn't exactly cheap.
0:44 look at the container it got GT logo :)
Now THAT sounds right. No way it's a 15 second car....no effing way.
I think it's caused by terminal InisdeLine sucking at driving.
very nice !!!
So YOU'VE driven the new Focus ST and compared them? We don't get Renault over here...
Yeah I read your comment again...annnnd realized that's what you meant. hope you don't get too much flack from the others ;)
By character you mean a rougher ride, a balky stick, and road noise? The MS3 is not exactly a beauty queen, either.
@detmer87 A lot of euro cars wont pass US crash standards, like the Megane Cup. But the Focus RS500 makes no sense over here. That car would cost as much as much as a 5.0. Over here we have 430hp Mustangs for as much as a Focus RS
or autocrossing. you forgot t he people who actually drive their cars in performance setting for fun. other than drag racing. which i can do in a chevelle. handling matters too .
Isn't it a new chassis a la Alfa Romeo Giullieta? Yep...therefore not a neon.
It was 6.3sec to 60 and a decent driver should be able to mimic that. This car isn't for the "everyday" person. With 250hp and a six speed, this car is meant to be driven by enthusiasts, not soccer moms.
6.6 0-60? What did these guys do...fill the gas tank with cement? Road & Track just did a comparison of the ST, GTI, and Mazdaspeed 3 and the ST won out. Also, R&T got a 0-60 in 5.9, so these guys clearly are doing something wrong. Additionally, the ST costs less than the competitors as well. Check Road & Track for the comparison.
